Cave Story+ Switch gets first patch - adds Classic Visuals

For those who don't know Cave Story+ on Switch is getting a number of patches over the next few months adding elements as drastic as a co-op mode and "new areas". The classic visuals maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio which is actually brand new to the Switch version of Cave Story+ but other than that these are the visuals you know and love! No new water effects, no animations on the character portraits - just simple classic Cave Story.

I mean I know I'm really the asshole for paying $30 for a re-release of an old ass freeware game (hey, I love the game, what can I say), but dang man, it sure would be nice to have one of the features they advertised the game coming with by now.

First on a console at least! Neither the PC or Wiiware versions have it.

Don't feel like an asshole, it's hands down the best version. It lets you do this! I agree it should have launched with all these new features though.

Yes the PSP port was 16:9 but a few of the cutscenes look odd and the text in some items cut off. Honestly, it's one of the best free versions

You owe it to yourself. Can't reccomend this game enough. Save the bonus stages and best ending for a second playthrough though. You'll tear your hair out in frustration otherwise.

Yeah just play how you like you for your first playthrough. Definitely read a guide after, the game some pretty drastic bonus content.

This is without a doubt one of my favorite games of all time. I think I've played it at least once every year since 2005.

And the Switch version is great. My GF got it and we both 100%'d on different playthroughs shortly after. Can't wait for the co-op update so we can beat it again. It's an outstanding game.

They could change a fucking word in the scenario and it would be a good enough reason for me to do the game again.

Will replay tonight, with the OG OST to make it double worth it.

It's one of my (very, very, very late) discoveries of 2017 and I absolutely love it to death.

The Switch version is fantastic, it has a couple of QoL improvements that will probably stop me from ever playing other versions again. Stacking items erases the few instances of tedium that somewhat held other versions back and I also love how character portraits now animate and their panels are context sensitive to their sprites. That's a small change but it's great.

The base Switch game has quite a few exclusive features and these patches also have exclusive content, yes.

Edit: That being said Classic visuals obviously aren't anything new to Cave Story and should have been there day 1.

Bought the game and loved it (again).

New graphics are actually much better than I expected, but this patch is still a good thing. Will give it a try.

I would say the new style. It brings a lot more life to the game with new lighting, dynamic water physics, animated character portraits, more detailed sprites, faded caves and other attributes. It depends on your personal preference though. Some prefer the simpler and cleaner look of the original style.

Notice how in the new style King's portrait is facing in context with his character sprite, neat little addition. The game has a darker cave like vibe in the new style but characters lightly illuminate their surroundings.

Damn didn't know that, did it the old style lmao.


And I think the classic looks better, not sure why maybe nostalgia.

I have the 3DS version of this game, should I get the switch version or is this pretty much the same thing but just looks better and cleaner and a few more options?

The 3DS eshop version has widescreen :p. I know, you probably mean it's a first on home consoles, lol.

Anyway, that dog stacking looks amazing! But does it skip all the dialogue with Jenka? (Hope I got her name right...)

I own the 3DS version too but it did not appeal to me at all. I no veteran Cave Story by any means, but as a newcomer I like it way better in 2D. Also, the screen of the Switch is bigger so you are more aware of what's going on. I'm only 2 hours in but I would definetely prefer it over the 3DS version

You still give the dogs to her one by one but you don't have to collect them one by one. You can also stack Jelly (you had to go back and forth like 3 or 4 times originally during the bomb making process)

Same base game but with some subtle but quality of life improvements that really go a long way. The visuals have also had another makeover and there's new modes like co-op coming in a few days.

Thanks for the responses guys! I bought it from him yesterday so I'm expecting it soon! I'm excited for this! Always wanted to try it out and having a portable version sounds like the perfect way to do it.

Oh and Jonneh, do you have a YouTube channel? I've seen that logo before on a YouTube video.

It's incredible it didn't have the classic visual from the beginning given the fact that the new ones are beyond terrible.

Glad to see Niantic are actually capable of patching things. Maybe they'll make Binding of Isaac Switch able to be 100%'d some day.

It's frankly bizarre to me that this wasn't included from the start. Not to mention this entire port job has been soured for me by their promises of new plot-relevant areas and the evident lack of just that. Plus they can't keep rubbing it in our faces that their translation is worse than the original one on their Twitter, haha

I also don't like a game this old getting content updates but at least the next patches are adding brand new content (which also should have been there day 1 if you ask me)

I bought this game yesterday on a whim, didn't even know it was super old just that I seen it on some Friends most played switch games, I thought I remembered that it would have coop.
Pretty good so far
