With Sony announcements still to come.. Blu-ray looks like the format with huge pile of key exclusive blockbuster content.

It has begun.

Warner said a couple weeks ago they plan on catching up on Blu Ray with what they have released on HD DVD.

Sony just needs to fix their lack of 720P Blu Ray movie output on PS3 and everything will be golden.

Not bad. Round with out with some Paramount, WB, and maybe some anime? announcements and you have a pretty darn good list for the first half of the year.

Paramount had both their blu-ray and HD-DVD stuff today. Oddly Star Trek which was announced for HD-DVD was not part of their Blu-Ray lineup.

No word yet on WB announcing Potter/Matrix for Blu-Ray as well.

The question is, with so many movies worth buying, and disney yet to release their dates.. will I be able to keep it at 2 movies a month?

Where is Batman Begins for Blu-ray?

When the BD players can ALL use Java.

Currently The Descent doesn't play on 50% of the players on the market, which sorta you know...hurts software sales. No way WB will release a big title on the market if half the people can't even play it. The hardware guys need to get their firmware updates out to fully support BD-J ASAP.

Supposedly a bunch of titles that use BD-J are ready to be announced, but in limbo because companies are waiting for the firmware updates.

Superman Returns #1 Blu-ray title for 2006

Victory!

Not for nothing... most of these announcements seem like barebones no nonsense movie releases...

I mean I hope I am wrong, but I am sure there is nothing new on POTC for me to warrant getting the BD version...

I will get the Potter movies though...

Warner Home Video Blu-ray announcement.

Planned releases for 2007 include The Matrix franchise, all of the Harry Potter films and Oceans 11 and Oceans 12. Other classic titles to be released in the first quarter of 2007 include GoodFellas, The Dirty Dozen, Enter the Dragon, Bullitt and The Getaway (1972) starring Steve McQueen. Also being released in 2007 is Alexander Revisited: The Unrated Final Cut.

Sony and Paramount will be announcing more titles in the next few days during CES. *Fingers crossed for Spiderman during the PS3 speech*

I don't give a shit about this bullshit format war and want nothing to do with it, but I wanna see Casino Royale in HD badly

Here's waht Warner said about Batman Begins on Blu-ray. From digitalbits.

We've also finally heard back from Warner per our high-def inquiry from early last week. We've spoken today with Warner Home Video's VP of HD Media Development, Dan Silverberg, about the studio's support of both the HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc formats moving forward. Here's what he had to say:

"WHV's objective is to have triple day and date releases for all new theatrical titles on DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. We began this with The Lake House and more recently Superman Returns and Ant Bully. As for our catalog titles, we would like to have simultaneous HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases. Again, this is something we have done recently with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story, and will be doing with Scooby-Doo and Alexander: The Director's Cut, as well as recent DVD releases coming soon to high def like Wickerman and Beerfest, both being the unrated versions.

We also plan to make every effort to "catch-up" the 2006 titles currently only out on HD DVD with the Blu-ray versions in 2007. There are two reasons that the discrepancy exists. One has to do with the interactivity layer for BD with respect to picture-in-picture functionality. Some of our titles like Batman Begins and V for Vendetta have extensive interactive experiences and we don't want the Blu-ray consumer to have a "lesser" experience. We expect that this enhanced interactivity will be ready on the Blu-ray side soon. The other reason had to do with length of movies and the availability of 50 GB discs. That situation has already improved, as the releases of Unforgiven, Last Samurai and Goodfellas (1/16) show. We are also working on Enter the Dragon and a few others for early 2007 Blu-ray release as part of that "catching up" plan."

warner do seem to have a bias towards HD-DVD though still. i mean can YOU explain why superman-returns on blu-ray doesn't have a tru-hd soundtrack but the hd-dvd does?

some good announcements anyways. definately some titles i'll be picking up when i get my ps3 later this year.

Aside from the fact that the first POTC movie has an absolutely horrendous transfer on DVD.

i don't remember the details of it, but there are differing standards for dolby true hd, and blu ray doesn't support the one that warner uses on hd-dvd. that still suggests that warner favors hd-dvd, but it's not as if they're deliberately sabotaging their bd releases.

Something about SACD war between Sony and Warner and if Sony allows that type of audio track on a BD it'll hurt their pride like they lost or something.

I don't think Warner is favoring one over the other at all at this point. They're catching up on getting their HD-DVD only titles to Blu-ray and everything for 2007 starting a few months is same day for both formats.

Well, the Sony/Warner War is more than a formats pride, some of it deals with the way Warners has handled Sony's TV franchises etc. So this is expected.

Doing the Math, depending on the Codec, One Disc for one season, which would be 30-50 bucks.

As for the Upgraded Star Trek on HD-DVD...UGH...move 20 steps forward with the remake, move 21 steps back on the format...

A Few Good men

The Departed

Enter the Dragon

Goodfellas

The Matrix franchise

Macross Plus

Star Wars Trilogy

ROOOOOOOOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

**** YES!!!!!!!!!!!

OK serious question...

I have players for both formats. The movie I want is in both formats. I want the version with the absolute BEST and CLEANEST picture!

Which one do I go for...HD-DVD or BR-Disc?

I mean will both versions of every film honestly have the same PQ?

PRISON BREAK!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I am curious, what's so good about Prison Break? I might get watch the series but only if it's at least as good as The Flintstones.

Assuming they both use the same transfer, yes they should look the same. I'd go with whichever format you have the better player for.

meaning what, exactly?

Where are you finding that Star Wars shit? Don't think that's quite official yet, and it can't be "assumed" by studio support. Despite FOX handling all the DVDs, Lucasfilm owns the rights and can offer distribution to whichever studio/format they please.

You sure? If it ends up being only 50 bucks for season 1 for Prison Break I'll buy two copies and give one to my brother in law for his ps3. :D

being that theres like 13 episodes being around 40 minutes each, are you sure they can fit all of that in HD on only one disc?

I can't really explain why I love it. Its just hooked me from episode one. Sure it's not 100% believable/realistic but I think it's the plot twists in every episode that keep me coming back. Wanting to find out what happens. And of course the characters are all ace to me. T-bag being one of the most underrated villians in tv history imo. :lol

As long as it's not more than 100 bucks you can bet I'll be buying Season 1 when it comes out.

Damnit, I am not going to have any money, I have thought about this a few times, asking myself, "will I re-buy season sets on BRD when I already own them on DVD?" I kept on thinking, no in the end, but now that I have seen it in writing I just have to won it on BRD :) and :(

Also, Novid, what the hell are you talking about? 1 disc? I want to PQ to look BETTER than DVD, I dont doubt for a second they could take all 20+ episodes of the first season and cram them in to one disc at shitty quality, but I want the high def transfer, I imagine they can fit more than 4 episodes per disc while still being in HD, but I expect it will still be at least 4 disc's. Say maybe 6 episodes per disc.

Any word on what Smallville season 5 on HD-DVD's disc count is?
