Chemical Plant Zone is a Dump

Yes. See, I have to look it up. Because I was a man and did it the real way!
Well, not really :( I could never finish it for real with all the emeralds.

I did, once, when I was a teenager. I got all seven Chaos Emeralds by Wing Fortress Zone so I could only transform into Super Sonic in that level, but damn was it awesome. :lol

Shit, I didn't even know there was a level select. I know there's also something about a Debug mode in the first one or something, but... I've just always played through the games normally :lol

What???
That's one of the best levels!

And FYI, I can up those rotating platforms before the water rises everytime.

Maybe someone should go back to Sonic school to get their diploma in Liberal Chilidogs.

My least favoutire in Sandopolis from Sonic & Knucles.

I loved Scrambled Egg Zone in the SMS/GG version of Sonic 2, especially the music:

Dude, that's like one of my favorite levels out of my favorite game of all time >_>

I mean... that level has some of the most weird music, in a good way of course. Hell that level is like the king of alternating paths too, once you get a hold of the all lever pulling it becomes one of the most fun levels in the game imo.

Man, this thread reminds me how much I love the old Sonic games. Might be time for a replay on the old Mega Collection soon.

:D

And I never knew that shortcut existed either, despite playing Sonic 2 to death back in the day due to me being a poor kid and only buying one game every 6 months.

oh shit, I just remembered that the one time I got all the emeralds in Sonic 2, I DID cheat -- I used the level select code to start the game in the special stage so I'd get one extra crack at getting them all! I... I've never truly beaten Sonic 2.

WHAT HAVE I DONE

Meh, just jump at the right time. There's plenty of margin for the timing, don't have to get it exactly the same everytime.

The key to that part is don't rush. Don't be phased by him nearly drowning too. It takes ages for him to drown once the drowning music kicks in, and even though it's only seconds, it's easily enough time if you don't rush.

Son of a bitch, I missed the shortcut >:(

And now that I'm here, I just remembered... I HATE AQUATIC RUIN TOO >:(

I like the robots from the cartoon though :D Although they're green (in the cartoon, I mean).

Also, PS2 controller = lame for Sonic :(

All parts of classic Sonic games where you go underwater traumatize me to this day. It's not that they're poorly designed or anything... it's just that they're so fucking scary.

That music o.o

I love the music :lol Me and my girlfriend love doing the "Bu-BWAH!" sound too :lol

I always hated Aquatic Ruin Act 2, I would always miss the jump onto the swinging platform at the beginning and have to spend the entire level underwater.

Wow, I've played through Sonic 2 a good ten or so times and didn't even know about that Chemical Plant shortcut!

And that Tetris bit is easy, just as long as you don't rush, take care not to get squashed and time your jumps right. Just don't fall back down when you get to the top of the water!

These people complaining about Chemical Plant Zone... If that level is tough, how'd you even get past the title screen?

Metropolis Zone is a tough one. Casino Night Zone has given me trouble in the past.

Also, the Carnival one in Sonic 3...

Casino Night? That level had next to no enemies or bottomless pits. The only way to get yourself killed is to stupidly let one of the moving blocks crush you. If Casino Night is tough, how'd you even manage to figure out how to put the cartridge into the Genesis and turn the power on?

Well in his defense, it CAN be tough to navigate all the bumpers and slot machines -- they're annoying at times. I suppose you could die from the timer hitting 10 minutes after you've been frustratingly bouncing around the whole time.

Chemical Plant is awesome. The part at the end of act 2 just requires a bit of planning (and fearlessness) to get through, it's not that bad otherwise. As I kid I always remember dreading the Aquatic Ruin boss more than Chemical Plant. :lol

Mystic Caves and Metropolis though ... pain. That's good though, I guess.

This.

If you know what you're doing, you don't have to deal with that part at all.

It's just like "that part" (you all know what I'm talking about! :D) in Carnival Night in Sonic 3. Once you know what you're doing, that part stops being such the head-ache it was, and you go on.

Now, if you REALLY want a hard Sonic game? Go play Sonic 2 on the GG. Not the Master System version, you MUST play the GG version. :lol

Beat that game with 100% completion (getting all emeralds, defeating the true boss), and then you might have room to complain about a truly hardy Sonic experience. Compared to that, any thing else you could name is child's play.
I think that was the only game that I never beat the first boss of. Or one of the other GG ones but it was hellish.

I've played Sonic 2 more times than I can count and I never knew about the Chemical Plant Zone 2 shortcut. :O

I resolve to try that on my next playthrough.

Honestly, I love every single Zone in Sonic 2 (even Metropolis), but I find my Sonic 3 and Knuckles playthroughs sometimes ended prematurely by the back-to-back Marble Garden and Carnival Night Zones, neither of which I particularly care for. I mean, I like Angel Island and Hydrocity, and the Zones that follow Carnival Night are awesome, but those two Zones just feel like the weakest links. I haven't done a vanilla Sonic 3 playthrough in years, but sometimes I play through solo Sonic and Knuckles since most of the best Zones are in that one.

Which is funny, since you can just jump up on top of the totem poles and render the boss fight useless, heh.

Reading the replies in this thread made me realize that saying about GAF reading about games but not playing them is true, GAF sucks at games confirmed...

I mean most of you have trouble with Sonic 2....really? And the OP is having trouble on the second level???

I'm not trying to be a dick...but seriously guys. Play more games, get off the internetz.

I got all the Emeralds doing a Knuckles playthrough but never beat the final boss because I didn't realize Knuckles was too short and that I had to do the glide thing to beat him.

I liked your idea, Nincompoop =P

Am I the only one who always beat Robotnik by getting behind him? You can get, like, four easy hits at the start of the battle by getting behind him when he first stands up.

the trick is to slow down and focus on platforming in that area.

Usually when you are underwater you are in a hurry to get out (the music doesn't help) and make mistakes. If you take your time that area is cake.

I am joining the "never knew that shortcut" party for stage 2. I will add that Sonic 1 has way more frustrating levels (though I tried Sandopolis from Sonic and Knuckles and failed--stupid ghosts!).

For Robotnik with Knuckles... I just attack him when he lands, run to the left until he's up in the air again and repeat until he's dead... not too difficult, jsut a bit longer than when playing with Sonic...

You're welcome

I wished I knew that code back when the game first came out. My cousins got it, and I lied and said I had beat the game already. So they dared me to prove it. The plus side: I got to play the game all day long. The down side: man, I really hated some of the stages, metropolis zone and chemical plant zone first and foremost.

I don't even like Sonic 2 but I played it alot when it was new. Whats with all the people here not having all 7 emeralds by the second sign post in level 3??

Oh man,I wish I had a working adapter or my Genesis right now.. I feel like playing all these games again (I have Sonic 1, 2, Kuckles & Spinball). Sonic 2 was pretty damn easy compared to Sonic 1, which I don't think I've ever beaten. That game is crazy.

I always found Sonic 1 waaay easier than 2. You guys are smokin something.

I got gameovered earlier :( Will try again later...
