Castlevania in 3D: How about making a turn-based RPG?

How about instead of giving up on the series as an action game just because some hack of a producer and his team sucked ass, they **gasp** find a capable team with the vision to actually take the series to the next level?

CoD is a shitty, coaster-level action game that lets you level up what are essentially pets, the whole "rpg" label is just an attempt to defend the shitty gameplay. I had hoped for a better game after LOI (which wasn't too bad), but somehow Iga managed to make a worse game.

LoI wasn't bad, I agree. It felt flat with it's repetitive hallways and levels but overall it integrated that Castlevania feel very well. CoD definitely took a step backwards. Instead, they should take the series back to pure platforming and skill-based gameplay. Ditch the RPG elements. Ditch the story. Ditch the anime.

personally I think CoD > Loi. The weapon creation system is nice.
How about Castlevania stops being about 'systems' and starts being about gameplay and level design? 99% of the creativity has been going into 'new systems', while the levels get worse and worse. People who defend the recent games do so based on the 'soul/item fusion/pokemon pet/character swapping/rpg leveling/female impersonator systems' claiming they add 'depth'. Well I don't want this 'depth' (which I read as 'clutter'), I want quality gameplay and level design.

You're generalizing big time here. I prefer Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow over Symphony of the Night because of better level design in particular. It's kind of more like people unilaterally bashing Iga's efforts for being "inferior SotN clones".

Who cares about Castlevania? I want a Metroid RPG, with Armstrong Houston and a sarcastic rogue Space Pirate as secondary characters!

For the love of God, NO!
Fully 2.5D Castlevania action game for Wii!

How about making a 3D game with atmosphere like the N64 games along with more frantic gameplay? I would be fine with that.

And Castlevania as a JRPG would be terrible. There was already too much anime bullshit in LoI (and I assume CoD, never played it).

how about a surival horror version? The N64 version comes pretty close to it especially in the mansion/hedgemaze portions.

the graphics looks like ass and it controls like a truck, but they actually got a lot right!

CV64 had terrible combat but the platforming parts were pretty nice. Lament of Innocence had solid combat but the platforming (and level design in general) was terrible. Why not combine the positive aspects of those two games into one super awesome 3D 'Vania? z0mg I'm a genius!

CV64 has way better combat than the PS2 games do platforming, though... particularly Legacy of Darkness, since Cornell is so much more powerful than Carrie or Richter.

Legacy of Darkness also does a lot to improve graphically over Castlevania for N64... it really looks a lot better thanks to expansion pack support for higher resolution graphics. Legacy of Darkness was a pretty good game... in addition to the good platforming, it also has lots of adventuring and exploration.

Hmm, the somewhat slow pace was part of what made the N64 Castlevania games unique. It really enhanced the adventure feel of the games... with a faster pace they never could have put in so many puzzles, much less all the platforming. The combat is decent enough too (I didn't think the combat was terrible, but maybe that was just because of how ridiculously easy it all is with Cornell... ), but I really think that in both games it is quite a bit less important than the platforming and adventure elements of the games are, and I think that the formula worked pretty well. Legacy of Darkness definitely was a good game. It's too bad that there probably will never be another Castlevania game like the N64 Castlevania games again, with how Igarashi thinks that the PS2 games are how to do 3d Castlevania...

No.

No. No. No. No. No.

That is the worst fucking idea I've ever heard. Castlevania is all about the twitch-based action gameplay. Take that away, and you have a game that simply is not Castlevania.

God of War feels the most like my ideal 3D CV to me. It has linear levels with some comfortable backtracking to add some adventure flavor, and varied weapons that level up in an easy and streamlined way that just serves to augment the fun. I'd like a little less fighting and more tight platforming, but the template is there to be tweaked. Replacing the wonderfully realized Greek mythology with the neo-Gothic style of CV... all those awesome setpieces and grand locales... oh my God. Fuck IGA and his bad 3D games and his regurgitated 2D retro bunk.

I really liked CV64 back in the day. Good idea, flawed execution.

I think it'd be a great idea. Kind of like Castlevania 2 except with more RPG elements. I'd definitely get it day one.

As much as this have been said already, if it worked with DMC and GoW, itll work with Castlevania. A different team is necessary, thats all. With Igarashi's persistence (which Im actually thankful for) on making a 3D cv right, i actually have hope within the next 2-3 games, he'll make the right one :P

I didn't have a personal issue with the combat, but then again I think CV64 and LoD are good, solid games. Not perfect, but solid and I love them. It's too bad that the gaming world has collectively turned it's back on them. They got great scores when they were released, and suddenly they're total crap and everyone thought so from the beginning, supposedly.

At any rate, a majority of fans want insane DMC action so I guess that's what we'll get from now on, if we get any more 3D games. But I would sacrifice that stuff for atmosphere any day.

That sounds great. Instead, we'll get some new Belmont doing 3,000 hit combos in bland, featureless levels.

Only Harmony of Dissonance really had that "regurgitated" feel.

It was probably the most a single CV game has ripped off of SotN in terms of basic design, and yes it did feel stale. Still a pretty good game overall, I think.

Wait, how is Castlevania 'twitch-based'? The majority of the playable characters (with the exception of Richter from PoR) control like a bathtub.
