Castlevania Portrait Of Ruin (DS) thread

Finally beat the Nest today... yeah the
dual Frankenstein
battle was rough, and the fight with that level's boss was, too... at that point I just kinda spammed the spells and used potions. Now all that's left is the final battle.

Overall I found this game to be rather disappointing; the graphics in both the backgrounds and enemies are extremely inconsistent, the
repetition of the 4 main areas
, etc. Maybe I'm just getting sick of Metroidvania.

Okay, I'm doing something I rarely do: giving a game a second chance.

I'm playing it through it again. Gonna try and soak it in a little more. After two portraits, my opinion on the level design holds. I'm liking the music and graphics a bit more. I wonder how my overall impressions will change.

I played this for 90 minutes back in December before putting it down in disinterest.

I started a new game yesterday, and I'm around 3 hours already, having a ball. I love that level
with Legion as the boss.
I'd be interested in hearing your complaints about the game. If not retyped, then how about links to your past posts on the subject?

I was pleasantly surprised with PoR. According to the game's clock, I'm at about 16 hours and level 43. The dude I got it used from played it for less than 7 hours. :)

I could just summarize them here briefly. I did beat it back in December, just for point of reference.

My biggest complaint was that the fusion of the two stage types-- progression from level to level and exploration-focused levels-- was poorly done due to A) level design and B) game philosophy. Basically, I thought bought segments of the game were hampered: the linear parts because the difficulty was significantly compromised (imagine playing Bloodlines or Rondo with no challenge) and the exploration parts because they were kind of shortened somewhat. I also feel the level design of some of the levels is poor. Rarely do they take advantage of the two-character mechanic, for example. If you want to have individual levels, you should make them interesting by making them more challenging. The levels still feel fundamentally like traditional Metroidvania playing grounds...restoring your health when you save, for example, takes a lot of the intrigue away. Also, there is little meaningful platforming again, which is a hallmark of the old-school style and I felt should have been included. Symphony has more meaningful platforming.

Geeze, I did a poor job of summarizing there. Kind of all over the place. :\ Charlequin has better posts on like page 11.

You like Nation of Fools, but I was on the other side of the debate when I played in December. I thought it was unnecessarily cumbersome to traverse. Sandy Grave is my other "oh wow" point because the level is primarily a completely uninteresting straight line.

Others claimed that the game was more action oriented and had a lot of the RPG elements removed or pared down, but I think ethelred did a fairly good job of dismantling the latter claim way back in this thread.

But I don't know, I seem to be enjoying it considerably more right now. Maybe I just have more time to enjoy it or whatever. Last time I played I failed to save three times and lost a significant chunk of progress each time...that might have done it. Dunno.

My other complaints are story and presentation oriented. I wasn't crazy about the music, though I like it a bit more now. I do feel that
Brauner
is a completely shit villain.

I hear the level 1 cap is rather interesting though. Last time I played I was so frustrated I just completely gave up, though, once I had finished it. I will try it this time.

I think I'd score it about an 8, and I'd give Symphony a 9.5 and Dawn of Sorrow a 9.3 or so. I really love the series, so even my gripes are like, "Well, it's great, but..." type gripes. Nothing game breaking, but I do feel it is a step backwards.

The review I am most in agreement with in the mainstream is Jeremy Parish's 1up review.

Hard mode level 50 cap is being a pain in the ass for me with Jonathan/Charlotte, yet I'm at the final boss for the sisters on Lv1 Hard with not a lot of difficulty and under an hour. Maybe I'm just really bad at the game with Jonathan/Charlotte.

Before I made my map things for a speedrun with
Richter/Maria
, I just played through on normal and finished at level 25 or so and found the last parts difficult. It took awhile but I finished and probably had an easier time than I am on hard mode right now!

Since this thread was bumped, I'm gonna ask a question:

Are the other Records, besides 5, worth it? What a nice surprise that Record was btw!!!

The other 4 records are songs used in the game's stages (normal/non-bonus music, If you know what I mean)...

I can sell them to you if you want, just send me a PM with your friend code :) ...

The soundtrack is out... 2 discs...
The second disc has high quality arrangements/remixes of all the songs from the first disc (which are the ones exactly as you hear them in the game)...

Destroyer
Chaotic Play Ground
Bad Situation
Iron Blue Intention
Theme of Simon

Sooooooo much better than the originals...

