To be fair, the fighting game should have the MOST impressive graphics...Background & 2 fighters...right? Unless I'm missing something.
However, graphics shouldn't matter in a fighting game. Gameplay is 1st
And yet they haven't been since driving and FPS games really took off. Unless the missing piece is simply "budget" (probably not.), there is more to the picture.

All of these are so brutal. Are the fatalities from other games just as bad(good)?
I honestly do think it's the budget. Fighters are not the mainstream genre anymore, so it's only natural that they don't get the biggest budgets. And it's evident too because basically no one is making new fighters, only sequels that are guaranteed to be at least somewhat profitable.
What are other examples of this in the MK series? Only thing I can think of is "Finish him" line at the end of every fight, but that appropriately changes to "Finish her" against a female fighter.

People bring up the 60fps but I wouldn't be surprised if the game is running much higher than that behind the scenes. Because a fighting game can't ever drop a single frame ever.

Welp, at least this made me aware of how fuck awful the female character design in this game is.
Fighting games are now built for the systems we've got, not designed around super powerful arcade hardware and then scaled back for consoles. They're not ported from weaker hardware to much more powerful hardware.
The reason they used to be showcases were because of those things.
Personally still think they look amazing, and it's even more impressive when you consider the number of games out there that are a consistent 60fps. I'll take that over all of the graphical features in anything else.

Kenshi's are probably my favorite. Liu Kang's not bad either.

it really doesnt. The in game cinematics look awful, but the game itself and the animations look really good. The lighting is great as well. I wouldnt say it looked "crap" at all. Ive put in around 10 hours or so into the game and the only negatives for graphics are the cut scenes in story mode.

After the first time the impact is gone. Brutalities feel more satisfying to me.

I can see how you'd get used to it. But actually, I attribute my distaste for it with my brush with death during the past year. Massive blood loss left me mentally scarred.
