In order to minimize any impact on the "back end" database and whatever issues it may cause, they should just add a new profile field, and let users choose to show either this new "username" field or their current PSN ID.
Kinda want to change mine, but I also like having my screen name be universal, so unless Neogaf starts giving us the option I'll probably never do it. Lucky I thought ahead making this one intentionally meaningless so that while I may grow tired of it, I'll never have a reason to really hate it, like a Ray Rice tattoo or something.
I think they said it was very involved and complicated with their system. But seeing as how they can't even get us online friend notifications 10 months after launch it might as well be impossible.
Off the top of my head: PS+, trophies, PS store purchases, friend/block lists, whatever else I'm forgetting...
Creating a new PSN account and getting a new name with it might seem like an easy solution, but it's a workaround that doesn't actually fix the problem.
Sony is pretty damn slow on their updates, and the PSN has some really idiot policies... I dont know why till this date we can't change our PSN IDs and neither change our region (even for like each 6 months). That's what keeps me a bit wary about their online system.
I'm glad the Beyond crew continues to put Sony's feet over the fire on this one. They need to at least be more transparent with what they're trying to do to solve the problem.
