CBC balls deep in the oilers?

I'm going to preface this with i am pretty buzzed but hear me out those who watch hockey.

Wtf is up with CBC riding the jock of the Oilers. I have center ice but I love watching Hockey Night in Canada. As an American I appreciate the insights they have and I also miss Don Cherry and coach's corner. So here i am ready to watch HNIC, Canucks playing at freaking home, I should definitely get Canucks cbc feed. F'ing wrong...

Now please don't get me wrong. Shorty calls a sweet game and I miss Garret. Call me a bitch but Shorty and Garret called an awesome game and kept things rolling and often amusing.

I f'ing hate CBC and their Oiler love affair. It f'ing pisses me off. Is the Oiler market that much bigger than the Canucks where they shun the local freakin' market????

Thanks all. I love hockey and I have been following the Canucks from before the twins joined the team. It used to be CBC was in bed with the Canucks but now, well, we are a far away from the team starting in 2008.

Thanks all, I am going to go back to finishing this bottle and watching the feed on center ice. I hope you all have a great weekend :)

Gafers rock!

Canadian sports channels purposely skew to Canadian teams like the biggest homers you'll ever see. Not just because it's regional (like any local team in any sport cheering the home team), but the channels are set up to always skew to Canadian teams and athletes in any sport even if it's a nationally televised game. It could be a noname Canadian tennis player or golfer and they'll get first dibs coverage over the top players. An awesome game could be going on between Lakers and Celtics that night, but if Winnipeg Jets played also, they'll all show Jets replays first. Hockey is always first unless Raps or Jays are in the playoffs. Then other sports come later. In rare cases, maybe another important sports final comes first, but during hockey season NHL replays are first probably 90+% of the time.

It's a weird slant they got because the channels can be showing local games, but their biased coverage will always skew Canadian even if a national game. It would be like ESPN always taking a pro-USA slant in their coverage in any sport or even 11 pm SportsDesk.

It's because hockey is really the only sport we have tons of success in players and tradition. So media and lots of people in the country cling to it. The only other sport the country consistently does well in is curling, but nobody gives a shit about that sport unless it's Olympics time or some 60 year olds in farm country. In other sports like football, basketball, baseball, you'll get some decent Canadians here and there, but they get overshadowed by all the Americans or in baseball all the Japanese/Korean/South American players etc... And you only got Jays and Raps as cities, so the only teams to cover are those.

You dont get such biased homer attitudes this with US channels like ESPN or TNT. You catch a game involving two teams and it's called fairly. You also dont see the commentators purposely focus on the American players over Canadians/Euro/Russian players. It all gets commentated pretty impartial. If a match includes a Canadian team, you never get a sense of USA vs Canada. But in a Canadian sports feed, they'll often skew it as Canada vs USA as David vs Goliath. So if the Canadian team wins, its supposed to make all the locals feel better they beat the big bad Americans.

As for Oilers, they are the sports channels favourite team and player (McDavid) because Oilers are Canadian, he's Canadian and over the past bunch of years the team is Canada's best chance for a cup. So they'll pick their fav Canadian team to act as dog and pony show representing Canada against all the evil US teams. What you'll notice is they hardly ever bring up Draisaitl. Pretty much just as good as McDavid in many aspects of the game. Draisaitl gets more goals and more consistent, but McDavid faster, more pts and more assists. Draisaitl is barely mentioned since he's from Germany. If whatever reason lets say Oilers tank and McDavid gets injured for life and retires, they'll then shift to the next Canadian team as the posterboy team to bet on. It could be Habs and Caufield, Ottawa and Brady etc.... But they are smart enough to know which teams and players to not promote if everyone knows they arent going anywhere or even making the playoffs. Thats why you dont see them ever get hyped over Flames and Kadri/Hubey. But if suddenly Flames got 115 pts and Kadri/Hubey are 100 pt players favoured to win the cup, they'll all suddenly jump on the Flames train.