Gotta admit, I like the in-game version of Hail from the Past MUCH better than the high quality version.

BTW - the few PoR songs that made it into the 20th anniversary music CD (PoR preorder package) are from the 'high quality' songs, not in the in-game stuff.

I actually am playing through Dawn of Sorrow for the first time right now. Its good yet I still seem to prefer Portrait of Ruin. Which seems to be the opposite of everyone else

4 hours into this right now, just started two days ago after finishing Justice for All. Im liking it so far, but as kevbug said, the level design isnt too special, the fusion from level to level doesnt feel fluid, if that makes any sense :P The soundtrack is pretty cool...the story is ok. I dont like the system of having to use your subweapons like knives and axes a million times before you get them powered up. The extra quests add some playability. The backgrounds are very nice for a Castlevania game, and its nice to see nome new environments like the desert and other outdoor areas - yet...the design is kind of um... repetitive...holy crap, whats with the repetition with IGA's games - in level design?? I dont want the thing I hated in Lament of Innocence to start plaguing the portable outings too. But ill have faith in IGA and hope that he will truly deliver a portable and a 3D castlevania game weve been waiting for.

So far, i have enjoyed Dawn of Sorrow and Circle of the Moon more. But Im liking this so far and I hope it impresses more, but so far so good :)

Once again..anyone know where I can actually find a good spot to level up my character(s)?

Dark Academy: room with 2 minotaurs under the second warp point. The minotaurs give good exp. and there's a save point near. There's a ring that gives you more exp. too, use it ;) ...

Well, I actually prefer the in-game version of Banquet of Madness :) (what a great battle song) ...

If you think its repetitive now......

where do I get the ring for more exp?

it looks like the status is down right now for this game and winning eleven for wifi..it was working for me earlier today. Has it down before? if so, for how long?

Shaman Ring: 13th Street, under a breakable floor in the tall room leading to the corridor before the boss. Multiplies experience gained by 1.25. If you can get another one (buying it on-line from someone) and equip both rings, the multiplier will stack...

Nope. It pulls a Silent Hill 4 if you know what I mean and it ain't pretty. Just hope you're absolutely in love with the basic levels. :lol

You know, I didnt mind it that much. I found it nice to leave the castle for a change, so much so that I didn't mind the repetition.

I got PoR a week ago and I've been in love with it. I really like how it takes the OCD of soul collecting in DoS and makes it feel much less like a grind, as you can level up your subweapons as you go. And the drop rates, esp. when you get the theif ring, are SO much more forgiving.

Just finished this. LVL 64 - cleared NEST of EVIL, got loads of items, spells - maps @ 999.4%. I kind of gave up clearing the game totally when I realised I sold the LONG SWORD and can't get a perfect clear on the quests. SO UPSET! So, I stopped farming and decided to win the game.

First playthrough... 20hours. I just put about 13 hours into this one.

regardless, game was crazy mad fun and you know what, the grinding to get rare items, never gets old for me. :D hate the ghoul king ones where you gotta wait and kill a hundred and one ghouls before they show and then you don't get no item. URGH.

Game I thought was balanced right - it was pretty challenging with boss fights and lots of regular enemies that would totally whoop your ass. Thought the 2 character mechanics was a lot of fun. Also really appreciated the layering of info/art in this title - LOVE that when you mastered the guys weapon, the art would change.

I'm going to start on dawn of sorrow next but I plugged in my cart yesterday and it has 3 slots and they're all full so I was like.. I really don't want to delete my saves. :(

bump!

I'm at the end boss right now. I'm level 42. Either i suck or this is damned hard.
There's a HUUUUUUUUUGE difficulty spike there because i was really breezing through the game. wtf. :(

I don't feel like grinding at all now. Any special abilities you are using to beat it? I don't have the holy cross. Any better weapon than the Vampire Killer?

You could try doing the Nest of Evil first to gain more levels. Otherwise... stock up on potions and go all out.

Nest of Evil?? I did miss a painting or what... I'll go back and check.
You need to have a high map exploration rate. Then talk to Wind (I think). A new portrait will show up in the first area.

I'm currently attempting a hard cap lvl 1 with Jonathan and Charlotte. Damn hard, but in someway like Contra. You just gotta know all positions and enemies very well. Intense experience so far :D

The first half always follows an extremely set pattern.

Fireball - Magma - Fireball - Magma - Dual Attack, repeat

Dual Attack's consist of:

Bat Swarm - Scythe Swarm - Shadow Scythe Explosion... Thing, Repeat

Throughout the entirety of the Dracula's Fireball/Magma phase, Death will constantly be floating on top, trying to hit you. You will need (a) significant movement space, so always run to the side of the room with more movement potential when you see Dracula start to warp in. Dracula will then be facing you when the warp is completed.

If you're lucky, Death will strike before Dracula launches his own attack, and you can jump across to the other side and get free hits. If not, try to lure Death to attack you as quickly as possible, so you can jump to the other side.

If this doesn't work (or if Dracula warps to the very edges of the room), you should still try to induce Death to attack as quickly as possible, so you have room to dodge.

Basically, never end up in a situation where you have to dodge both Dracula's horizontal attacks and Death's vertical attacks at the same time. It never ends well.

Oh wow ok. I will try that. If it doesn't work i'll go ask some FAQs.
Anyways it's nice! I hope it's not a pasted envirronement this time though.

It's just a bunch of straightforward caves filled with enemies and bosses (most of them copied from DoS). It certainly doesn't win the originality award, but it does provide a good challenge.

Shit. Wind will open this when i'm 888% with the map completion and i'm 881%...
Also, his page of quest is full so it looks like i'll have to complete some. :P

I think my last run of this was in Richter mode with a lvl 1 cap. It was pretty tough, since normal enemies could easily kill you too. Good challenge! I should get back to that, but got distracted by other games.

I should go through this and DoS again in anticipation for Order of Ecclesia.

DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!

Just when I said I would take a break from Metroidvania after my playthrough of DoS recently, low and behold my buddy brings over his DS and what's sitting in it? Portrait of Ruin. He goes....since you just beat Dawn of Sorrow, here, check out Portrait of Ruin. I'm like dude....I just played FOUR fucking Castlevanias in a row!!!! I wanna play other games!

Arrrgh....but alas, I can't get enough of these games, so PoR here I come. Hope it's good :D

Holy mother of bumps batman.

How does this compare to Ecclessia? Are the RPG elements as extensive?

I found Portrait of Ruin the weakest of the DS Castlevanias by far.

From one of my other posts ranking the games:

Bland and unfocused, with a horrible "levels up as you kill more enemies" subweapon system. The various paintings had some cool settings, but lacked any semblance of tight level design. When people say Igavanias are random platforms in rooms of various sizes, I think of Portrait of Ruin (and so should you!). It continued the generic anime art style from Dawn of Sorrow, which did it no favors. I got about 75% of the way through, but didn't finish it.

Full post here.

Yeah. I'd say Ecclesia is one of the least RPG-like of the IGAvanias, actually, save for all of its fetch-quests.

Portrait of Ruin was surprisingly difficult when I played it. I don't think it gets a lot of mention, but after Ecclesia/Circle of the Moon, I think I'd rate PoR as the hardest metroidvania. That arena is brutal. I will echo Miker's words on the bad subweapon system (the system itself is a nice idea, but it just takes WAY too long to level up subweapons*, and you level them up by using them, but they aren't worth using until you level them up,), and the level design. The settings themselves (except, I'd say Dracula's Castle) are memorable, but the level designs seem really random.

*if you picked a subweapon to use fairly regularly throughout your playthrough, but without grinding to level them up, you might be able to max out maybe 3 of the 30+ subweapons by the end of the game's "true" ending.

A good game but probably my least favorite of the Metroidvanias. I still need to play Order of Ecclesia one of these days to properly weigh in, though.

Hope you don't own a Wii U cause this month the Wii U Virtual Console will be seeing 3 (possibly 4) Castlevania games (1 SNES & 2 GBA) starting off with Dracula X followed by Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance.

P.S. I think you'll enjoy PoR especially if you liked Castlevania Bloodlines as it's a sequel to that game and it also has some (imo) nice unlockable bonus modes.

Thank you for posting the link and giving me the heads up on that thread. I would have posted in that thread instead had I known it existed LOL.

Still barely into PoR and only lvl 7. Still getting used to the partner system it's....interesting. But hey, at least I found me a claymore :)

Wow, that's a hell of a bump... and not even for a particularly good game. Portrait of Ruin was kind of alright... I remember there was some clown world in it and I think there was a train.

What a memorable game.
