Clint Mansell to Score Mass Effect 3

I dont know if this is actually Wall or somebody posing as him, but here's 'his' post over on the BioWare forums;

Dear People Who Love Mass Effect -
So...maybe it's time to actually say something?

Working on the Mass Effect series was epic. It was mind-bending, soul-coughing, astral-plane traveling delicious loveliness - all the way. The games themselves are works of art. I wouldn't change one note of it that myself, Sam, David, Richard or Jimmy wrote. As you may have noticed by now, I am not returning to score the final game. The reasons are much too complicated to explain here, but suffice to say that the people at BioWare and I are still friends and we all really still like each other a lot. More importantly, the score for ME3 will be great and even more important than that, the game will liikely be (being BioWare and all) super duper fantastic.
Clint Mansell is cool. Enjoy.
Oh and thanks to everyone for the kind words here and over the years. For those of you who didn't say nice things, that's cool too. I'm still searching for the perfect chord. If you guys see it laying around, let me know, ok?
See you in another game in another crazy universe!

-Jack

I reckon Jack Wall will be involved in some capacity, as it's probably going to be a large soundtrack.

As good as Clint Mansell is, if Jack Wall isn't involved, I'll be bitterly disappointed.

What's wrong with the guy who did ME2's music?
Well, he delivered a very lackluster ME2 score so I am guessing Bioware looked around for other possibilities and Mansell was available.

He did a competent job considering they told him to go for a more orchestral approach in the sequel.

I really liked both Mass Effect scores. The second one got a bit generic-heroic fanfare-ish at points but overall it worked.

Clint Mansell, though. That's a fucking coup for Bioware right there. A coup!

Really cool news! I enjoyed Mass Effect 1 & 2's soundtracks, so I hope the vibe isn't too far off from the previous games.

He was also the creative lead/frontman of a fucking amazing band Pop Will Eat Itself from 86-94, too. He has been unbelievably awesome for at least 25 years.
How was this not on page 1? PWEI was amazing. I haven't listened to his work since the Theme From Pi, but it was an awesome track.

Here's his actual answers from the original source.

Q: Do you do much work for other outlets like computer games? Mike Patton, for example, has most recently voiced The Darkness.

CM: I’m doing a video game this year actually. Mass Effect 3. Funnily enough, talking about Mike, we’ve exchanged emails about the possibility of doing a show featuring the Quartet and people they’ve collaborated with. It’d be a Kronos show, with different rooms for other people to do their thing, then bringing it all together. It’s pretty cool-sounding.

I’m definitely interested in different outlets – that’s one of the reasons I get involved in short films. It’s not so much that I can experiment as it is to be in a situation where nobody’s looking over your shoulder. Short films are usually made by young people and they’ve got ideas I can bounce off. They can take me in a different direction.

Q: So in a game, the character might arrive at a big boss and you have to have a piece that can quickly become dramatic.

CM: That’s what I’m figuring. As I was saying about Public Enemy and re-working old hip-hop tunes for Requiem, and kind of re-working old ballet tunes for Black Swan, with something like Mass Effect you’re more like a DJ, with all these elements. You’ve got the holding pattern, then the big explosion where you need the score to kick in. Then you need to take it off on a tangent. You’ve got all these different elements that change depending on what the player does. You have to figure out an overall symphony, but be able to break it down into component parts. You can bring the pain when required.

The guy 'gets it'.

Wow. Just wow. I was already getting this day one... and now... uhm... there's no end to how much 2011 can destroy my economy.

note - i have zero inside info, just thinking about epic scifi games to come out in the 2 years that don't have an internal person doing the score and that is the only thing that popped in my mind

Holy shit, this news is awesome. I mainline Mansell on almost a daily basis.

Bioware apparently using the EA money to go all out for the arc's* conclusion.

* = Yeah, no way will ME3 be the last 'Mass Effect' game.

May be the last good Mass Effect game. I think the team will move on to something new.

If we are lucky Mass Effect is the new Assassins Creed.

Mass Effect 3 followed by ME3: Brotherhood and ME3: Sisterhood featuring Tali and gal-pals.

They did actually confirm more Mass Effect games already. I'd be fairly surprised if it wasn't the same people, especially since they now have half of Edmonton and all of Montreal on the series.

Zeschuk said during today's episode of Kotaku Talk Radio that the Mass Effect property is a "valuable universe," that the end of the futuristic trilogy does not necessarily suggest an endpoint for the series.

"We're actually going to continue to use it for stuff and we're going to continue to make games there," Zeschuk said. "Believe me, we have our work cut out for us for the next little while getting Mass Effect 3 done after this. Don't worry if you love Mass Effect, there will be more Mass Effect in the future."

Dont forget they've also got the movie deal, that inevitable train wreck.

Mass Effect was the last good ME game. ME3 has a chance to be good, but looks like it'll be a ME2 clone.

I'm glad Mansell is doing the music for ME3. Although Jack Wall did an amazing job for ME1, he really dropped the ball for ME2 (but I suspect he was forced to change by EA/Bioware). Funnily enough all I now fear is that the quality of the game will now detract the quality of the music :(.

I think that most people will get bored and a)move on to different games inside the company or 2)quit. I mean 3 games in a row...
We're talking about a company full of people who have been working on DND like high fantasy games since 1995, yet are still bragging about how they have a path mapped out for loads more Dragon Age games.

The only, and I mean quite literally the only downside of Mansell coming in is that it 100% guarantees that the great ME1 OST flavour will not return. You don't bring in top tier talent like Mansell and then tell him you want him to ape Wall's Vangelis-aping score. So this will be an entirely new beast. Bring it on!

I will buy if there are more Mass Effect games after 3, Mass Effect is too good compared to what else is out, it would be like Uncharted stopping after Uncharted 3. It could happen but would be dumb to stop.

Who was responsible for The Wards from ME1? That's the best song in the game.

Well, there were different people working on these series. ME is pretty consistent. Norman is the lead gameplay designer, Hudson produces, Karpishin supervises writing. DA2 has a different gameplay designer and it shows.

It be cool if this guy took some themes from Mass Effect 1, but I fear he is too famous and will want all new stuff.
