Clothing differences, what's the deal?

I just came back from a walk. I live in a college town with a lot of students. On evenings on the weekend, there are a lot of groups walking about on the town, going to and from places to socialize or whatever. This time, I was curious and decided to pay attention to what people were wearing and how it differed from what people wear during the week. The women I noticed were wearing clothing that revealed more of their skin; it was a noticeable difference from what I observe women wearing during the week. However, the men who I noticed were just wearing t-shirts and shorts mostly, and I didn't see any noticeable difference between weekday and weekend clothing.

So, what's the deal? Why does one group change clothing and the other doesn't? Or did I not notice something I should have? I understand that this is a probably a popular time for meeting partners, so it makes sense that the women would wear different clothing to look or feel more attractive. Why doesn't this apply to the men as well? I can't imagine that that they aren't looking to be attractive the same way that the women are.

I figure this is a good place to ask something like this and avoid the Mars/Venus responses.

You need to go through more observations of your subjects professor.

I notice a difference in what people wear during fridays and saturdays, I even "dress up" on fridays when I go to school.

Same reason men don't wear make-up maybe? They don't really care as much, and I don't think girls care as much what men are wearing versus men caring about what women are wearing.

Because women have this crazy idea in their heads that guys look at their clothes. As long as your ass looks good in the clothes, we don't give a shit!

To be honest, I hate people (which basically mean 70% at least) who wear those shitty cargo shorts or sweatpants or workout shorts with high ankle shoes. This is not high school. At least put some pants or if it's too hot then get some chino shorts.

The idea that men don't care about what women wear is silly. If a woman was wearing a baggy hoodie and sweatpants, wouldn't you perceive her differently than if she were wearing a form hugging dress? What if she was wearing a floral button up shirt with matching pants?

Self-presentation matters a lot.

No, I wouldn't perceive her differently, but I can only speak for myself

Seems to be an American thing tbh

Which one? The observation men don't seem to dress differently or that they do depending on the day of the week?

You wouldn't perceive a woman who dressed like these differently?

Jesus christ dude are you conducting field studies or going out for a walk?

???
I'm fairly certain like 99% of men do not wear make up.

Well, you're wrong on that one. Maybe you live on a farm in Texas but I can guarantee you that there are men that wear make-up; and by make-up I mean stuff like foundation. Some wear more but I've met atleast five dudes in my city (Gothenburg, Sweden) that wear foundation.

... And no, they're straight, Mr conservative.

Actually I wear my "best" clothes when I go to college. Week-end though? Anything goes.

He said that the majority of men don't wear make up, hard to disagree with this.

Yep. I've noticed that the majority of soccer players I run into (both professional and amateur players)have some form of makeup on. It's not difficult to spot either - they're not trying to hide the fact that they have it on. A lot of athletes have to do TV and public appearances (aka photo ops) so they have to look as close to their heavily photoshopped pics as possible.

I honestly think the clothing difference comes down to women just investing more time, energy, and money into their wardrobe than men.

I'm spending a few weeks in the US right now in a college town and I have been around Americans an awful lot in general. I have noticed that American guys in particular tend to dress awfully and not what I would consider appropriately for the occasion I.E drinking with friends in an evening or dinner with friends.

This is complete rubbish. Of course you would perceive someone differently. Clothes that fit poorly would hinder your perception of her whilst well-fitting clothes would do the opposite. If someone was dressed professionally, she would come across differently than if they wore sportswear or a low-cut top/short skirt.

Women dress better than men, as a general rule, because there is a lot more public pressure placed on women to maintain their appearance. Also - as an extension of this - there is more information and better products for how to do this. It is much harder to find good quality clothes for men than it is for women for example. Of course, many women (and men!) want to dress well because they enjoy doing that.

If you don't feel that men dress down for the weekend or non-working hours, you must have a job somewhere you can wear whatever you want.

I've noticed a lot of young women were a lot of booty shorts. As in I can see the bottom part of their ass cheeks. It's fantastic.

You're psychic? you can read my thoughts? How does deducing what she's doing today based on what she's wearing change my perception of her? If i know a woman who likes to sleep around, guess what, my perception of her as a easy isn't change just cuz she's buttoned up in a pants suit. Nor is my perception gonna change of the girl who doesn't sleep around, does a ton of charity work, because she shows some cleavage and leg.

It's sad that your perception of a person is defined and changes as easily and quickly as their clothes...

Men's fashion fucking sucks. Where are my summer dresses?

Is your only measure of how you perceive women how much they fuck around?

From my observations there are three problems.
1. Men don't really know anything about clothes.
2. Most men's clothing stores are awful, too expensive, or both.
3. Most men's clothes are garbage.

For instance, I went to 12 shoe stores before I found 1 pair of dress boots. Not 1 pair I liked, but actually one pair, period. Mostly it was those square shoes made of cardboard or slip on loafers. What the hell man,I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Went to 9 different stores looking for some chinos, found nothing but ugly ass khakis, jogging pants, and the worst looking slacks ever created.
Ended up just getting some levis line 8 pants.

And most dressy pants are freaking high rise pants. WTF is up with that, I don't wear my pants up around my nipples. Who designs this stuff anyway?

I guess I'll just buy jeans and a t-shirt.

Ignoring the questionable comments about 'sleeping around' and being 'easy'...

It is frankly ludicrous to suggest that someone's appearance does not affect your perception of them. You might not think so, but on subconscious levels it clearly affects your perception of them. As you get to know them it will have less of an impact, of course, but the way we judge people at first glance is shaped by appearance, much of which is affected by style of dress. This isn't even a bad thing (though it can manifest in negative ways), it helps us understand them as a person, or their current context.

If you are seriously suggesting you are 100% unaffected by these factors, please go see psychologists because you would be an excellent specimen for them to study and could produce some groundbreaking research.

How about specifics? What do you wear on Fridays and Saturdays that's different and what do you think I'm missing?

Use your words.

Pathiarchy dictates women should invest more in their looks.

But only on weekends?

So you think they would try to look more attractive if they could, but they can't due to not being able to find suitable clothing.

I can kind of see that, but it's also kind of crazy that in effect, attractive clothing for men doesn't exist on any normative way.

Is OP saying he has never seen a guy wear a suit? Or a shirt and tie? Or a guy wearing something other than sneakers?

I don't understand what's going on. You went out one night and saw guys wearing shorts and a t-shirt during the summer time just hanging out. And?

What if you saw a guy wearing this?

I guess it depends on where and how you were raised. At least for me, anyway no one really taught me anything about clothes. Then if I go somewhere to get a suit or outfit the salesmen just sell what they have and it's usually hideous or expensive or both.

I think one big problem is Americans are more obese now too. So it's though to find well fitting clothes or even clothes that flatter different body types.

Men might wear those things to work or when they're meeting someone important. But no one here really has that kind of job, everyone's a student. When people do wear suits, it's for something like a job interview. People don't wear formal clothing here to look attractive. None of that is a mystery.

What kind of confuses me is why almost all of the women change into more attractive clothing at nighttime but the men do not. I thought they did something similar and that I just wasn't noticing, but now that I'm actually paying attention I can't notice any differences at all.

Thing is, though, clothes generally have never fit well for the vast majority of people regardless of body type. Many cases generic fits come close, but not quite. Most anything we've been able to buy off the shelf can use a good tailor and imho worth the extra cost.
