Same guy who directed Green Lantern though... Can't win em all!

WB execs messed with GL. The movie martin wanted to make never happened. He refuses to talk about GL in interviews for exactly that reason. The same pattern wb execs have shown with BvS and suicide squad.

Bond eating in an empty dining room after the poker game might be my favorite scene in the whole franchise. Everything about it feels so incredibly natural (and in a way totally unnecessary for the film)... i still don't understand why that scene is there, but i love it with a passion.

I grew up on James Bond films and they've greatly informed my love of film in general, despite many of them being terrible. To me it's a blessing that one of the greatest, if not the best, Bond film was released when i was old enough to appreciate it. Craig easily rivals Connery for the best performance of the character.

It's such a shame they haven't been able to reach the same heights, although i find Skyfall to be a fantastic addition to the franchise.

Edit and Ps.: Eva Green as Vesper is bar none the best Bond girl ever.

Craig's best Bond film by far in my opinion. Nothing else comes close. Martin Campbell does Bond better than anyone. He should come back for the next one.

One of my favorite Bond movies and I think it may be my favorite Bond theme song, too.

Mine, too. It fits the character and the "reboot" notion of this film perfectly.

Adele's Skyfall and Garbage's The World is Not Enough are also solid. And Tina Turner's GoldenEye is damn groovy.

Gotta say, and I know this won't be a popular opinion on GAF, that I'm looking forward to the end of the Craig era in Bond.

Skyfall was the only one I even remotely enjoyed (CR was "ok"), and I thought QoS may be one of the very worst Bonds I've seen, next to Diamonds are Forever and A View to a Kill.
Given the reviews, I haven't seen Specter yet, and in no rush to do so.

The only Craig film of the bunch I enjoyed. Even Skyfall did nothing for me despite the amount of love it gets.

Best Bond
Best song
Best girl
Best plot
Best car

Only the poker scenes bothered me. (spoilers)

Le Chiffre should not have such an obvious tell.

And it was a bad decision to give Bond straight flush. It felt fake.
If I did that scene, I would have them have nothing at all and have Bond win with high card.

Yeah the poker was pretty weak. I try to shut my brain off during those scenes.

Bring back Vesper. I don't care how you do it, just bring her back.

Their relationship elevated CR above the rest of the franchise.

Twin sister Esther Lynd.

Seriously though, you need to watch On Her Majesty's Secret Service if you haven't already

The beginning of the novel (which still fits with the movie's opening) is that Bond visits Vesper's grave, goes to Casino Royale, where he meets a mysterious woman. She tries to commit suicide by drowning herself in the ocean, but this time Bond saves her.

It's really a twin to Casino Royale, and I love how they changed a couple things in the movie from the novel to make it tie in a little deeper.

They're celebrating after winning. It's a pretty famous scene in the novel where "La Vie En Rose" is being played (which is a reoccurring thing in the novels when Bond remembers Vesper). You can actually see that they have an area for a band there, but I think Craig mentioned that it should be so late after the poker game that it'd so late that it'd be all cleared out, so they changed it when they shot it. Pretty important beat in the Bond/Lynd story.

Still my favorite Bond film post-Connery. It feels modern, but retains a class and glamour of the old films. Vesper is finally a Bond girl that is more or less his equal. Eva plays her to perfection.

It's a shame that his following films didn't hold a candle to it.

I haven't seen it in ages but wasn't his tell basically nothing in the end, Bond didn't read him at all except by mistake at the beginning. I guess Bond knew how desperate Le Chiffre was after being attacked and he himself getting poisoned that he could push him all the way. Did I forget anything?

The winning hand isn't so bad, can't remember what kind of straight flush it was, four of a kind or something else basically doesn't sound so good on screen and getting the Le Chiffre has he won tension is probably the reason.

What happened was, Le Chiffre had an obvious tell, Bond picked up on it, told Vesper, who relayed it to Le Chiffre who then faked his tell.

Actually made me a Bond fan. I hated Brosnan, who was Bond while I grew up.

This made me see all previous movies, and appreciating them warts and all.

Skyfall is my fav though. CRs pacing is off at times and no one beats the Deakins.

