Changes in game sequels - "If it had been called anything but ..."

If Splinter Cell: Blacklist had been named literally anything else instead of Splinter Cell, it would've been better received.
Wait Blacklist was poorly received? I always thought it was considered a good splinter cell game obviously not as good as CT but still a good splinter cell.

The Warhammer Dawn of War series, while Dawn of War II had its fanbase it should of been called "Warhammer: Squad Command" or something along those lines, however Dawn if War III, that game should just be forgotten from history as some sort of attempt at making a Starcraft/MOBA RTS hybrid that sucked ass to play.

Driv3r was a huge miss with how they wanted to copy some of GTA's mechanics and allow you to leave the car to move on foot. The game should be exclusively about driving cars.

Driv3r was seemingly reactionary to GTA3 (amongst its many questionable issues,) but Driver 2 did have on-foot bits before it. (No gunplay, I believe? but it did have car-jackings.)

Damn, I must've forgotten that bit. Anyway for me the best way Driver works is when you stay in the car all the time (I didn't even mean "teleporting" in Driver San Francisco).

RESIDENT EVIL 4: THE THREAD

The game that almost killed survival horror.
Resident evil 4 didnt do this, sure theres afew action parts where ever enemy drops ammo but you still have to micro manage your equipment and some scenarios are pretty difficulty adding to the fear that the series is used to, changes had to be made at the time as they struggled to come up with a sequel (look at the ood build of res4) of anything it was resident evil 5 that derailed the series and made capcom recreat the abomination that is res 6

Resistance 2, Fallout 3/4/NV/76, GoW4 - gameplay-wise those game are not what they origin from.
How was resistance 2 any different to the first? I thought it felt like a proper sequel, there wasnt that many changes to the first game, id say the third game was more of a drastic change considering it felt completely different and also didnt have multiplayer

Two weapon limit, no HP bar in favor of auto-regen, the whole MP was completely different then the one in RFoM, long story short, many fans agreed that Insomniac "CoDolized" the game. 3rd game went back to the weapon wheel and HP bar, and the MP was also resembling what was found in the original.

Well, damn. That's a hot take if I ever saw one.

Could you explain?
My problem with gta4 was the cognitive dissonance that was so damn pervasive throughout the story. Nico was this kind of, sorta, nice good guy who didn't want to really have to kill or hurt anyone...and yet he was killing and hurting people all of the time, this also threw a lot of conflict into the idea of you running around and killing people and destroying things like a maniac like people are want to do in GTA games. Sure, that dissonance has always existed in GTA games, but nowhere was it felt more strongly than in the fourth installment. Nico was just TOO NICE of a guy.

The Mark and Execute alone makes it one of the worst games in the series.
I hate that shit.
Blacklist is just Conviction with marginally better level design.
Double Agent was the last good Splinter Cell.

Resident Evil 6 and Dead Space 3.

I played both their campaigns from start to finish in coop with a friend and IMO they were really fun action games to play.

It's just that the coop obviously takes away most of the horror and suspense out of the environment, so they should have been made for a different franchise, or at least presented as spin-offs instead of "main series" numbered titles.

TLOU2 -
should have been different characters and not TLOU1 ones changed.

RE4 and later RE6 advanced movements -
Straight up, this should have been the evolution of Dino Crisis 2.

For me it was Final Fantasy XIII(3) never got me to finish it, this time mechanic was a total killer for me. And this after i platinumed FF XIII-2

Red Steel 2. Exceptional game held back by way too much baggage.

Also the setting for RS2 was totally different as well (cowboys vs japan)...so it really didn't need to be weighed down by the branding.

Max Payne 3 had a horrible setting change which ruined a lot of the fun. Should've stayed in winter New York or some other similar location. The game would've been definitely better received if it wasn't called Max Payne.
Almost forgot Max Payne 3.
Not saying the previous games were all happiness and sunshine, but it was just misery porn and not a moment of levity.

Far Cry Blood Dragon/Primal.

I think they both could have been given room to explore their concepts outside the Far Cry name.

Halo 3: ODST

Although the gameplay isn't changed much from Halo 3, the moody atmosphere in the night sections where you explore the war-torn city and have to use VISR mode are so awesome and something not seen in a Halo game since. I also think it's some of Marty's best music from the entire franchise. I wish it had been a full-fledged Halo game instead of just a stop-gap until Halo Reach.

Double Agent was the last good Splinter Cell.
But u don't have to use it? On Perfectionist difficulty it's disabled by default?

