The worst thing about companies like Konami and Capcom is that they have a treasure trove of rich ips which they're holding hostage.

Fuck them both.

I wish they would at least dump all of their old games onto the Virtual Console/Steam/PSN

Same goes for Sega

I have accepted most of these IPs are dead, I just wish they would return the games to the fans

Yeah they were probably my favourite developer/publisher in the PS1 and PS2 era, so many great games and franchises. I'd do a list but it would be massive.

I think they may actually have created the best game of all time in Silent Hill 2. Kinda sucks what happened to those team members because their talent was like...A++++.

Silent Hill 2 was the first title that really impressed me on how mature video games could be. That way it handled the complex feelings a character went through before and after the death of his wive and how it designed the monsters around those feelings is something truly remarkable.
That connected with an incredible atmosphere and amazing soundtrack made Silent Hill 2 into one of the finest games ever created.

The least they can do is make their back catalogue available on current systems. Its literally free money for the dumbasses running these companies.

Yeah, this stuff is infuriating. Not a day goes by that I don't want to have a well made, comprehensive Contra collection and a Castlevania collection for at least the OG whip-centric platformers.

No one made beat'em ups or licensed games as good as Konami.

My first reaction to this is "BUT BUT BUT BUT ALIEN VS. PREDATOR!"

Still, the feeling of 4-player Turtles in Time back in the day was hard to top.

Man, Contra is unforgiving as heck.

Naw. I can still clear the NES version on command with 3 lives. It's not actually *that* hard. Give yourself a few hours and a few tries, and you'll be able to do to it too.

The arcade version is a bit harder if I recall correctly, but I haven't seen it in years.

I honestly never played any of their games, despite being (somewhat) familiar with their franchisees.

Don't think I'm missing out on much, though.

Probably for the best, at least in the case of Konami. Don't think they have the talent anymore to do their old IPs justice.

I think if Konami was willing to license them out more, things would be different. After all, the guys at Good Feel (Yoshi's Wooly World) are made up of a number of people who worked on various Castlevania and Goemon games. Just make for more deals with Ninty, like they did with Bomberman.

Speaking of Bomberman...as evil as it is that Konami is sitting on their own properties, it's even worse that they're sitting on Hudson's, too. Makes no damn sense how poor 8ing can't just make another Bloody Roar, among others...

When I think "celebrate konami" i think of celebrating their 90's soundtracks on 16 bit consoles.

Can't even begin to count how many of those OSTs hit it out of the park.

If making games again or licensing them out means more games with the quality of the recent Bomberman, I would rather they didn't make any again.

For years I thought Super Contra 3 was the best Contra. And then I played Hard Corps...damn. Best Contra period.

Why exactly aren't they making new Castlevania games anymore?

Outside of the Bemani series, Yu-Gi-Oh! series, Pro Evolution Soccer series, and supposedly "Metal Gear Survive," they're not making *any* new console games anymore. They're pretty much done with that market. They've decided that the costs are too high and the returns are too low.

edit: forgot the new Bomberman on Switch.

What bemani games are on console?

It's so disappointing that they aren't even competent enough to make decent ports of their classic games available. They've pretty much squandered their legacy.

Isn't Zombies Ate my Neighbors owned by LucasArts (which would mean, now, Disney)?

My favorites:

Gradius, Turtles in Time, Castlevania, Dracula X, SoTN, Dawn of Sorrow, Metal Gear Solid, Contra (NES), Contra 3, Rocket Knight Adventure, Bucky O' Hare (both NES and Arcade).

Such an amazing catalog.

Perhaps the success of Bomberman R will at least spark interest in bringing classic IP to the Switch. That's all I can hope for right now.

Konami made the often forgotten Biker Mice From Mars game for Super Nintendo. It's one of my favourite racing games on the system.

Interestingly, the European version contains a lot of product placement for Snickers.

Silent Hill is one of my favorite franchises of all time. Metal Gear Solid is in my top 10, too. For driving them into the dirt, Konami gets nothing but a hearty "screw you" from me. SHHD Collection was the final straw for me.

My favourite developer for gens 4 and 5 and maybe 6 too, until they were completely overtaken by From Software in gen 7 onwards. So many good memories. It's crazy how low they've sunk.

In the list of franchises I'd add Vandal Hearts, a really cool SRPG on the PS1. I never played VH 2 and I hear very divided opinions about it, but I did enjoy VH 1 quite a lot.

Castlevania SotN remains one of the greatest games of all time.

Which console generation of Konami was best Konami?

3rd
4th
5th
6th

I have a hard time deciding between 5th and 6th.
Oof. 5th, I'd say.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Silent Hill
Metal Gear Solid
Suikoden I and II
Vandal Hearts

I mean that's like, a huge chunk of my top 20 of Gen 5 games right there, and at least 3 of those are in my top 10.

That said, I think they probably made the very best gen 6 game: Silent Hill 2.

My favorite:

Adventure Island
BeatMania
Bloody Roar
Bomberman
Bucky O'Hare
Captain Tsubasa
Castlevania
Contra
Dance Dance Revolution
Frogger
Ganbare Goemon
Gradius
GuitarFreaks
International Superstar Soccer
Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball
Karaoke Revolution
Lost in Blue
Love Plus
Metal Gear
NBA in the Zone
pop'n music
Pro Evolution Soccer
Rave Master
Rocket Knight Adventures
Rumble Roses
Rush'N Attack
Salamander
Shadow of Destiny
Silent Hill
Silent Scope
Snatcher
Suikoden
Thrill Drive
Time Pilot
Tokimeki Memorial
Track & Field
TMNT
TwinBee
Vandal Hearts
Wai Wai World
YuGiOh
Zone of the Enders

A once great company that totally pissed its legacy away.

SNK had its come to Jesus moment and Konami will too someday.

Hell yeah!

I never understand why PES is hardly mentioned alongside anything Konami related. It was the best sports series around in it's prime and hasn't been doing too bad as of late either.
In terms of game quality, it's doing good.
In terms of sales, it's doing terrible.

It was still being outsold by FIFA during the PS2 days, but the ratio has gotten worse. Been said a few times that the series is still profitable, so things aren't that bad.

Looking at Suikoden 2 here, wow the art style and color palette is really nice, what's the best way to play that game ?

We used to play so much Yu-Gi-Oh and PES back in the day
SO MUCH

I fucking bought a PSP primarily because YGO Tag Force 3 was the first game in the series to go from PS2/PSP to PSP exclusive

MGS, silent hill, and PRE-PS3\x360 Pes

not much that makes konami stands out against other big companies even though MGS is my favorite franchise of all time

Wish Vandal Hearts was on PSN. Never got around to Suikoden 1 and 2, grabbed 1 over the past holiday weekend to start and having a lot of fun.

They were my favorite studio for a long time.

Then something happened and I can only assume the higher-ups totally forgot what made them a cool dev studio in the first place and systematically gutted their best staff.

Isn't that partly because they started making a lot more money on mobile? While they've seemingly ditched the dedicated market (except for Bomberman now weirdly), unlike Capcom they're financially doing well if I'm not mistaken. Nirolak or one of the others who pays attention to the mobile industry would probably know.

Actually to Nirolak/others: are any of their mobile efforts the types of games people here might like?

I loved TMNT: Turtles in Time, Mystical Ninja (Goemon SNES), and Goemon 64 when I was younger. I got into Castlevania when I was older.
