A family member involved with the Make-A-Wish foundation tells us ... a little boy named Enzo was approached by the organization after he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia three years ago.

Enzo told Make-A-Wish ... he really wanted to cook with the "Barefoot Contessa" host because he would often watch the show with his mother while resting in bed.

M.A.W. approached Garten with the wish last year ... but at the time, she was unable to meet with Enzo due to a book tour. The organization urged Enzo to pick another wish, but he told them he wanted to wait until she becomes available.

We're told the organization went back to Ina this year ... but her team responded with a "definite no" ... once again, citing scheduling conflicts.

A member of Enzo's family says the 6-year-old is heartbroken ... and asked parents, "Why doesn't she want to meet me?"

When we called Make-A-Wish for comment on this story, they told us, "From time to time, planning for wishes doesn't turn out as originally envisioned, despite people’s best intentions and efforts throughout the wish-granting process."

They noted that Ina is a "good friend" of the foundation.

A rep for Garten tells us, "Despite her demanding schedule, [Ina] participates and helps as many organizations as she can throughout the year, helping children and adults like Enzo with life threatening and compromising illnesses.

The rep continues, "Unfortunately, as much as she would like to, it's absolutely impossible for her to grant every request she receives."

We're told Enzo has now made a new wish -- he wants to swim with dolphins ... and he's already taking lessons to make his dream come true.
Thats stone cold.

If she wasn't a "dear friend" to the foundation then I could understand and respect her not wanting to take part of it.

Sad person.

I never liked her, but you know what they say, money doesnt buy class

What the fuck, why not do it?

I hate that show anyway, just garden parties for rich people and how she talks puts me to sleep.

She probably found out that his family can't afford good vanilla.

You can't just let any plebeian into your perfect country house in the Hamptons. I mean, have some standards, people.

Wtf why would she not just meet with the kid? Now look what happens, an article gets posted and everyone hates you. Good going there

Never liked her show. Always watching rich douche bag eat is not appetizing.

Oh well sounds like the kid move on to better things! dolphins bitches!

I don't see what's so wrong with this. Sure, she could make a change to her schedule, but it's not like she was actually available and just said, "No."

Also, :lol @ source.

A bunch of other tv chefs have come forward since then and said they'll cook with the kid and even fly him out and do it in their personal kitchens.

I laughed way to hard at this.

Anyway can't stand this lady, I feel like a peasant watching her show.

Easy to make jokes, but it's not like she doesn't do charity. As a celebrity you can't respond to literally every piece of fanmail or appearance request. If she cooked with, say, 4 other cancer patients and blew off M.A.W., how does that make her a bad person?

Shouldn't be held hostage just because she's a celebrity.

Also let's face it: no 6 y.o. wants this, obvious the kids parents are demanding it.

+1

Seems like they're always talking about yachting and wearing sweaters over their shoulders. Hate this show.

Cold bitch.

At least he will do something I'm sure he will enjoy more by swimming with the dolphins.

Does she cook with four other cancer patients? I think not. It's easy for her PR agency to say she's great and all.

Kinda shitty for the family of this kid to go public with this. Even as a celebrity, you aren't required to do every charity thing somebody asks you to do. It's volunteer work, after all.

Having this negative press might cause more celebrities to say "fuck it...too risky" when asked to become involved with Make-a-Wish.

This.

Sure, I'm not a big fan of her cooking either. But someone in her position has plans scheduled months in advance. She can't just say "Fuck it" and see this kid. I will give her the benefit of the doubt. She probably wants to do sonething (throwing money at him is insufficient) but simply doesn't have time. Remember, there are some well off people who actually earn their living work more than the standard 9 to 5.

Yeah, no shit. I can't fathom a 6 year old kid watching even 10 seconds of The Barefoot Contessa.

I'm guessing the parents wanted the initial meeting then decided to attention whore once they were shot down.

meanwhile another food network chef's Lamborghini was stolen, but I'm sure she cant afford to miss a show taping, or book tour to cook with this kid for a few hours.

You're right. Every Friday night her husband Jeffrey expects a fucking chicken dinner on his plate. Or else.

Oh, come on, guys.

She doesn't have one weekend available? Not even a couple of hours? Bet ya the kid would be more than thrilled with an hour to be with her and just cook.

lol at this bitch. Scheduling my ass. When Lady Gaga can embark on an international tour while promoting a single while shooting a video while recording an album while working on Polaroid while campaigning for gay rights etc and still give the same gift to a cancer patient, you better not tell me your lazy ass in a cooking show is too busy.

Even if you hate kids, you can set that aside and see the monetary benefit of positive press.

At least her meme is hilarious though.

So she doesn't want to hang out with a cancer patient. Her time is her own to spend as she sees fit.

Yeah, and the attention whoring could end up hurting the Make-a-Wish organization. If celebrities and their publicists see this story, and the negative press it's going to generate for Ina Garten, they are going to see getting involved with Make-a-Wish as a risky venture that could backfire if they or their client is busy. So, it's much easier for the celeb to write checks to other charities, and attend gala benefits.

But the family members who are pissed at Ina Garten aren't thinking about how this TMZ shit is going to impact Make-a-Wish. They're just pissed that they aren't getting their posh dinner.

She isn't obligated to make the wish of a kid just because she's rich and/or famous.

With that said, she is a hypocrite as she claims to be a "friend" of the Make a wish foundation.

Reading comprehension helps...

When we called Make-A-Wish for comment on this story, they told us, "From time to time, planning for wishes doesn't turn out as originally envisioned, despite people’s best intentions and efforts throughout the wish-granting process."

They noted that Ina is a "good friend" of the foundation.

The Make-a-Wish organization is saying she's a "good friend."

We do a lot of work with Make A Wish. And to be fair, sometimes it's impossible to accommodate wishes. We do it whenever we can. But it's not fair to call her out for this. If we responded to every request, we'd be unable to do our jobs.

Without hearing her explain why, it's not fair to judge her.

And it does seem a bit odd that

a) A six year old kid is an Ina Garten fan.
b) Parents are making a fuss.

Agent: Hey Ina, don't worry about that annoying little Make-a-Wish brat. We got you out of it. He's going to go swim with dolphins or some shit.
