Trump wants to blow the government up? If anything his policies indicate he wants more of it.
Trump is taking advantage of the fact that working class whites largely don't care about much of what the GOP demonizes. They care about nationalism and economy/jobs. It's why Rubio/Cruz attacking Trump for proposing things similar to universal healthcare fail. They don't necessarily hate the idea, they hate Obamacare because the GOP told them to. So Trump just says Obamacare sucks and his plan is better. And his supporters have no reason to doubt him.
I see the GOP split in three factions right now. This Trump base that is pretty similar in many ways to European far right groups like the National Front, the establishment and the Libertarians.
I think that's a great point that hasn't caught much attention.
If you check the European far right, none of them is against national healthcare or more government spending in regards to paternity leave or similar social benefits.
They are against
foreigners getting these benefits, which they believe they are illegitimately stealing from the natives.
Trump is doing the same spiel. Illegals are at fault, not Americans. All those unregistered people in the U.S. and all those foreigners coming here to steal American money from Americans.
Even the U.S. has caught on to the fact that the whole "the market will regulate itself" is a pipe dream, especially in regards to health care and social security.
But the GOP has not.
They still believe in their small government, tax cut, semi-libertarian, Christian ideal. It's not happening anymore though.
Imo the Republican party is thoroughly screwed under the current American voting system. It tries to combine to many ideologies in one party which simply is not working anymore. No matter which type of Republican you are, if you vote R you vote against your interests in one way or another. Dems don't have the problem for now, but Bernie showed the nation that there is dissatisfaction within the Dem side as well. People want a more left alternative. There is a significant portion of people who want more government, more social security even at the expense of higher taxes. So while Hillary may still appease most of the democratic voters, it's only a question of time until a similar voter split will force the Dems to unite their split voterbase.
Maybe that will also be the turning point for voting reform, akin to Canada or Australia, to make room for smaller parties.
