channeling gaf: maf is retarded (nsmb)

I replay SMB a bunch cause you can't just start and stop where you want unlike in this game and to see if I can top my high scores, another thing NSMB lacks.

Why can't you just pick up and play NSMB? Why can't you replay to try to top your high scores? The game does have scores.

I agree it is a good game, I think the haters have 2 steps above mere nostalgia goggles, no they went and got the nostalgia laser eye surgery and now they literally can't look at a mario game without comparing it to the experience they playing mario 3 or mario world ... when they were kids that were easily impressed instead of jaded old men.

I'm one of them to some extent but you know , I can admit it, as useless as half the mario 3 powerups were I miss them in this game and in some ways I was hoping this'd be closer to mario 4 then being more like mario 1.5.

The only honest complaint I can send towards it is it's music, but again that is mostly the nostalgia lasik surgery talking. Koji Kondo's stage music for mario 1 has been engrained in my brain since I was 5, same deal with the majority of mario 3's soundtrack, even some of mario world's soundtrack. You simply won't have childhood nostalgia topped so it's no sence faulting a game for failing to do just that.

IN conclusion, it's a great game and I agree with drinky crow, haters can eat a dick.

The most common complaint I saw was OMG NO NINTENDO MAGIC, or something like that.

It might be hard to explain what it does wrong, but I'll bet it's just as hard to explain what it does right without going into the same sort of floaty "It just has/lacks the feel!" argument. There really isn't a lot to the 2D Mario games, so that feeling, along with how long it takes to beat are very important, much moreso than when discussing other games.

ive tried to keep a fairly low profile with this game as i dont want level spoilers, but i do wanna know, is there and equivilent of the leaf or the carrot in this game? or just ol school small/large mario with the addition of huge mario?

heh, while this game doesn't have the awesome physics of smb3 it's still pure enjoyment. it's just so vivid, and contrary to smw it is easy to pick up on too: my girlfriend has been playing the hell out of this game since release - I am shocked. great game.

also, goombas approve of the music. :)

Think SMB rather than SMB3.

The game is just as good as the other marios and it is really up there with smb3 and smw. If you don't like the game, you never liked mario to begin with because it's very similar to the others.

I was really hesitant to pick this up because of the bad rap it got but shit, it's an amazing title and I can see myself playing this over and over again. It's different enough to feel new but at the same time, it still has the old school charm in it. The name new Super Mario Bros is really fitting.

Think SMB rather than SMB3.

I disagree, the game is a lot more like SMB3 than SMB1. The only difference is that you don't have tanooki, frog and racoon mario. The level design and map design also mimic smb3 a lot more and so does the move set (though it's closer to mario vs donkey kong as far as moves go)

Why is it so hard to explain why this game is good or bad? I haven't seen anyone really attempt to explain it one way or the other, and every time I try I keep coming back to the "Feeling" talk.

Do you like the previous mario games? Yes, then you like this one. No, then you don't like this one. It's that simple.

You either like Mario or you don't.

people that hate on it expected more new gimmicks and didnt get it so they think its not that good.

But I do like Mario.

If I had to describe how it made me "Feel", I'd say the game was trying way too hard to feed off of my nostalgia. Every level seemed to be trying to scream "Hey, this has all sorts of cute references to level designs in past games. It's Mario!"

I didn't like that, and I really thought the gameplay was way too basic. The game really needed more variety in the suit department. And the minigames I have so far are a real bummer too. Just Mario 64 DS rehashes.

And oh yeah: The saving, wtf?

lazy bullet point list of why the game rocks ass

*classic gameplay that's easy to pick up but difficult to master
*great graphics that make the style pop out
*additional moves from the 3d games such as the spin-hover and wall jump
*it's a new 2d mario game, jesus

yep, and not only that, but the level design is amazing in places and awesome the rest of the time. especially if you compare it to the previous real 2d mario game, super mario world, which was just a complete dud as far as the levels went. ugh. thinking about smw and its awful level design sicken me.

the only thing that bugs me about nsmb is the 3d map. such ugly low poly crap. but that's quite a insignificant annoyance overall..

lol what

I just preordered a DS lite so Mrs. Stinkles can play fucking Brain Age and Animal Crossing on the ugly jumbo Kinder Surprise shithole original DS and I can rock out more Mario.

When I preordered they said they were probably only getting White ones and I was all, "OK that's fine but can I get a black one if you do get different colors" and GameCrazy bitch was all, "There is no black one."

