Jealous Bastard
i'm relatively sure i started a thread last year, and i think it behooves us to remind ourselves of all the great christmas cartoons that are so much damn fun to watch around this time of year.

try and provide links to the cartoons themselves if they're available on youtube or google video, or at least give a link to more information. i'll start with a few of my favorites, several of which are fairly well known but nonetheless awesome as hell:

"christmas comes but once a year." - pretty sure this one's in public domain, but when old men break into orphanages and start pretending to be santa claus to get close to little kids, everyone wins!

"the night b4 christmas." - no video for this one unfortunately, but i saw this a couple of years ago on cartoon network and was thoroughly impressed. it's a hip-hop variation of "night before christmas" about an elf that wants to be a rapper. it's brilliant, and totally fun.

"mr. magoo's christmas carol." - ringle, ringle, coins when they jingle! i was shocked when i finally saw this how good the music is. "ringle ringle," "the lord's bright blessing," "all alone in the world," and the one about razzleberry dressing? hell yes. christmas eve magic. this is just the ending, but if you can catch the whole thing on tv, DO IT. interesting footnote: mr. magoo is most often voted by the public as their favorite scrooge.

even blind, the man can act.

"huh-huh-humbug." - this is half of the beavis and butthead christmas special, in which beavis plays a version of ebenezer scrooge who is butthead's boss at burger world, and who wants only to watch his favorite porno: "ebenezer screw." ultimate best line from this whole thing? "in life, i was your partner. now i'm some dead guy with cool chains."

finally, a weird addition, but my favorite animated holiday commercial: the flintstones pebbles commercial. 'tis the season to be sharing, fred.

so i'll stop there! tell me about your favorites. i'm a junkie for this stuff.

At Shinagawa station they have this big mock up of the stop motion animation rudolph the red nosed reindeer.

I never thought those claymation versions of christmas stories ever made it over here. The Frosty the Snowman one, etc. hmm.

And of course the Bloom County, Garfield christmas stories, and the 'duck tales' universe Ebenezer Scrooge chirstmas story is good too.

it's the best food in the world. this logic makes total sense to me
Why is Barney trying to steal Fred's cereal, anyway? He's not even a zany rabbit or anything, he's his neighbor.

Some help.
I think Cartoon Network stopped showing some of the better ones use to have could be wrong but was looking for.

The Flinstones one. Think there are about 3 of them or so.
Think Chipmunks have one as well.
Pac-Man X-Mas don't know why but was always a fan of that one.

I like the Disney take on The Christmas Carol with Scrooge McDuck.

it's available on dvd in "mickey's christmas classics." i bought a copy last year after someone suggested it to me.

hard times have fallen on bedrock. the strange thing is that they use rocks for currency, are surrounded by rocks, and never realize they could just chip off what would ostensibly be an unlimited supply with almost no effort

but that would lead to runaway inflation. :D

rudolph really is very very good. have any of you watched it lately, though? it has one part that is hilariously sexist, in which donner (i think that's rudolph's dad in the movie) tells his wife, when she contends that she should join him in searching for their son, "no. that's man's work."

i was looking down making turtles and my mouth just dropped open and looked up, in complete disbelief that i'd heard it. hilarious.

they tried to replicate rudolph's success last year with the "olive, the other reindeer" movie with drew barrymore's voice, but it was pretty below the bar. of the newer stuff i've seen, the cartoon network stuff is usually the strongest. the johnny bravo christmas special is fantastic (johnny forgets to send his and his momma's letters to santa, so he goes to the north pole to tell santa what he wants), and dexter's lab has a really funny one in which he holds santa captive, thinking it's his dad.

this one's blowing my mind. cbs apparently produced a stop-motion, claymation special in 1987 of various characters--including the california raisins--singing christmas carols and cracking jokes.

from wiki:

In this television special, anthropomorphic dinosaur hosts Rex and Herb (thinly veiled versions of Gene Siskel & Roger Ebert) introduce several segments featuring clay animation and Christmas music.

anyway, i actually found it online, and it's pretty charming. then again, when is claymation not not charming?

:lol I posted that earlier in the thread : A Claymation Christmas Celebration. And yes, it is awsome.

it's an old (and obviously grossly unpopular) thread from over a year ago, but i wanted to bump this up to give everyone a reminder and the opportunity to watch some great christmas cartoons!

watching "mickey's christmas carol" at work right now, and loving it. partake, chums!

I tried to get a thread going a couple weeks ago about this. These specials are essential to my annual holiday viewing habits.

I'm a big fan of the Rankin/Bass stop-click animation specials, but certainly love them all.

I was watching Mickey's Christmas Carol not too long ago - it's still so great - the animation is beautiful and the way all the characters fit into the story is great.

But, above all, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, is my favorite. :)

Rankin and Bass had a slew of lesser known, but still very fun specials:

The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold
The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus
Pinocchio's Christmas
The First Christmas

do you have any links where i can watch any of those? always looking for new, interesting stuff!

here's an article on topless robot about "the 10 most underrated christmas specials ever." gotta agree with that mr. magoo's christmas carol pick. that one makes things get a little dusty for me.

That's pretty good - I love some of the ones discussed on toplessrobot, but haven't seen a lot of them!

Leprechaun's Christmas Gold:

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

Life and Adventures of Santa Claus:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5

The First Christmas (not great quality):
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

I love this thread. Thanks man!
I forgot all about the Guba website. Seems you can't download the movies off of it anymore.. ah well, still nice to watch them :).

yeah, definitely! i'm watching "how the grinch stole christmas" from that link you posted. one year later, my deepest thanks, haha.

The Year Without a Santa Claus is always fun to watch because of the goofy Heat Miser and Cold Miser segments.

My favorites have always been the Grinch, Rudolph, and Charlie Brown Christmas. I have a videotape of those three specials that I made in college and we used to watch those three shows all year.

We had drinking games for each one. The Grinch was the best - every time they say "who" you have to drink (the end of the show when they all start singing "Oh-who, Wah-who" is deadly). For Rudolph, you have to slam your drink every time his nose lights up. The rules for Charlie Brown changed occasionally - usually they involved drinking when a certain character spoke, or when the characters started dancing or singing.

Very good... Did you see the new special this year on ABC Family, A Miser Brothers' Christmas? Yeah... not really too great.

Charlie Brown for me too.

There's also a more recent cartoon I seem to see every christmas about a french orphan girl called Madeline who is kidnapped by a man pretending to be her uncle to turn her hair into lace. Perhaps not directly related to the christmas story, however there is a rumour the Pope drinks tea from a cup decorated with the pubes of Christ.

Oh my god. I've been looking for 'The Christmas Toy' for so long but I could never remember the name of it. Thank you for posting that list. This christmas truly is magical :)

It just came out on DVD this year too!

Hmm... looks like most of the famous ones have been mentioned already.

There's an episode of "The Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries" called "It happened the night before Christmas" that I seem to remember being pretty good.

I don't understand what you're saying here...

it's a lyric from the song in "muppet christmas carol" about scrooge.
