China is now making fake DS systems.

If bootleg Chinese GBAs are anything to go by, it probably doesn't work fine, at least with all games. We could use some testing, especially of GBA games and DS games with Slot-2 accessories.

Wow. So shameless.

Isn't the DS Emulator open source? I bet it's just running linux and emulating the DS lol.
They're not. They are running the same OS as an official DS. If it wasn't for the build quality being slightly off you could not tell the difference.

In order to do that you'd need the fake DS to have the power of a good desktop PC, and probably a couple of years worth of emu optimisation targeted at that platform. If a fake DS could do that, (i) it would be a bombshell on every gadget blog and (ii) please take my money.

Anyway, I'd love to see a teardown too. Considering that every DS part can be bought on DX, it's highly plausible that they're just wrapping old DS mobos in brand new counterfeit packaging as others have suggested. I'm almost tempted to buy one myself, just to find out.

That was my very first console, that i bougth with my own money from my very first work as a teenager. I didn't know it was a knockoff then since it was sold even in big stores as a "japanese Nintendo"

What the hell. I think that was my first console. I had NO idea it was a fake :O

Add me to the list of people who got duped into buying that fake Famicom. My parents bought it for me when I was like 6 and the only games I can remember on it were Contra and some tank game with a level editor that was pretty fun. I always thought it was weird that all the games were programmed on it, and didn't figure it out until a couple of years later when I learned about that type of stuff.

I lived in the Middle East at that time though so I'm sure that the real thing was near impossible to find and these things were everywhere.

Yeah, it seems like many clones in the old days came into being because the real thing wasn't available everywhere. Like the Spectrum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ZX_Spectrum_clones (all 47 of them!)

Hardware cloning as a concept isn't such a bad thing; if no one had cloned IBMs, I wonder what sort of desktop PCs we would have now? Would Microsoft as we know it exist?

I don't think it has a third button. Just a place where the button is missing, like an eye that's been poked out.

So the Phantom did come out! And people said it was vaperware.

I remember an E3 2004/5 when they had a lot of demonstrations over the Phantom. One of the guys actually spearheading the project was there talking to everyone. Obviously they had their own booth and it all looked pretty neat. I covered it as part of the gaming press I was back then. The peeps were nice and seemed genuinely proud of their progress.

It seemed decent enough at the time.

Can't believe it went absolutely nowhere. I feel like I took footage of a ghost. I suppose in this industry one has to get used to companies/projects/ideas disappearing into thin air more often than in other industries.

What was the third button used for in the NES games?
It was either Start or Select.

The third button was one and the Blue Button on the top was another.

I miss my phantom system. Many hours wasted on Ninja Gaiden and Double Dragon. That controller is not that bad, it's just a Knock Off Genesis controller.

I wonder who the fuck came up with this one tho:

It was another NES Clone controller - it was awful.

That looks like a cat where the D-Pad and Face Buttons are its eyes and the start and select button are its teeth.

Deal Extreme (website based in China) has been selling these "refurbished" DS Lites for over a year or so now. And I think what someone else mentioned makes the most sense: they're likely official Nintendo guts in replacement packaging and casing. That site also sells replacement casing that matches all the various colors of their refurb consoles. Hmmmm. I'm fairly sure that's the origin of many of these "knock-off" DS Lites (or maybe their supplier is). But it's definitely not worth the price compared to buying a still-available new unit at your local retailer.

What's amazing about the fake HDD, is how they went the extra mile and modded the USB firmware. It shows up as a 500gb drive when plugged in and when writing files to the USB drive, it continually rewrites over the oldest set of data, so you never get a "out of disk space" error. Ridiculous!

Yeah, I agree that they aren't fakes, just refurbs. You need serious resource to clone something as complex as a DS.

A massive proportion of the flash memory on ebay (SD cards, USB drives etc) has had the same thing done. 'Bargain' SDHC cards are almost always fake, packaging and all. The sellers tend to have 99% good feedback, because most people don't notice they've been screwed until much later on.

I bought a supposedly new Japanese vibrant blue PSP-3000 off of eBay a while back. Advertised as brand-new shipping from Japan. When I got it, it came from China, and everything except the PSP was fake... AC adapter, manual, accessories, battery, etc. The PSP itself looked legit and everything worked fine although when I compared it to another PSP-3000, the buttons felt different, like they were looser/used. In hindsight, it probably was similar to this... a refurb dishonestly being sold as new.

I later just bought a plain black PSP-3000 core system. It wasn't the color I wanted, but at least it was guaranteed to be new and legit.

If I was JParish, I'd be pissed too.

Another problem is on some online retailers, you can get refurbished (or second-handed) DS units with brand-new third party plastic shell. The Zelda limited unit is particularly present on ebay, it can sell very well but still is a counterfeit. However, this particular model is easy to spot, the real thing only came in its Phantom Hourglass bundle.
Grr, don't remind me. I bought one of the Zelda edition DSLs and then lost it when I took it with me on a family trip. Still have the external box, inserts, and all that jazz :-|.

My current DSL is in one of dealextreme's aforementioned replacement shells, since both the hinges on the original case were broken and the top was literally falling off the bottom half. It was originally a white unit - now it's black & cobalt blue with white buttons (because I thought the white buttons looked spiffier than the black ones that were included with the replacement shell.)

I'm with the others who are saying it's probably a "refurb" DS with replacement parts.

That fake is based off the Famicom design. The one you had could have been one of the real ones.

Update on the fake DS

Update: bogus DS seller has offered a refund if I leave them 5-star positive feedback. Classy! Dispute resolution it is, then.

Guess that explains why so many bootleg sellers have great feedback.

Basicly there refurbished units with cheap replacement cases you can buy on hong kong sites like dealxtreme.

Been around for a few years now.

Damn, the DS Lite is the only DS I don't have, always wanted one as a slight upgrade to the phat while retaining the GBA BC.

So are these (real ones) getting expensive/hard to find on Ebay now?

Although the reversed A/B buttons on the DS ruins GBA for me many times, I'm probably better off finding one of those "v2 brighter screen" GBA SP's to replace my GBA SP.

Brilliant, 128MB Flash instead of proper drive, and, most amazingly, they have also modified firmware of the "drive":

he tried it out in store and it seems to work!
BUT they moded USB firmware to act like 500gb hdd, and all files go in the loop!
So you upload file11 and you upload more files, and when space is low it delete the big part of file11, just few bytes are there so you have a feeling that file11 is there

It's obviously a real DS with an aftermarket case, something which can be purchased from any number of places for people to convert themselves.

If Parish won't fix his article, at least fix the OP.
