Awesome

Not sure.

Max from Shining Force.

I love this design (this is actually artwork from the GBA remake, but the basic design is the same). The Shining Force is a ragtag group of warriors, and their leader looks the part:

They went from that to this piece of shit in Shining Force Neo:

What's with those eyebrows? :lol

Wait, it wasn't Max in Neo was it? I never played it because it wasn't an SRPG, but if it was really about Max...christ.

FU Square Enix for ruining this classic rpg!

Neo doesn't take place in the same continuity/universe as the original series (as far as I know), but certain characters (or at least character names) appear with new designs, most of them terrible.

It's a great game though, if you liked Record of Lodoss War on the Dreamcast. It's basically the same (same developer).

Original 2003 design:

2006 redesign:

That's always been a case of "WTF were they thinking?!" for me. The original is nothing special really, but the redesign is such an obvious downgrade. And I've never really been able to connect the face on this redesign artwork with the face of Ashe in the actual game.

While the original Ashe is more attractive, I have always found the redesign to be better in line with the character and her dubbed VA.

That's actually pretty cool. It looks like Soul Edge is taking over more and more of his body as the series progresses. The SC2 iteration is still my favourite though. :D

What I've learned from this thread:

- Adding pants where before there were none - Good. Sorry, 1st Link. Can't be a badass without pants.

- Taking away fabric in the midriff of male clothing, - Bad. Belly shirts are bad design on men.

- Overtly sexualizing female characters, such as but not limited to: bounty hunters, street fighters, killers, and a computer programs - Bad. When you literally dress to kill, you're not partially naked.

Dude, that is her ALTERNATIVE OUTFIT, the redesign was this one:

That design was made on purpose to look completely different, it was a fresh new look for a character, but non Canon.
This is actually not a bad redesign.

How Nomura managed to dodge jail time for the design choice of Mickey in KH2 is nothing short of amazing.

And no, I can't post the picture. The rage is still strong.

So what are these two games? (I know their Lufia, but I looked and there were quite a few Lufia games.)

Also, someone needs to do a Cid post from every Final Fantasy.

Why the fuck are people bitching about the current Max Payne? Isn't the character's design a reflection of his current condition, narration-wise? Were I a Max Payne fan, I'd be pretty excited to see exactly where Remedy's going with that. That's pretty ballsy. I've never heard of a character redesign with plot continuity being that drastic.

Didn't know everything you all liked about Max Payne was wrapped up in a stoic grimace and silly trench coat.

I hate. Hate. HATE. Mullet Snake. With a PASSION for hating. That character design choice, among many other things, helped generate my contempt for the series after MGS1.

Seeing Silicon Knight's Snake made me hate the fact that Kojima kept the mullet even more.

What? Silicon Knight's remake of Snake lacks any artistic direction. He looked aweful. Actually that whole game looked bad. It was an embarresment seeing that game next to MGS2. :(

Current Rufus

You know, concept rufus might look good on paper, but the current PLAYSTYLE of Rufus would not allow any non-fat characters to begin with. So in the end, his playstyles is awesome, his design and his game is in perfect harmony. Should it be the skinny Rufus, he would not be the Rufus we play with now.

"What?" right back. It's the same art style, a very similar engine, reflecting a different game. Geometry and character designs are simpler due to the nature of MGS1. I liked the look of TS better than MGS2 as a whole.

I don't see how Snake can possibly look "awful" to you. His model looks EXACTLY like MGS2 Snake without the mullet and beard (which gives him the appearance of being younger).

Fail. What the fuck have you done with the pic of MGS1 Snake? Twin Snakes Snake just looks like a simpler version of MGS2 Snake with the mullet hair simply cropped off of the same head....

MGS1 snake's design did not translate well into Twin Snakes, it even looks worse than the PSX version, which is a shame because the original 2D concept is still really good looking

I agree in theory, as the original Rufus would have been another goddamn shoto clone, and the series needs that like a hole in the head.

But they still should have kept at the drawing board a little longer for a fat Rufus design that wasn't a retarded beach ball mutant.

I'm shocked at the hate the Twin Snakes design is getting. I don't know what the fuck is going on in this world anymore.

For my tastes, it's easily the best rendition of Snake. I like simple geometry and aesthetics.

*edit*

And it's not really the TS redesign I'm championing here, it's the MGS1 Snake design in general. That's my favorite Snake design, period. The TS design is just my favorite rendition of it.

How... intriguing.

SE has nothing to do with this remake aside from actually allowing us to play it.
