Chrono Trigger DS screenshots/videos

#2 on my all time list, let's see if you hold your place.

Who am I kidding, it's fucking Chronotrigger.

I think the font was in part so they could cram more text in (since the original translation had some details edited out for space reasons), but something else it could be... Square US used some common fonts for their English translations, I remember being able to replicate FF6's and I think Chrono Trigger's exactly with 8 point... I want to say Tahoma, but that's probably not right. There might be a small legal issue with reusing the font.

Then again, that font is the very core of their US teaser ads (which links to http://www.goodmorningcrono.com/), so I doubt that's it.

The font is Chicago, although it's modified slightly.

The new font is definitely tiny. I'm not worried, though, because I thought DQ4 DS's English font was too small in screenshots, too, and it turned out to be fine on the DS itself.

I really like the new main menu design.

We need a new word to end the 'Game Of The' thing... Damn.
Best Game of All Time?

Best there was, best there is, best there ever will be?

I'd think of more but I think you get the idea.

Definitely don't like how the font looks in the videos. It's not just that it's tiny, it's just flat out hard to read, especially on that background. Maybe it won't be as bad when it's actually on the DS screen, though.

Also, I really do hope there's a way to turn the anime cutscenes off. Interrupting the scene in order to show the scene twice back to back is just dumb.

Still, it's Chrono Trigger. The two screen battle system looks good. Me want.

Check out the link in post #29 vs the one in the OP to see exactly how the translation has been changed, for Frog in particular. It's... pretty significant! I don't expect EVERYONE to be retooled that much, but Frog is definitely a lot less of a caricature now.

You only need air, water and food, everything else is dispensable.

So up to you.
I didn't ask for a reply of stupidity. IS there a difference that warrants a purchase other than its on DS.

CT was one of my favorite SNES games growing up, so this is a definite day one purchase. I can't wait.

Can't wait to replay this baby. I wasn't that hot about this port until some weeks ago. Then something triggered clicked inside me and I was suddenly needing it.

The most exciting thing about the new menus is that they allow a lot of space for item and spell names, so they don't have to be truncated like they were in the original. And stuff is laid out a bit more intelligently overall, in my opinion.

They're practical, but it looks ugly.

Holy crap. Were those anime cutscenes in the Snes version? This looks sweet too.
No, they were added in the PSX version.

I don't think they're ugly at all, although I could really do without the brushed metal background.
Maybe it changes along the menus when you choose another color scheme. I hope so.

Looks great. This is the game I've been debating dusting off my DS Lite for.

Like however many others, I'm not a big fan of the font they're using or its size. It's especially bizarre that they have such huge buttons for Attack/Tech/Item and yet they only have tiny centered words in the middle.

But this is Chrono Trigger, still reigning supreme as my favorite single-player-only turn-based RPG after thirteen years, and possibly set to become better than ever with the new dungeons, so it doesn't matter too much. The menu's much less cluttered too, which is great.

I just hope they've added Aim Tabs so Marle doesn't eventually get totally outmoded for physical attacks and Lucca won't have to rely on
her random damage gun
. (Although Marle always pulls more than her weight for me anyway with her spells and dual techs and basically everything else.) But who knows if they dared mess with the game balance, really--I'm not sure I would have if I were them.

Also, being able to turn off cutscenes means I just might never watch those things. ♥ Thanks for the option, S-E; I was genuinely worried about that one.

The font looks small, but much like the DQIV font, it's eminently readable on an actual DS unit. The menus are an unbelievable improvement; it's far easier and quicker to navigate through the options than in the SNES version.

Frog's style of dialogue seems to have changed quite a bit, though Gato's silver point song is almost the same.

I love how Crono's position on the bottom screen map updates accordingly when he does the cinematic jump to downstab the Dragon Tank. :D

I think the tiny font is just a ploy to get us all to upgrade to DSi with its bigger screens.</conspiracy>

Looking good.

I thought Mitsuda was redoing the music of the game ?
It seems 99% identical to the SNES version music to me.

Well, it's still good, but I'm a bit disappointed.
I'll still play it !

A couple of things I noticed, don't know if it has been said:

The map on the second screen auto-completes.

Quick access to any of the menus, with a touch.

Return of the Anime videos (yay!)

Anyone else use their $20 Wii Music Amazon coupon to pre-order Chrono Trigger?

$21 and change, shipped to NY! And it looks like this game has TWO preorder bonuses via Amazon. A $5 Amazon coupon, and a disc with music. Woohoo!

They're not fighting characters..that's like giving Alena healing spells. Miracle Shot/Lucca's spells do perfectly fine anyway as well, and Marle does good with some dual attacks (Ice Toss comes to mind). No real need to make them better attackers.

When's the game coming out in Japan?

This is one of the few game that I classify as a "love at first sight".
The moment I heard the birds at the beginning I somehow knew I was going to have a blast... but it was actually much more than that.

11/20.

I was just checking Amazon.co.uk to see if it had any pre-order bonus or something (like 95% Amazon.co.uk has nothing of the kind compared to the Amazon.com) and just saw that the game is going to be released on 30 Jan 2009..

So I better grab it off ebay next week, because I'm not waiting 2 more months for it.

NOOOOOO..... i don't want to have to buy a DS just for this.... GAF help me... what do i do?????

Don't worry, there are at least 20 more super awesome games you can play on DS too, it won't be just for this.

looks exactly like the original version. Not that I'm pissed since I never played it

Alright Square-Enix employee deadbeats, when's this one out in the UK?

are you against importing or something. Plus, it would probably be cheaper to import it

Every screen of this game just increases my hype to stratospheric levels. This game is going immediately to the front of the line, everything else will have to be pushed back.

I don't. I kinda hate it.

You can turn it off apparently, and play in classic mode.

How sad is that?

Sad?

How exactly is it sad?

1. Chrono Trigger one of the best RPG ever made.
2. Square-Enix one of the top game developers in the world.
3. Nintendo DS, Top selling, current gen console.

What is exactly sad about any of that?
