Chuchel's main character redesigned to avoid claims of racism

Update to come soon

Amanita Design will be rolling out an update to redesign the main character of its wonderful game Chuchel soon. The reason for this is that a few fans have voiced that the titular character resembles the racist depiction of black people from 19th-century theater. Since Amanita is a Czech-based studio, it had never even considered the possibility that its original design could be construed as such.

In a post to its Facebook page, Amanita explained, "In reaction to a number of requests we've seen coming from the players throughout the year, we ultimately decided to swap Chuchel's colors and change his body color from black to orange. We acknowledge that due to significant differences in culture and history between Central Europe and other regions, we did not consider the possibility of Chuchel, a living dust bunny, being associated with 'blackface', a theatrical racial stereotype which emerged in the United States in the 19th century."

"We would like to sincerely apologize to anyone who has been offended by the original appearance of Chuchel. As a team of peace-minded creative people, we simply do not want any of our games and characters even remotely associated with racism or any other form of hate crime. In order to avoid any further misinterpretations, Chuchel's appearance will be changed on all platforms in the upcoming days and weeks."

Now that it has been pointed out to me, I can sort of see it. The possibility never crossed my mind when I originally played the game, but I've never lived a life where my very existence is ridiculed for my skin color. For people that have, Chuchel very well could come off as a racist caricature.

You can look at Chuchel's new design in this re-released trailer. It'll take some time for me to warm up to it, but he doesn't look that bad.

This is the kind of thing overseas devs have been doing for awhile. What looks fine to them might look really bad to a different society. If they didn't mean for an image to represent what it's not supposed to, then no big deal if they choose to change it. The new look is fine.

Kind of reminds me of the difference between the Japanese and Western versions of Oil Man in Megaman Powered Up

Yeah, I gotta say I'm okay with this one. I think they should have made him dark gray, because orange dust doesn't make a lot of sense, but I can understand how having that sort of thing pointed out to you would make a lot of developers want to change the character.

I confess, when I saw the original trailer I immediately thought of blackface, though I was sure they had no bad intentions. Well done for changing it, I prefer the orange anyway.

LocoRoco has a similar issue:

lmao, the one on the left is literally a "tar baby", what was Capcom thinking?

Wtf. I played this when it came out and was well aware of all the social justice crap but blackface did not enter my mind even once.

Nah, Blackface was exactly what I first thought of, this is an example of these sort of changes done right.

And that Megaman example posted above, that was from a 2006 game, I feel like Capcom, even being a Japanese publisher, should have known better by that point, especially given that as I said since he's "Oil Man" that literally makes him like the "Tar Baby" from the Brer Rabbit stories, did Capcom do that on purpose?

Japan, with their long storied history of minstrel shows and oppressing black people, should know better than to create a character that so obviously racist. How could anyone look at a black figure with big lips and not instantly come to the conclusion that it was created out of a belief that the black race is inferior is beyond me. I mean, look at it!
LOOK AT IT!

Y'know.... It's not bad. He kinda looks like an acorn, which is par for Amanita's characters. Also, I like the shading on the upper part of his face.

Now it is racist against fake tanners.
They're gonna be so offended.

Cute that they kept the same color scheme reversed, it works well. Good on them for not being jerks about it (yet people who didn't even think of buying the game previously or knew of it will be jerks about it on their behalf, lol). Clearly they care about that stuff if they even bother updating it post-release like that rather than just going on to state it wasn't intentional and leave it at that which would have been fine.

For fucking real? Chuchel is about as wholesome as they come.

Nine months after its release too, must be a slow season for the social justice mob.

Inability of interpreting any context wins again. Its clear that this game has underpinning racism throughout, indisputable right?

They will come for the Spirited Away soot balls next, ya cant have them ya hear!!!!

I want everyone to imagine if they made something that was designed to be wonderful and charming, a treat for all ages; however, due to a lack of knowledge, their design represents a horrific time for a large number of people. You weren't trying to make that, you don't want to make that, but you made that.

My question is, what is the issue with changing the design?

It's still charming and only offensive to the eyes of those who actively search to be offended by harmless stuff everyday like it's a sport.

Pretty much.

But people won't understand anyway. All of these SJW bullshit stems from functional illiteracy.

Face-value is the only one that counts because it is the only value most people will understand.

We're in for a rough time.