Bond noticed that Le Chiffre was mumbling (? not sure about the english word).
Even though Bond didn't have good cards he kept raising so that Le Chiffre reveals his cards. He too had nothing so Bond made the connection.
Then he told Mathis who told Le Chiffre and later he faked his tell while having good cards and won. It's a very amateurish tell...

Bond won with a low straight flush iirc. 56789 or something.
Winning with high card is the ultimate psychological win imo.

Made me a MASSIVE James Bond fan... then QoS, Skyfall and Spectre were all shit and lost me again.

CR is such a great film it's crazy that they dropped the ball so hard. I mean, I know there were like 20 shit Bond films before it, but I really thought CR was the start of something special.

For real? Do you have more information about this?

Hands down my fave Bond movie

Everything just fit together perfectly. A damm shame the following movies were so mediocre. With a few flecks of ingenuity.

I'm hoping when they soft reboot it again they have some actual faith in themselves, stop the fanservice and just make a damn good Bond movie with Bond actually enjoying himself.

That would have made even less sense than the already ridiculously stupid last hand in the movie though. There wouldn't be a showdown if everyone had a high card, the first guy to push all-in would win the pot lol

Looking back...most of the Bond movies are bad to average and a few that are "decent" at best. There really are really only two good movies, "The Living Daylights" and "Casino Royale", and yes Casino is definitely the best, well made, well told, great acted.

The movies don't hold up, they are awfully dated and cheesy. No matter how cool Connery was. It's time either for a massive overhaul or just retirement.

It's weird retroactively seeing Eva Green play a more subdued role next to stuff like Angelique, Vanessa Ives, and Artemisia.

Amazing film and sadly the following sequels are not nearly as good. Quantum of Solace had an amazing setup and screwed it up. Casino Royale looks amazing but has some serious story problems and Spectre was a mess, though I did enjoy all three of them. Can't we get Martin Campbell back for another film? Also, dat Eva Green! I'm never really attracted to people from a film, but sweet lord Eva!

"Now the whole world's gonna know that you died scratching my balls."

What a movie. Definitely one of my favorite Bond films.

For a modern bond it's also surprisingly close to the source material. A good take on it in the modern era.

That it was 10 years ago is crazy.

This was the first (and only) James Bond movie I have ever seen. I got it for super cheap on UMD. I really really enjoyed it, but not enough to go out of my way to see another movie in the franchise.

A shit movie and the 2nd worst Bond actor after Lazenby

I remember going to see this at the cinema, and remembering why James Bond was such an enjoyable franchise all over again. Granted I grew up watching VHS recordings of Live And Let Die and Moonraker, but still, this was the James Bond I wanted more of. Made the fact Quantum was such a mess even more disappointing I suppose. At least Skyfall made up for it though!

Now that you mention this movie... I came to the conclusion that Eva Green is not #1 but tied #1 Bond girl together with Diana Rigg...

Damn, I had no idea. I coincidentally watched the blu ray on the exact 10th anniversary because I bought a new LG OLED and wanted to test it out. The movie has been sitting in its packaging for years until that moment!

Bizzare.

Loved the movie. Enjoyed it much more this time than I did when I watched it in theaters 10 years ago.

Eva Green is the best thing about the movie, and the movie is great.

Connery in Goldfinger > Daniel Craig in Casino Royale

I decided to re-watch the movie because of this thread, don't think I've seen it since around the time of its release. I'd forgotten how good it is, has to be the best film I've watched in ages and I kinda want to watch it all over again. Hell, I even like the intro despite not caring at all for Chris Cornell.

I love how the movie doesn't center around creating the biggest/dumbest action set pieces, but instead just uses the action as seasoning (though the airport truck scene is probably the only part of the movie I'm not crazy about). To me it's great that the main antagonist is already dealt with 2/3rds into the movie. It's so subdued for a Bond movie, because it's actually about him as a character instead of some harebrained super villain scheme. Even the Bond girl in this film is someone you care about, and Eva Green is just amazing.

I get that subsequent movies couldn't be this character focused, but they could at least have taken away the lesson that they don't need to be about (increasingly boring) over the top action. Maybe this is the best Bond movie because Bond is the least himself in it, there's actually some humanity in it that makes the film resonate more.
