Civilization Revolutions looks pretty good

I'm a programmer, not an artist, so I can't say much. I do think that the aesthetics are more in line with what Sid has done in the past, like Pirates!. There's certainly a more comic vibe with the leaders and with the curved world it has more of a playful effect. Civ4 was, in a way, more stoic, while CivRev wears its emotions on it's sleeve.

It's cool; I think it's in keeping with the overall approach and differentiating this game without going too over-the-top.

What is the market for this game? A hardcore, turn based strategy on a console? Anyone can run Civ 4 on a PC. Its not like its graphically intensive or anything.

I've been a huge Civ fan from the very beginning and have put more time into the series than any rational human being should (seriously, I have a major problem here). That being said, I'm definately looking forward to Revolutions. I'm always up for a new take on the Civ theme.

I've been psyched for this since the announcement. I haven't played a civ game in a long time (haven't played PC games in years) and I'm sure this will capture at least some of the things that set that series apart.

Maybe it will be a bit more simplified, but that's not always a bad thing.

We have the DS running, still working on the Wii. I'm not the multiplayer programmer, but I assume that the GameSpy API is similar between the DS and the Wii, so it shouldn't be any trouble at all.

I love Civ on the PC but I'll definitely be picking this up. Looks pretty nice. If they can get a streamlined multi-player version working well I would be in heaven.

Consoles need these types of games like you wouldn't believe. I'm looking forward to buying the 360 and DS versions. Playing this on a flight will be pretty awesome, and sitting around on my couch instead of my desk is going to be equally awesome.

i'm sure this will be great and if i didn't own civ 4 and beyond the sword i'd be more excited.

but this is great to see on Mircosofts console. I love the civ franchise.. one of the best games going.

anyone that's a fan of gaming needs to play this series.

Yeah, It's coming out on Wii later, fall 2008. I'm kinda torn as to whether to buy it on ps3 with pretty graphics and hope for mouse and keyboard support or hold out for what will probably be a fluid wii control scheme.

I might have to start following this. From the shots in the first post, it looks like they are making some good decisions in regards to the UI.

I know it will be dumbed down, probably to a significant degree. Console players apparently can't even figure out HL2's story; good luck getting them to grok Civ. Even still, I think a somewhat stripped down version of Civ could be a good thing if it means speedier play and (this is a long shot) decent multiplayer support. I think getting the game fast enough to get multiplayer going well is probably out of the question, but still, fingers crossed.

A dumbed down, faster Civ would also work well as a gateway drug to real Civ. I'm sure that's at least part of the strat here.

I got my Civ start on II, I like to play them for the stories they tell. If you guys check out civfanatics.com the people there post AGAs as stories, and the humanization of the AI as players on a geopolitical map is probably one of the greatest achievements of the game design even if its all exclusively in a player's mind. One of the best things is the character of the civilization leaders. Even the relatively stoic Civ III had some pretty amazing diplomatic text.

Anyways, I'm off topic. Guess I should dust off my copy of Civ IV again.

Mouse and keyboard support for the PS3 version is highly unlikely. We've invested a great deal of development time getting the game playing well with the normal controllers for the systems and we're happy with our current solution. Supporting m/kb would essentially require us to develop an additional interface system to support a small percentage of PS3 owners. I would be interested in supporting this if we had another 6 months or a year, but at this point I want to get the game out the door so I can share it with people.

Sweet - as long as they got the Wii motion running well - this game is mine.

Could be a good console version, but if you already own Civ IV and the expansions (like I do), then I can't imagine any reason to buy this.

Pretty much, although portability could be very interesting in this case. Imagine Civ 2 on DS *drool*

I'm an avid Civ IV fan and have been playing BTS like crazy, can't wait to try this out. Ever since I played Civ 2, I've desired a console version of the game because at the time I didn't have my own computer. Although it's not as robust as Civ IV on PC, it still looks faithful to the core mechanics of the franchise, which is important.

I would glady take Civ2 on the DS, though we're getting something way beyond that. It's going to be nice for sure, and it's not being farmed out unlike another well known franchise. ::coughsimcitycough::

The thing I loved most about Civ 4 was the new UI, they really did a great job with it.

Looks like it is changing the way it needs to for a console.
