Classic films that you feel are terrible

But really though, 2001. Fuck that movie.

And I have tried to sit through Blade Runner on at least 4 different occasions over the years, haven't succeeded yet.

Terminator 2. All the edge and grit and mystery from the first movie was removed. It needlessly complicates the mythology, has stupid humor, an annoying child actor, offputting Hollywood gloss, neuters an amazing villain, etc.

Saving Private Ryan. (Aside from the beach landing). Awful bookending scenes, Ryan is a shit of the highest order, I simply couldn't engage with him. The last act with the MacGuyver style shenanigans and that dreadful "angels on my shoulder" BS. I remember reading William Goldman's critique of it and agreeing with most of it.

The Searchers - John Wayne simply wasn't a good enough actor to play complex characters who undergo any sort of emotional development. Also most of the supporting actors were unbearable to watch.

I've never been able to make it through Scarface. It just feels like a bad made for TV movie.
I don't feel too strongly about Scarface, but between GTA III and the cheesiness of the 80s, I just can't take scenes where the soundtrack kicks in too seriously. The "Push it to the Limit" montage is the quintessential 80s movie cliché.

Yeah, I was afraid of mentioning that since the pitchforks might come out.

Haha.

The crazy thing is that I love Sergio Leone's other Westerns.

You are a bad person. Straight up.

I have no love for John Wayne but I still liked The Searchers in spite of it's performances. John Ford knew what he was doing.

Push it to the Limit is the greatest thing of the entirety of the 80's.

It's just... perfect.

I will find every one of you John Hughes bad-mouthers and punch you in the face.

I can see hating on slow, methodical classics, but John Hughes movies?! You people have no soul.

Do you have link Goldman's critique? I'd be really interested in reading it.

I don't know about how CLASSIC it is, but I detested the movie The Fountain. My sister's friend recommended it to us, and I'll admit that it was a very pretty movie to look at, but the story struck me as being a jumbled mess with a crazy ending.

Bladerunner. As a huge fan of Dick's original novel, I found I simply couldn't get into Bladerunner. Perhaps it was Harrison Ford's god-awful performance. Why people respect this man as an actor I will never understand.

Time to make a list of all the people listing 2001 and Blade Runner.

This list will be titled: People whom I will never take seriously on any topic ever again.

Did you watch the theatrical version/ international version?

Don't.

Anything before the 1970s. Older styles of filmmaking are extremely dated and it's very noticeable how they were confined within the limits of the technology at the time. It is impressive when they build giant setpieces because they actually had to build them, but I can't suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy their stories.

wow i feel like i've just been stabbed in the heart, like i get that this movie could be not for every one, and yeah first time i viewed it i did feel it was slightly convoluted but cool all the same. but detesting is a strong reaction.

story is pretty simple though, its just about a dude trying to save the woman he loves and the ending, he finally succeeds by becoming celestial and living for eternity.

but yeah i'll get back on topic.

for me it has to be the goonies, everybody i know loves this film or adored it as a kid,

i personally just don't get it, it's not good.

EDIT: also the op hit the nail on the head with ferris bueller

Like Blade Runner, The Searchers is a beautiful movie, but I don't find much going on under the surface. (I wouldn't say I think either of those is terrible, pitchfork & torch brigade, just discussing.)

I personally dislike most 'classic' westerns, though, before the Italians started their wonderful revisionism of the genre. TGFSL.

I was looking at revisionist westerns and... Some dope on Wikipedia classified Shane as revisionist? How the hell does that even work? that's like super-ultra-classic western. By the way, I just thought of something.

Shane is an awful movie.

Also as to your Italians thing. Peckinpah had Ride the High Country out in 62. Fistful of Dollars wasn't out until a couple of years later. Italians were important, but there was an American set at work as well.

I sat in a theater on opening day and laughed at it. I just couldn't help myself.

Oh yeah, Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. That's another one I saw recently that I was bored through parts of. Perhaps not terrible, but I never want to see it again.

Honestly, what I remember most from the movie was having my mind blown when I immediately realized this guy:

Got to say 2001: A Space Odyssey as well. Watched it for the first time last year after reading many great things about it but it was dire and tiresome for me to get through sadly.

Why is Titanic disliked?

I haven't seen it yet.

This thread is very revealing.

Movies aren't music.

Movies today are lacking in originality and cultural impact, but the quality of acting and directing has gotten incrementally better with each passing year.

Thus unless you're a film buff it's hard to say the classics hold up.

Because it was really popular.

I like it, but that musical montage with the bike is so stupid and out of place in a period movie.

Donelly Rhodes is great.

Because it was really popular.

No, because it was overly sappy and incredibly melodramatic. Some scenes are pretty laughable.

Unforgiven
Blade Runner

I don't think Blade Runner is "terrible" but it strikes me as a brilliant film from a technical aspect that is just bad in every other way: writing, acting, etc. It's a glorified tech demo

Dutch!

Bothered the crap out of me that I couldn't figure out where I knew him from on BSG until I imdb-ed him.

The 60's had most of the same tech that the 70's had.

There's nothing wrong with saying you don't like Blade Runner or 2001; but if you're arguing that they're objectively bad films, then most people would consider you factually incorrect.

My example for this thread would be The Big Lebowski. It's a good film, but I just don't get it.

Because it was really popular.

Also, it came out back when OG Star Wars fans still gave a shit about the franchise, and broke Star Wars's record. Much butthurt ensued.

I'm not even going to bother, I'm just keeping tabs on the number of people who don't know what classic or terrible mean.

Oh my... You... you win the thread.

While I enjoy T2 for the action, everything you said is very true

If you haven't seen it (which it's highly likely since it's never gotten a proper dvd release) find a film called "Westward the Women". I watched that maybe last month and it you won't find it on any "Classic Westerns" lists because it doesn't have a strong male lead nor is it directed by Ford, Zinneman or any other of the big western directors (It was directed by William Wellman), but the film builds itself around a large group of women on a trek across the country to California. It was revisionist cinema during the so called "Classic" period and it is undoubtedly amazing. It's rich with character, full arcs for all of it's primary, secondary and tertiary characters and has some truly fantastic stunt work that left me shocked. It's a shame it doesn't get the praise that it should because it was one of those films where the women are shown to have more power than they are ever normally given in a typical western film.

Any classic made before 1970. The old movies are horrible.

What!? A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly are all excellent. Hell, I usually hate westerns but these are some of the best films I've ever seen.

I don't think I've come across any 'classics' that I would consider terrible. I never really liked Citizen Kane, but it wasn't terrible. I probably would have liked it more if the Simpson's didn't spoil it for me. Perhaps Dirty Harry, maybe it was the era it was made but everything felt a bit cheesy, but even then it is somewhat enjoyable.
