Check out my Zelda 23-hour impressions!

Wow, 23 hours and four dungeons.

Huge, especially considering that the dungeons tend to get more difficult and time-intensive as the game goes on.

I'm completely avoiding the spoiler thread now. I went in there and read something I probably shouldn't have. It's going to be even harder with a December 8 launch in Australia.

Great write-up! I'm psyched! I avoided all of the spoilers, but I'm happy to hear that OoT-like "mini-dungeons" are back, and that the game constantly ties into prior games and legends!

anyone know if there is anything to the equivalent of gossip stones in this game? I loved finding a new one in OOT and reading the mystery it contained.

Othersteve, what do you think of the game, generally speaking? Is it the best Zelda ever?
Can't answer that quite yet. Sorry! :)

I am really enjoying the game so far, though. I've been playing it non-stop, and I'm really not sick of it at all.

OOT has mini-dungeons? When I think mini dungeons, I think of MM.

Ice Cavern was one. Also, the dungeon where you got the Mirror of Truth was an informal sort of dungeon, wasn't it? My recollection's a bit hazy.

And I specifically brought up OoT because, unlike MM, it had a NICE amount of real dungeons to compliment the "minis".

If I didn't have FFXII to play right now, I think I might just lose my mind waiting for this game.

I didn't highlight spoilers, but I looked over some of your impressions, they're good stuff. Thanks for posting.

Of what you've played so far, how would you rank it compared to other Zeldas? You've seen a fair chunck of the game and experienced what the scope of it is. So I would like to know if so far, is it up there with the best in the series? I know your last paragraph told us to wait for final judgement, but some indication of the overall experience would be cool, just a teaser or something.

edit: looks like there's been a similar question already... ah well, doesn't hurt to try.

How much padding is in the game? By padding, I mean things like unskippable cutscenes, aimless wandering, uneventful long travel times, boring fetch quests and the like. I found OoT, despite its qualities, to have a little too much of this sort of padding.

All i want to know if the game is filled with little details, like the gossip stones, funny things, the mask trading..that kind of stuffs classics from Nintendo.

Oh man, the wait for the Cube version will be hard :S

not just the wait... looking at the mess that the spoiler thread has become and the flood of refugees to the non-spoiler thread, it's going to be just as hard avoiding spoilers.

The game’s soundtrack is also pretty amazing—easily the best in the Zelda series, in fact. There is a wonderful blend of new and existing tunes (most existing ones have been remade into longer and more epic compositions, some adapted to sound quite different from their originals). Here’s a partial list of some returning songs to whet your appetite:

Nice.

Give in. It is your destiny.

Unfortunately, I don't have $280 CDN + $60 CDN to spend on a Wii and Zelda, not to mention that the waggle to slash still seems really annoying to me. Oh well, like the other poster above, atleast I have FF12 to pass the time and by the time the Cube version comes out, my first term of University will be ending.

You just gotta stay out of any Zelda threads until after you finish the game. It's a ways away for us Cube folks, but it's worth it not to ruin the game for yourself.

Just play all the other awesome games out this fall!

Anticipation rising!! Eeeeee!!! I did not preorder the game. Hope I will be okay walking into the store and getting it on the day it's released.

Isn't all that "padding" part of the joy of adventure?

What do you want, dungeon, dungeon, dungeon? That's all there'd be in a Zelda game without all the "padding"...

Hey guys,

Cross-spammed from IGN Boards! :D =P

Check it out now!

Enjoy!

If anyone's got any questions, I'd be glad to answer them as well... mostly spoiler-free, of course, that is. ;)

In your 23 hours of gameplay, have you yet found a piece of music that was clearly recorded by an orchestral ensemble? Something that clearly decimates that crap ass musical quality that we've heard so far? If so, could you mention in what cases did such pieces appear?(nothing specific, like a "boss fight" or "cut-scene")

steve - what are your feelings on the control?

I've heard mixed reviews about the Wii control. Some, like Matt from IGN, claim that they can't go back to playing zelda games any otherway.

While others mention that the Wii controller has been not been such a smooth experience. It's not very responsive and it can become a chore.

Did the Wii controller AID or HINDER your enjoyment of the game? Answer honestly.

Well going along with TSA, who I assume is in the final dungeon and has about 51 hours on the game, the game length is looking long but great :D

BTW, how do you know it's been exactly 23 hours? Does the came carry an in-game clock for saved games?

p.s. ignore my previous question, I hadn't read your impressions at that time. :P

(slight spoilers)

The closest thing to padding is the dark insect fetch quests near the start of the game (before each of the first three temples). This is how you... well, let's just say it opens the way to the temples each time. It is indeed a fetch quest, albeit a very mild one, as most of the insects are contained in close proximity. The good news is that finding them isn't really monotonous at all thanks to the fact that their locations and the strategies used to reach them are varied throughout the tasks.

Haven't seen enough yet to comment on how much of this stuff there is... but it is there. It truly feels like a classic Zelda game.

There, killed two birds with one stone with that answer. :D

Snah,

The sword control is gimmicky but works very well regardless (though no better than a button obviously). It does free up a button, however.

On the other hand, the aiming control is a godsend. Arrows, slingshot, etc are all very easy to use in most situations, and aiming is just plain second nature. It beats searching your way there incrementally with an analog stick any day!

Hey, OS, thanks for your impressions and for answering our questions. :)

Okay, first! What kind of TV/cables setup are you using and what do you have to say about the image quality? I ask because I recently played Wind Waker on an LCD tv and that game has really bad dithering in 480p. (there are a lot of places where the colors get kinda pixelated). Furthermore, how bad are the jaggies (aliasing) in TP Wii?

And secondly, how are the dungeon designs so far? Are they more like Majora's Mask style of dungeons or are they more like Ocarina style of dungeons?

Thank you very much for your time.

Well, sadly, I wasn't provided with component cables... yet. So I'm still on composite with upscaling via my LCD television from 480i. :\

So yeah, obviously, lots of jaggies, color bleeding, and all that happy horse feces.

The dungeons... oh, the dungeons. The one I'm still working on right now--the fourth one--(it's been taking me around two hours so far) is just rough. And it's the FOURTH one. In terms of atmosphere, design, and creativity, these are probably shaping up to be the best Zelda dungeons in any of the 3D titles. The first four I've played through were all quite impressive, though mostly the third and fourth ones.

Masterful level design and some really sinister puzzles await you!

OMG. I love a challenge! You just sent me to the moon! :D

I have two questions.

A)How challenging are the Wolf parts? From the 2 IGN videos, they didnt look too bad.

B)Personally, how interesting do you find the story up to where you are? Based upon that, how would you expect someone who's read impressions up to the 2nd dungeon to be after that point?

But how easy is it walking around with the nunchuk and wand? I assume the wand controls the camera? How does that feel? And the stick, does it feel weird to be walking with that little controller in your left hand?
