Castlevania Portrait Of Ruin (DS) thread

Just finished with bad ending, now going for the best one.

Question about the VK,
does it have any side effects? I'm trying to beat Richter and I think I'm getting there but I don't know if it's a good idea to do so anyway.

Also, can you get some REALLY good items on the co-op mode? Or just silly ones?

On the VK:
it doesn't seem to affect anything, I used it a lot in the Den of Evil and on the last four areas without noticing any changes

Finished my first playthrough, now working on maxing out items and stuff on Jonathan's file.

The other thing I'm going to try is
a low-kill or no-kill game with the sisters, as they can fly over stuff and go around a lot of areas early
but I don't know if it's possible. We shall see.

I don't think this is a game I'd try to speedrun, but if some sequence breaks come up or something, I might.

There are glitches in the game you can use to sequence break. Also, when you play with
Richter
you can easily speedrun it---as always:fast mofo--. I plan on rushing through it, whenever i get this Lvl1 cap one finished. It doesn't take much time to get from point a to point B.

Can someone hook up with me (WiFi) at some point and sell me some Moldy Bread? I sold it or something and it's only in the game once. Stupid quest...

I just finished the Nation of Fools, and I can see what some of you mean about the level design. It was neat at first, but after awhile it felt like there was a ridiculous amount of copy/pasting going on.

Now, granted - you could say the same thing about the Condemned Tower. But at least that area was short and had great music.

So far I've seen some sort of quadruple jump glitch or something with Jonathan, but other than that, I haven't seen much. I guess I'll have to read up on it more before I try it.

Yeah, I have to pick the game up again. But Nation of fools really was repetitive. Very much. I mean, you cover so much more ground in this one, they should make it well varied. Nation of Fools would have been great if they simply cut the size in half. Everybody who's played it knows what I mean :D

Any tips on how I can raise my INT to 100?

Also, how much do I have to level up my Javelin attack to complete the Spear of Legend quest?

For Int and Mnd, work with Charlotte not Jonathan. Go through all of your armors, helms, boots, and accessories and equip stuff that boosts those stats. Then cast a double-charged Int Boost spell.

For the Javelin. Mastery.

Wear equipment that increases your INT, duh.

Then use an INT buff.

If this does not work, grind.

I'm so sick of using this royal sword. I've used it for like 50% of the total game progression. Is there a better weapon to find out there??

I can buy some ridiculously expensive axe(no cash for it though), but all the whips and pickups I find are total suck in power compared to this dumb royal sword.
I have yet to beat Richter, so maybe the vamp killer is an improvement, but I still need a stronger weapon to help take him down.

You can still use other weapons even if they're not as good, for the sake of variation. And yes, there are better weapons.

You can take Richter down with a pussyass weapon like a Leather Whip because his pattern is so predictable. Just jump towards and he'll toss an axe, then push back in midair to land outside of its range, and attack on the way down. As long as you remember to jump over him once he gets pretty close to either edge of the room, you're good. If you get hit by his whip, it does a lot of damage, but there's a pause before he swings it, so it's easy to adjust your timing. It's totally possible to do this fight without ever being hit.

I'm sure it's been asked, but how do I get into the
Nest of Evil

I've found everything in the game so far and I'm at 895% or so and I go to the area where I'm supposed to find it but I can't find a breakable wall or anything to get me into the area. I only other thing I haven't done is beaten the final boss, if that has anything to do with it...

Can someone please help me.

I'm at the part where I have to fight Eric's two daughters but when I beat them the game just abruptly ends... what am I doing wrong?

Look through the last few pages. You'll find it.
You have to heal them, which isn't actually as easy as it sounds.

Sorry for not using the spoiler tag.

But could you just tell me how? I went through like five pages and it was mostly a bunch of people whining about the soundtrack and level design.

I did :)

Heal the sisters with Charlotte.
It might take a few tries.

Has anyone else found this? In Vincent's shoproom, if you have just Jonathan out and hold up, after he does his extra goofy pose, Vincent says something about Charlotte and she's like "I'm still here!" I don't think I've seen anything else on this. The top screen also fades out with the inverted crossxbat thing.

How exactly do you heal? Sorry I'm not that great at this game.

One of your secondary weapons for Charlotte you should have at this point is Cure Curse, I believe. Use that on the sisters to clear them of their curse.

equip Sanctuary on Charlotte and start the fight as Jonathan. Hit R to make Charlotte start her spell, and your job is to keep the sisters from touching charlotte, as that will break the spell. You also can't scroll charlotte off the screen, or else she's cancel the spell and try to attack. But make sure to use R to start her spell, I was starting out as charlotte, triggering the spell, then switching to Jonathan, and it didn't work for me. The R method worked on the first try. :D

Sanctuary! I couldn't remember what it was called!

Ah, I did it the hard way...manually.

Anyways, does anyone have "thick glasses" or "moldy bread" for sale?

I'll buy a 20-30k item along with them >_>

After you get the Cog from Nation Of Fools, and access the area with the motor bikes... What do you do?

The bikes just run into a wall, how do I get past that area? El helpo.

put one character in one bike and the other in the other bike.

keep switching characters so you avoid the obstacles after that you'll hit the wall with both bikes destroying it in the process.

Cool, that worked. Now I have to go talk to the wind an? Who's that and where?

I've been skipping most of the dialog :/
How do I know you won't just skip this post too if I help you? Seriously, read the dialog in the game if you don't wanna come off like an idiot.. or you will have to ask alot more in this thread. And no one likes people who asks questions because they're too stupid to read.

Wind is the ghost in front of Vincents shop.

Finally went and finished the last boss fight, which was cool. I still need to finish the last 2 sections in the nest of evil and master a few more sub-weapons for 1000% completion.

I did start
a Richter playthrough
and it's freaking awesome. I have yet to
play as the sisters though
.

After completing the game, I'm ready to go back through again. This game is probably my handheld GotY.

So, is being confused part of the Castlevania experience?

For example, when I fought Death, I just bought a whole bunch of Tonics and and kept using Dual Strikes and replenishing my Mana, over and over. I hit him with melee attacks maybe a total of two times. I don't even know why I did it. I guess I was just being lazy.

But afterwards I felt pretty bad, like I cheated or something. I need some direction! I don't know what level I should be at or how I should be playing ): !!!

I forgot how awesome this series was. I finished up Yoshi's Island and kinda didn't want to get going. Played a good hour tonight. So much fun.

sure is. and it keeps getting better and better. so awesome. the unlocked extra modes are pretty neat too.

I just completed the game with 100 percent (and finished DoS last week).

I enjoyed the experience; however, after six Metroid-inspired Castlevania, I think I'm starting to become indifferent. I agree with many of the assertions to the recycled nature of the last four portraits and enemies.

I think Iga should try to focus on creating a quality 3D adventure like Lament, as this formula is starting to get stale.

As far as where it stands in the GBA/DS pantheon, I'd probably say it is 8/10 and second best (after Aria of Sorrow). SOTN stands as the best, simply because it was the first game (well not technically if you count Simon's Quest) had incredible music, decent voice acting, the best cast of characters and graphics.

If you are talking about the north american version, you are out of your ****ing mind. SOTN is the very definition of bad video game voice acting.
