China's JXD S5100: The 3DS XL challenger

What exactly do you mean?
Smaller?
An actual computer able to exist on it's own?
A device to cannibalize nintendo's other handhelds?

smaller
more attractive
not sure if the UPad operates by itself so i can't comment. I mean.. compare the front of the two.
the kirf is sexier

Okay, when fucking China is smart enough to create a knock-off 3DS with TV out, why the fuck can't Nintendo do it?

Why the fuck can't Sony do it, either?

I've seen what a 3DS game (Kid Icarus) looks like on TV out, on a small tv screen.

It isn't very pretty. It should be there but I imagine image quality would be really bad

sexy and ergonomics don't often agree though. I'll take comfort over sexy for about everything these days. I'm indifferent that my white 360 pad looks like a fisherprice toy, nor do I care that my ps3 controller looks like something from the 90s.

Not really, but thanks for the backseat modding all the same.

ah, so it's just a 'good sport' kinda thing.

Too small, uses silly nub, uses ONE silly nub, get a tablet, wayyyy better. It looks like something out of apple and nintendo like everyone said.

I just can't get around spending more money portable handhelds, especially when we have two premium android tablets to keep us busy, with a third one on the way.

It's a google.

Later versions of PSP had tv out. Earlier ones didn't. I assume the case would be the same with Vita and its revisions.

Press units already have the feature, I believe.

only psp1000 didn't have video out. Only dev vitas have video out (unless something changed the past month or so).

Add a rounded back grip, which the UPad itself lacks because its too large for, some deep triggers, and a second analog and it's perfect. It'll still look better than the uPad

Yeah, it was some type of Vita I remember having TV out. Press was the first word to come to mind, thanks for clearing that up for me

So by PSP logic, and the fact that implementation is already there, the next Vita revision should have TV-out. At least, I hope it'll be there.

That actually looks rather nice.

Assuming the touchscreen is at all responsive.

And since it's a $75 dollar Android device, I assume the touch screen is, in fact, not at all responsive in the slightest.

I went to the Wii U Experience event in New York City not too long ago, and when I got to try out the Wii U GamePad itself, it feels really light and comfortable. It also has a back grip. Whenever you get a chance to try out the Wii U, you'll see for yourself.

I'll stick to my pandora. Shoulder buttons are pretty vital(and yet they still made room for three totally superfluous buttons at the bottom).

Why does the quote say "PowerVR GPU" but the picture say "Mali-400"?

Anyway, at that price I could see myself buying one just for emulators if it had shoulder buttons.

The Vita rip-off looks pretty nice. Will keep an eye on it, I wanted a good handheld emulation device for years.

Is there a website or some resource that has a list of console/handhelds that were released in China or worldwide for that matter?

I don't understand the point in something like this, why not just get a controller for your phone...
Well, for one, controller attachments suck. And with something like this, you aren't using your phone battery for gaming -- I usually want my phone to last longer than 4 hours.

Some of them suck, yeah, but some of them don't. And some of them will even charge your phone from the battery inside the controller while you game with it, so it never actually shortens the usual phone usage time.

Gingerbread
No shoulder buttons
Speakers on the back

Why would I buy this, even for $75?
Uhh Gingerbread? It's not 2010.
Gingerbread actually has better game compatibility right now because lol android

This one may not be the best but sub-$100 units like this will eventually eat the rest of the portable market that iOS hasn't eaten alive.

Im fucking screaming. Chinese PSP knockoffs getting ICS before Droid 3's and Skyrockets

No carriers to get in the way, see: http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/5/31...re-the-biggest-threat-to-innovation-editorial

Looks not bad might buy one.

But please someone make a unit with OLED screen and good specs and designed like this dual analog and it would be the best emulation machine for Snes, n64, Psx and MAME :)

Don't think so, pal.
We've had chinese knockoffs of similar kind sold here since the release of the OG. DS.
Usually the build quality and game selection are/were so poor, they hardly dented the handheld market.

I think it's pretty interesting that we're at the point where these knockoffs are more technically advanced than the consoles they're imitating, and because they're using Android, they have a wider selection of games too.

The huge difference to earlier knockoffs is in actually having useful software, namely Android.

Problem iks, the build quality is horrendous, I had the BiTT gaming tablet here, and the buttons we're practically unresponsive, Now I read u can mod it, but then u have to open the device.
Don't think the casual buyer would even think of doing that anyway.

Just because kotaku writes about it doesn't mean it's newsworthy. It's just a generic media player device with emulators on it; something JXD and other makers pump out on a continuous basis. You can get most of these from dealextreme.com

Well yes, that's the sticking point (literally in some cases). But I don't think you can be confident that it's a problem Chinese manufacturers will never be able to overcome.

7 inch? Does FPse run well on it? How much is it?

Yes, 7 inch. Haven't tried FPse yet, I think it should run fine. The device is already rooted BTW and runs Android 4. Price is 129 Euro. At the moment it seems it is only available in the Netherlands and Belgium (at Intertoys).

EDIT: Oh and dual stick Robotron on MAME is awsome on it.

Chinese knockoff handhelds have been around long before the DS even. Who doesn't remember the GBAs with built-in games or even all the way back to the Famiclones (some of which were portable)?

What changes things is they can take very inexpensive phone and tablet parts, add buttons and sticks, and run Android which comes with the infrastructure and store (multiple stores in fact) to run millions of games, emulators, and apps.

Android solved the software availability and distribution issue and that changes everything.

In the end content is still king, as long as Nintendo (and Sony) make exclusive games people want to play on the go, their devices will have a market to sell to.

Which is exactly the reason why any other handhelds other than the main (consisting of DS, 3DS and PSP now) barely sell. Heck, even Vita is suffering from this up to a certain extend, and Vita is a mayor handheld (not a cheap Chinese copy).

That was before they got access to online market with few milions of apps...

Of which a fe wmillion are horrible titles that are no substitues for titles that have been selling millions for a while now.
Also it's pretty known android users don't really like buying titles anyway.