Winnipeg Jets are technically a better team than Oilers in reg season sometimes, but they'll never use them as the face of Canadian teams because they always flame out in playoffs and their best player is American (Hellebucyk). So no point cheerleading them when they always get ousted in first or second round. As you said, when Canucks were huge 10-15 years ago going to the finals, Sedins coverage was everywhere. They were Canada's team back then. And what better Canada vs USA match up then playing against Boston.

Sportsnet also has lots of ex-Oilers staff covering games. So you'll get tons of Oilers homerism. There's a post game guy named Luke Gazdic who shows up here and there and used to play on Oilers. He always talks Oilers even if the game involves different teams. Last year during the playoffs when Sportsnet would show series involving other teams, it doesnt matter. The guy gets on TV and starts talking about Oilers and McDavid.

Actually, Canadian sports channels skewing Canadian might also have something to do with their audience being Canadian. If you think American sports channels don't do the same, then I'm not sure what to tell you. Maybe try watching one.

McDavid is the best player in the game right now and the Oilers are a much more storied franchise than the Canucks with a large following. Vancouver is not really a sports town and most people forget the Canucks exist unless they have a deep run in the playoffs.

Yeah, the funny thing is, I am getting the CBC Canucks feed on Center Ice, but the CBC's feed is the Oilers game. So I still "get the "CBC feel" (with McLean and co.). Lol and even now they just started talking about the Oilers "getting embarrassed at home". One of the things I like about HNIC is Elliot Friedman. I feel he is a really good analyst. Even if he starts talking about the Oilers, he digs down and says this is why I am saying this. He said tonight he is worried about the Oilers and gave several examples to support his reasoning.

I love hockey and don't follow any other sport they way I follow hockey. Here in the US, I used to like watching Buccigross, Melrose, and Clement and I just don't feel like I get the same as I get from HNIC since they are no longer on there. (And Panger used to drive me f'ing nuts as he was a Homer on an unrivaled level.)

That's the point. Big Canadian coverage since they are catering to being homers.

As for massive Oilers coverage, it's one part homers and one part the best chance for winning, so they jump on the Oilers train. Leafs are just as good as Oilers in reg season for a long time (maybe even a bit better). Leafs are also a much bigger market than any other city. But in playoffs they dont ride the Leafs train because everyone knows (including me) they never go far in the playoffs.

At some point Oilers will tank and McDavid will retire. Like any sports team they'll go through their rebuilding years they miss the playoffs 5 years in a row. When that happens, the channels will shift to another Canadian team to bet on.

Friedman is good because he's the only guy who really brings up rumours, trades, contracts and stuff like that. Who knows, half that shit might be made up BS. But it's still fun to listen to. He's also never been a player, so he'll likely be less biased than ex-players on the panel.

An old timer you dont hear about anymore named Al Strachan was the same. He'd always talk or write about crazy trade rumours. lol. I remember his rumour articles in newspapers back in the day (I forget if Toronto Star or Toronto Sun or both). Always about trades and roster moves.

One thing I like about watching TNT broadcasts is the unbaised commentary and the intermissions they can dig into the analysis with graphics and replays. That's an old school way of doing analysis during intermissions. Similar to Don Cherry and McLean back in the day doing replays analysis. in Sportsnet/TSN kind of telecasts now you dont always get that. They might talk about a certain play in words, but not always show a visual of it.

I really liked Coach's Corner. It was funny, he would say something, people would get mad (mostly at THE WAY he side it, meaning no filter. But then hw would bring up the stats and say, well people complained but here are the facts.

it's sportsnet calling the shots, not cbc.

Rogers is on the oilers bandwagon because it's an easy narrative to push. A canadian team led by its canadian superstar player and captain going for the cup after back to back finals appearance. Personally, oilers won't win since their goaltending is still ass.

Goal tending is manageable. 20m on Bouchard and nurse is not
