Clip from the Terminator 2 remaster.

Just got some info that there are efforts to bring the 3D release to Sweden.

I asked if they could focus on a 70mm copy instead.

(New 70mm projectors were installed in Sweden for Dunkirk, so it sort of makes sense...)

I wish all remasters looked as good as The Terminator remastered release.

Anyway, all of this talk has reminded me that I've been wanting to do a Blu-ray/DVD/4K UHD community thread for months now, where we can talk about different releases and help people find the best ones, show our picks up, and other such things. Thoughts?

Great idea

Agreed, would be great if the OP included player recommendations as well.
Hadn't thought about that. Yeah, that should definitely be in there. Gonna have to do some research. Also gotta look for a place to get some good 4K UHD screencaps, to have a comparison in the OP between the three formats. Caps-a-holic is great for Blu-ray and DVD shots, but they don't have any 4K shots yet (at least as far as I've seen).

If anyone wants to help with making the thread, let me know. I'm no expert on 4K stuff, as I don't own anything 4K...

What if Cameron always wanted the films to look like that but he couldn't because color grading wasn't available back then?

I feel like whether or not old films should be color graded is a matter of opinion. I don't like the color grading on Blade Runner's Final Cut, but I'll at least acknowledge that they did a good job.

Whatever is going on with the contrast and dynamic range in these pictures is something else. Any change that swallows that much detail up is way too much. A couple of those side-by-sides are on the level of that Predator Blu-ray where they blurred out all of the film grain.

But it was. It's called Color Timing and has been around since developing film was a thing.

Color Grading is more or less just a means to do it digitally, and with finer control.

That OP clip is my favourite from T2, which I actually watched again last week on blu ray.

Man the framing, slow mo, and music in that corridor scene.. beautiful.

The Fan Restoration Forum has a thread like the one on Original Trilogy about T2's color. The 35mm film scans posted there look a lot closer to the new remaster than the old Blu-ray. Even if the new version is a bit too green, it's still more accurate than the current Blu-ray. Even the Special Edition LaserDisc looks closer than the old BD.
Love love LOVE how the Special Edition LaserDisc looks. Kept an eye out for squeezed version, but never had any luck under $100! Easily one of my favorite movies on the format. I actually watched the Cameron signature edition CAV box set a few months ago and was still blown away by the picture and sound.

Asked my father over the weekend if he'd like to see the film later this month as it's one of his favorites, but he didn't seem terribly enthused.

Nah, that's his body splattering whenever he gets shot. Arnie even describes him as a mimetic poly alloy. His wounds heal just before he gets back up, bullets are just normal metal and wouldn't do that. Bearing in mind he's made from liquid metal that's the kind of effect I'd expect to see. It's like when you drop something into liquid and it 'flowers' out, for want of a better word.

This...I've always thought the effect was exactly as intended. it wasn't "cratering" so much as splashing out.

Not sure what you guys are on about. It was always clear to me that the gunshots don't penetrate at all and the metal from them bunches up on the surface as if he was bulletproof.

NO.

NO.

He's a liquid man. The bullets splash into his body. You've been watching Terminator 2 wrong. And Terminator 3 for that matter.

Cameron has a hard on for blue tint. Aliens he added more, before he digitally color corrected things the whole movie was filmed with blue lights already lol. All the Colonial Marines gear is really brown almost, yet it looks green in the movie cause of the blue lighting. The Bluray remaster cranked up the blue even further.

Maybe he brought his favorite TV back into the studio

I have it here, but I don't have any capture equipment to get a clean shot from the LD. It'd have to be off-screen photography w/ my phone.

I wonder if that's enough to capture the awfulness in all its glory. Would be interesting to see.

You can see the bars a few seconds before this shot actually. The camera lens then puts the focus on Sarah's face. This is unrelated to the remastering work.

Wrong.
You can see them all the way through the shot in the old version.

Never knew you can see Patricks balls in the scene where he sits down by the cop and takes his gun upon his arrival.

The balls have been covered up for the 4K release apparently.

You know, I wouldn't mind if their tinted Salvation in blue... That would make it look more like the original Future War.

And switch all the gunfire from the robots to lasers. And remove the transformers noises. And edit the last 30 min or so.

Then you might have a decent terminator flick.

To my knowledge, it's only showing at AMC theaters in the US this weekend. I'm not sure about the rest of the world though.

Looks like more cyan is both the director's intent and the DP's. Still not sure if this is necessarily true to the intended original theatrical color timing though. Either way, I hope the end result will still look good.

Is the bluray that's included with the 4k version a remastered version of the movie?
It should be.

Its pretty much AMC exclusive for like a week, brehs. So don't let your hopes get too down.

I saw a showing at a non-amc theatre for september 3rd in my area.

So weird that no one has nor want the distributing rights for T2 in Sweden. It's in some kind of limbo.

Which means I can't get it cleared for showing even if I a the 35mm-copy myself from the Swedish Film Institute (cheaper than I thought).

I'm always so focused on depth even before I started being a stereo film-maker.
"stereo film-maker" must be least sexy description I've heard.

"I even got Adam Greenberg, who was the director of photography, to come back and help me colour-time it. Adam is 80 now but his eye for colour is just as finely calibrated as it ever was. He said, ‘I remember we had a problem with the cyan in these shots, so we need to put more cyan...' and he was right!
Reads like a joke-quote.

I wasn't able to find shit around me for showtimes yesterday. Now, my local theater has it up for Thursday. No other showtimes yet, but obviously they'll be showing it longer than just Thursday.

Best version of T1 and T2 on Blu Ray? Does it even exist or are they all fubar to some degree?

The latest T1 edition has a new transfer supervised by Cameron and it looks great. Lacking the original mono track though. And you might have a problem with the teal push if you prefer the former home video look.

The best T2 edition will be the one soon released. But again, now with an added teal push.

Thanks for the info! Well, that doesn't make things easy lol it seems I need to get these new transfers and the old since new transfers look sharper but I like the original colours. Not to take up more of your time but what's the best versions if you want the 'original' colours and grain?

Latest T1 is 'Terminator: Remastered' from 2012?