Front Mission Evolved... Amazing Tactical RPG series to a generic action mecha game.

Left Alive.... Why this thing even exist and why the hell this thing is part of the Front Mission series? Amazing series with a generic spin off to a new game that is just unplayable and have almost nothing to do with the series.

Kevin Hart Crying GIF by Team Coco

If they were not part of the Front Mission series, Evolved would be an ok mecha game, while Left Alive would be only an unbelievable game that it's only purpose is to show how bizarre are the producers at Square-Enix to release such a piece of garbage.

DmC and MGSV are both fine games in their own right, but (imo) bad entires in their series'

They would be far better received if they were new IPs. They easily could have been too.

I feel like it worked well in 2, in that the only goal of exiting your vehicle, was to find another vehicle. No guns/combat.

My vote goes to Quake 2. Besides being a state of the art FPS as the original was at the time, there are no bridges between the games. Completely different aesthetic decisions. From medieval cosmic horror to flying cyborgs. Should've been a different IP. Soundtrack was also light years worse.

Alundra 2 is my pick. This game was pulled down by the legacy of the Alundra name. It has nothing to do with Alundra. It should have been called Flint the Pirate Hunter. It is a great game if you separate it from Alundra.

It had voice acting that was "okay". People give it a load of crap about how it failed to live up to the Alundra name. Alundra was more of a zelda clone and really the only one the Playstation had and people get very protective of it.
This is more actionRPG and had nothing to do with going inside peoples dreams.

Final Fantasy XI, XII, XIV, XV, VII Remake, Resident Evil 4, 5, 6 and 7 (and now Village). Ar Tonelico Qoga, Uncharted 4 (maybe? I just don't feel the game as I felt 1, 2, 3 and Golden Abyss. Even though, The Lost Legacy feels like a real Uncharted 4 to me).

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and all subsequent Metroidvanias. A few of them are superb, but it should be considered a separate fork from Classicvania. (Think Mega Man vs. Mega Man X to a greater degree.)

See if anyone remember?

Toejam & Earl 2.

Weird ass decision to go from 3D to 2D and ruin the free roaming - especially when playing 2 players. My brother and I loved the first. The second one was not bad but should have been a different game or at least a spin-off.

RESIDENT EVIL 4: THE THREAD

The game that almost killed survival horror.

I'd argue Silent Hill 4 onwards did that and then walking simulators like the Medium and Amnesia became more of a focus

Besides we got Dead Space and the Evil Within Series' from an inspired team from RE4, it can be done and done well if needed

"Battlefield": Hardline

Funny because everyone keeps begging for Battlefield: Bad Company 3 then Hardline comes out with the best Rush gameplay since BC2 yet everyone abandoned the game and shits on it.

But u don't have to use it? On Perfectionist difficulty it's disabled by default?
Yes. Only in Perfectionist. It should've been disable for all difficulties.
But it only disables the "Execute" part of the move. You can still mark enemies and track them through walls. Something they took from the Far Cry series.
It should've been disable as well. That "track your enemies through walls" shit is so goddamned condescending. It sucks in Far Cry and it sucks here.

The problem is that playing the game without the Mark and Execute is an exercise in frustration.
It's like trying to play Dishonored without the Blink and the Dark Vision.
It's not fun at all.

Blacklist is just marginally better than Conviction. It's the fifth best game in the series right behind the first four games.

Not even close. No destruction which was the major factor why BC1/2 were so damn fun to play, and the reason why so many people want a sequel to this particular series. Squarish map layout instead of linear which gave all that controlled yet intense pace. The lack od infantry vs vehicle combat is also lacking in BF games since BC2, where there were shitloads of mounted weapons across the entire map, so you always had means to fight vs vehicles no matter the class you played or when you simply run out of ammo. The list goes on and on, the sad reality is there hasn't been anything remotely close to BC2 experience ever since.

If Splinter Cell: Blacklist had been named literally anything else instead of Splinter Cell, it would've been better received.
Splinter Cell series was my first thought too, I'd go further back to Splinter Cell: Conviction is where the series changed the focus from stealth to action-oriented.

Agreed 100%. RE4 was an extremely well polished game, but the lost the intensity of "scarcity", getting past a room full of enemies with limited ammo. In RE4 I always had ample ammunition to take out any/all enemies thrown at me, reducing the horror-element.

Yakuza again, from action combat, beat em up to turn-based BS. Also add to that cellphone chase sequences:

Timestamped:

Maybe they wanna bring the game to iOS and Android.
