Catch-all "Otaku Culture" Thread

Otaku's arent bad people. they are just highly interested in particular things.
that word can apply to any hobbyist, but for some reason it only seems to be used to describe fans of the entertainment world. what about model airplane hobbyists? amateur radio? Train collectors? These people are just as dedicated to their passions but you dont see the stigma of otaku attached to them. why is that? they still fit the definition of an otaku.

I guess I consider myself an otaku although IÂ’ve stopped watching anime or reading manga right now. I own a couple of figures but put them away in my chifferobe as they were more impulse buys then anything. I actually prefer manga over anime but since IÂ’ve made the switch to digital thereÂ’s just not a lot of manga on the VIZ or Yen Press apps I want to read.

Once an otaku, always an otaku :)
On a serious note though, being one is fine as long as you don't lost touch with reality. If you have a life outside of your interests, you're probably ok. It doesn't matter how much you spend on the hobby, if it isn't your whole life, then its not hurting anything really.

Might be my favorite anime.

I might not be an Otaku, but shit I've been really obsessed with Japanese electronic toys like digimons, tamagotchis, etc. I was on Yahoo auctions last night looking at all the pixel LCD toys. I already placed a bids on a few auctions through yokattaweb, there fees are pretty low. Anyone else use shopping proxy sites?

What kind of stuff did you get?

You're an otaku by definition. but like I said as long as you can function in society, it doesn't mean a damned thing negatively.

In honor of this thread I *tried* playing(term used loosely) Katawa Shoujo....

ya it isn't happening.

I dont blame you. Those PC virtual novel/dating games are rather boring. I fell asleep playing one before.

Otaku no Video 1 & 2 are on Youtube.

Watch it if you've never seen it. It's a mockumentary about Gainax's creation and early years in the industry and otaku culture in general. Good stuff. Haven't seen it on the shelves since the VHS days.

Tatakae Otaking!

I've been searching for a copy of that for years.

Nenderoids are really cute no doubt. As you know I prefer to collect the full sized figurines.
Certain Nendos though are like "damn thats adorable".

Kids shows/manga for boys (B-Daman, Bakutech, Rockman EXE, Croket!, Dangun, Cardliver, Duel Masters, Danball Senki, Inazuma Eleven, etc) and mecha are my forte. I don't really call myself an otaku, but I guess I might be.

Lamu-sama! (Well her outfit anyway - I'm a very old school Rumiko Takahashi otaku)

I've never seen the second Otaku No Video (mostly because I didn't know one existed) so thanks for that!

What series are these from?

...and asking about best couples but not mentioning these 2?

...but eh it's be expected from Otakus *sighs and shrugs*

These things called Treasure Gausts

You basically fish for monsters. Train them, battle them, Poke-fishing lol.

And this too

Yeah you move it around to attack or something. It looks cool though!

Im getting these for a pretty good deal from the Yahoo auctions but I know the fees and shipping would kill it. Im such a kid..

Anyone else read Perfect Girl Evolution (The Wallflower)? I say read because the anime was an abomination. I remember reading Volume 1 from a friend's library and then I became obsessed with it. SunakoxKyohei for best couple.

It's interesting how in Japan "otaku" is quite a negative term. The English language equivalent I'd argue would be the British slang term "anorak" which is used in a similar manner, albeit really only used for non-entertainment anoraks (e.g. trainspotters, bird watchers, model airplane hobbyists etc).

I'll happily admit I can be a bit of an anorak with regards to video games (I spend too much time on internet forums :lol), but not much on the anime & manga front (only series completed: Cowboy Bebop. Mind you I did watch a bunch of Gintama and Poyopoyo hence avatar. As for manga, unless you count Scott Pilgrim, nothing). As for all the other otaku stuff: pass.

Anyone here watching the new Fistbump Teacher Onizuka drama? New Onizuka is a lot more animated than Sorimachi and delivers 500% more fistbumps.

Looks like next week is the
idol
ep.
wwwww AKB outfit

My mental image of "otaku" comes from the real people interviewed in Otaku no Video, and hearing that the word otaku has a much more negative connotation in Japan than it does in the US...my understanding is calling yourself an otaku is like calling yourself a shut-in or creep. So I've never thought of myself as an otaku even though I like a lot of Japanese pop culture.

Has any film ever been as visually opulent as Wings of Honneamise?
In the times I've seen it I've struggled to follow the narrative as I get distracted by the beautifully detailed nature of pretty much every shot.

Otaku no Video 1 & 2 are on Youtube.

Tatakae Otaking!

Can you imagine if an updated version was made which incorporated the digital age?
Would be pretty scary stuff.....

I've been searching for a copy of that for years.

Is it rare?
I gave away my DVD copy years ago. Don't tell me I made a huge mistake!

Hey, if anyone here is going to Otakon, go to the animated fan parodies (I can't remember if they're on friday or saturday) and watch Evangelion: ReDeath. My friends and I make it a point to go every year, and it's hilarious. Fan participation has been dropping off, though.

I read a lot of it back in high school.

I don't like calling myself an otaku but I guess I qualify...

For those looking for a copy of Otaku No Video, here you go. I don’t know if they ship outside the U.S. (don’t think so)*.

As far as nendoroids go I actually just ordered a couple. As I said in my earlier post I have a few regular figures, and some figmas, but never bothered with a nendoroid. Figured since I started building LEGOs recently I can give them a shot as well.

*Edit: I just checked, they do ship outside the U.S.
