I mean Mega Man 2 alone wins this battle easily, right from the title screen music. I am completely baffled by the poll results.

hard one but castlevania slaps too hard, just hearing vampire killer remixed or redone for like the hundred time it's still hype as fuck.

I voted for Megaman over Castlevania but it doesn't matter because NES Ninja Gaiden Trilogy better than both.

I think that Castlevania is better, and not even counting the VRC6 versions (that are better than most Mega Drive games). Not that Megaman is bad, it's not. But there's nothing better than this on any Megaman game (the first half is the enhanced VR6, but the second one it's still very good, and I'm considering the inferior US version when comparing to Megaman) :

Sound quality is one thing, and the JP version of Castlevania 3 may be the best music ever heard on the NES in terms of quality.
But Capcom reigns in composition. From the very first game, Megaman had incredible compositions, while CV's tracks, while catchy and hard-hitting, were mostly short and repetitive. CV1 has two amazing compositions (Walking on the edge and Heart of Fire), but Megaman 1 basically has only one stinker (Gutsman's Stage) and the ending theme is almost too good for 1987. Megaman 2's Dr. Wily theme alone has better composition that all of CV2, easily.

Castlevania II on gameboy has a better OST than any of the megaman games.

The main level themes in that game are even better than in the NES games. But on the whole, it can't touch Megaman 2 or 3.

You gotta be kidding me if that's what you talking about:

It's not about quality and I get what you say that they're small and repetitive. But the lack of "instruments" on mega man compositions make me feel the same way about them. Compared to, even Castlevania 2, they are a small reunion of bleeps and bloops. Monster Dance (4th music in the playlist) is the perfect example of that superiority.

Love both of them, and don't really care who wins. Voted for mega man btw. Very close call. This one is lovely and nobody has added it.

I love how close this poll was. Also, it was a dream come true to have both represented in Smash Ultimate along with some great remixes
It's the dream match. I love that this is a prepandemic thread and we'll just pick it up like it ain't a thang.

off to YouTube to find more hot MM tracks to post

Akumakou Densetsu is my reference point when it comes to "awesome NES music". That being said, it uses a VRC6 chip, exclusive to the Japanese version afaik.

EDIT: I also want to use this opportunity to mention a lesser known OST by an actual famous composer, Kentaro Haneda:
The original Apple II releases didn't have much of an OST (actually not any OST). So I perceive what Haneda did for the NES ports of Wiz I-III as the "canonical" OST for the first Wizardry games:
