First post nails it perfectly. I have seen demos that try to pretend a video is real but it's like they didn't even try. You see him start the playback. Then they show his hand movements not remotely corresponding to the directions on the game. Course then he walks away while it's still playing.

I'm not a VLC hater, and I actually find it a must have program on all my computers, but for watching Divx stuff, I have never seen better image quality than MPC and the madVR plugin.

I think the reason why people are laughing at VLC is the fact that you can clearly see it's VLC. Anyway to answer your question, I have heard some good chime on Media Player Classic though I prefer VLC personally but it's a good lightweight alternative nonetheless.
Edit:

I don't understand why people always bring up the Kinect pre-E3 reveal show. Have you ever been part of a choreographed event? Of course it's going to be pre-recorded.

It wasn't just the Cirque du Soleil stuff though, the footage on the conference itself was also faked.