I swear a dude from Gamespot let me play with his piano black DS at E3. Or did I dream it?

These are all bullshit complaints. First of all, anything included in the game besides the main game is extra shit that doesn't affect the game itself. Secondly, the saving works the same way as it did in smw with the exception that you can save more often in this one.

The level design in this one is great, there is a sense of nostalgia but it doesn't come off as a gimmick. What the hell did you expect from a mario game? Did you want mario to have a water cannon instead?

I just got through to World 7 (after I beat the game) and I couldn't resist cracking a smile when I was bouncing through the deformable clouds and riding the roller coaster-esque platforms. I'm enjoying it a lot more after I beat it for some reason. Blowing by the levels the first time was fun, going back and finding all the secrets makes it a lot funner.

Music's super catchy, but still weak for a mario game.

you do realize you can save anywhere, don't you

After you complete the game... I certainly can't save anywhere, only when I unlock a path with coins or beat a castle.

I'm surprised, I haven't heard a lot of negative anything on NSMB so this thread is weird. I have to say though, for some reason I get this feeling that here lately Drinky is playing a "rope a dope" with people and is going to try and make up for a lack of Thursdayton at E3.

Go look at the official thread, it's a huge troll fest.

I've been reading some complaints on this game, and one I see every now and then is that some levels are too short. I just played through and beat Mario 3 the past few days and some of the levels in there are literally over in 15 seconds. If you had no problems with Mario 3, I don't see how people could be having this problem with NSMB.

Minigames: It's just lazy, and I'm calling it as I see it.

Saving: Am I just remembering wrong? I'm pretty sure you could save anywhere you wanted in SMB3/SMW.

Level Design: I really don't think I'd call the design great. I know it's a matter of taste, but with how easy it is just to zoom through most of these levels bothers me. I especially dislike the haunted mansion levels so far, all of them are way too easy.

Drinky loves old-school Nintendo, but dislikes "blue ocean" Nintendo. It's really as simple as that.

NES SMB3 had no saving. Probably could save anywhere in SNES/GBA versions, but I don't remember. Super Mario World let you save after beating a castle or ghost house, so effectively you could save at any time by just quickly flying through the Donut Ghost House.

It is lazy, i would liked more but that isn't the main draw of the game so i don't care about that.

I don't know how you can say the level design sucks. I'm playing the 5-mini-castle right now and it's one of the greatest designs of a stage i've seen. It's so simple, yet difficult and fun. (It's the stage where the floor raises and the spike balls come from the sides.

I don't know how on earth you can complain about how easy it is too zoom in this game when it's so much easier to do so in smb3 and smw. Have you played those games recently? You can beat the stages in seconds and there's a lot of stages where you can just fly through to the end. You can't do that in this one. I finished at 100% smw last week and the stages in this game are a lot longer in general and feel more complete.

I love smb 1,2,3 and world and i'm a big purist when it comes to these games. I feared that nsmb would not be able to live up, especially after playing it at E3 last year but no, it lives up to the hype and to the originals. It's an awesome game. You really need to go back and play the originals again and you'll see that this game is just as good.

As for saving, it was pretty much the same thing in the old marios (except for smb 1 and 2 obviously).

P.S I hope when you talk about super mario world and super mario bros 3 you aren't talking about the advance versions. I don't know how the saving worked in those, i'm talking about the true originals.

I don't think he was asking what your favorite Yoshi game was.

You're not forced to keep progressing. Even Mario 3 had it so you couldn't replay the levels until after you've beaten the game. This is one trait from Super Yoshi World that shouldn't have been passed along to NSMB. As for high scores well your score doesn't reset after beating the game! So you have to delete your save file or start a new one.

so basically, the game sucks because you have the ability to go back and you can't use basic arithmetic to know your best score for a runthrough

Do these points completely not make sense to anyone but me?

I don't understand them either. I'm almost 100% convinced that the people bitching are people who were young during the psx/n64 days and are going back and playing these games. Kids these days are really spoiled and can't appreciate classic gameplay.

she's older than me, and I played the original smb christmas '86

so there's really no excuse

There is nothing that this game could have done to avoid being hated on. Too many people are blinded by nostalgia I'm afraid. :(

The good news is that GAF seems to operate on a hive mentality and Drinky's endorsment of NSMB should open people's eyes to awesomeness.
