Cloud Imperium compares Squadron 42 to Grand Theft Auto 6

Chris Roberts has commented on Squadron 42 in Canadian newspaper La Presse, showing how strongly he believes in his title, which he compares directly to the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (translated by Bing):

"We're hoping it'll be almost as big an event. Other than GTA 6, it's probably the biggest-budget AAA game."

A fun little reminder. They have spent 14 years working on squadron 42.. while it would be unbelievable if they managed to actually ship that game next year, please keep in mind.. it won't be the full game. Only the first of three planned episodes.

That's right. After 14 years they are proudly proclaiming that 1/3rd of their planned single player game might be of a similar quality to a completed gta 6 experience.

The audacity of this guy.

Are you serious? 3 episodes and they will release just one of them next year? That's insane.

Snake oil salesman in the business of selling as much snake oil as possible claims his snake oil is without a doubt the biggest, most amazing and most popular snake oil ever.

As SQ42 is the part that looks the most finished, i can believe that. Its on that scale as CP2077.

But 2026 it should make then.

I honestly would like to give CIG money in exchange for a copy of Squadron 42 next year.

But... I said the same thing last year. Is it actually ever going to release?

Whole thing is such a scam, I still dont have my Kickstarter physical goodie sfrom 14 fucking years ago and he is going on parading on his 5th yacht

I'm not a fan of the low hanging fruit insults on the game and can only say that this is one of my most anticipated games in a long time (S42).

Probably more than GTA6. My mind hasn't watered on Squadron 42. It's cost a mess of money but seems like it will be epic.

GTA6 is a new edition of something we've already experienced. It's safe and will be big budget but that doesn't give it a pass over something we never see in an epic fully realized game like S42. That is something people are sleeping on and giving GTA a pass since it's another high budget GTA.

Squadron 42 doesn't come around all the time and as someone who's been playing games from the early 80's on, it's one of a kind in comparison to GTA6.

Over 13 years and $800 million later and most people still have no idea what to expect from Star Citizen as a finished game. Meanwhine it seems every 12 year old on this planet knows what GTA is and what it's about...

I'm sure a superfan would try to tell you that episode 1 is the full originally promised game, and the other two are 'sequels'

But yes. There's three episodes planned, and if you purchased the game 14 years ago that only entitles you to the first episode, you'll have to buy the other two when they come out 20-30 years from now. Can't imagine they were too enthusiastic about the idea of people who spent $30 ages ago getting the full game.. what a convenient solution.

Yeah I paid for early access when I first got my PC back in 2014. Played a few hours and never really went back for much time as it's an unoptimised mess. To think that those of us that have been waiting all this time aren't going to get the full package is a bit of a piss take. Oh well.

It's on track to dethrone DNF. Congrats!
But when regular dev times today are close or over to what the first Stalker was laughed at, nothing is surprising. Some games have way too much money (and time) to burn through while probably a lot of talent never gets the needed funding. Just awesome.

I love how he trolls all his whales. You ain't releasing shit chris. Shut up and collect your whale money.

This guy is frankly delusional.

Chris Roberts, the George RR Martin of space video games.
The videos look great, but I wonder how they all get payed.

SQ42 has the most likely chance of doing so given its paired back scope and it being in a polished end-stage.

They still can't get elevators to work, then the big S42 reveal was an on rails sequence straight from 2004.
Then there's no mans sky with custom ships now and working elevators.

Do people think that anyone can make a good game?

If they want to sell me this game talk to Metacritic. Otherwise, never EVER buying anything from these people. The proof is in the pudding and I'd be surprised if they ever put out an 80+ game with > 20 reviews before the studio shuts down.

Uh no, that's not how its set up, its not episodic like some adventure game from an indie, they made 3 chapters but each are meaty games. It's a trilogy ala Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3, not The walking dead chapter 1, 2, 3. They're full fledged 40 hour games. They simply had the lore/story written up, they're the sequels. You make it sound like its 1/3rd of a game, its not.

SQ42 has the most likely chance of doing so given its paired back scope and it being in a polished end-stage.

2026 is looking very likely for the small fact that the SQ42 team is now pouring in new content into Star Citizen so they moved away from the single player game.

The 4.3 patch introduced a facility made by that team and its very distinct compared to the rest of the MMO content and is oozing atmosphere and details

It took a Destiny kind of vibe. 4.2 Storm breaker mission links to 4.3's new Onyx facility.

They still can't get elevators to work, then the big S42 reveal was an on rails sequence straight from 2004.
Then there's no mans sky with custom ships now and working elevators.

SC ships have elevators that work. The freight elevators for cargo had a bug. Elevator problems from tens of thousands of players calling hundreds of items/containers each for the huge mission that was resource drive, all 4 factions fighting for ressources to beat other nations and get a prize. Millions and millions of items going through freight elevator systems. Peoples trying to abuse the system and break other faction's abilities to make it work, etc. What took place during that period is a stress test. That really don't matter for a single player game.

I will happily buy Squadron 42 as i would buy GTA VI, they just need to release 42 finally.

Yup

It won't have GTA 6 to compete with on PC anyway and totally different genres. They do not watch to launch near GTA 6. They still see GTA6 as the biggest event of 2026, they're hoping to be 2nd. I don't see what's controversial here.

I mean... it could be, but so far they have postponed and changed release dates to much, always chasing that "tech" that will magically make the production of the rest of the game end in 2 days, but they are just not there yet.

In contrast, GTA 6 will actually release, probably with a new iteration of GTA Online as well. Meanwhile we at SC (yes, i fall for the scam) we still have server issues, poor performance and more macrotransactions.

i mean rockstar also takes a decade to release a game and justifies it with horse ball shrinkage but CIG adds sheet physics and people yell loudly.

I was quite excited when they announced SC originally. A modern WC: Privateer would slap so hard. But this has just bloated into a monster. Hope the backers get a game they can enjoy in the end.

I mean I loved Elite Dangerous. I just want something like that but with more focus on a SP experience.

Again, if OP didn't use clickbait site titles like "CIG compares SQ42 to GTA 6", and actually used the original text.

They acknowledge GTA 6 is the most anticipated game of 2026. They will launch at a point in time to not be overshadowed by GTA 6. They hope it'll be as big of an event. Again, hope. It is probably the biggest budget AAA game after GTA 6 for 2026 season for sure.

I don't see how this is worth a surejan. They respect the presence of GTA 6. Everyone in 2026 is awaiting for rockstar to stop the planet from turning for a couple of weeks.

As a fan of Chris Roberts previous works, I have no doubt that the game will be a good time but will it have mass appeal, no idea.

I already got a free copy of SQ42 for backing it and Star Citizen so early. I'll be playing it and GTA6 next year for sure.

You can publicly see all their taxes due to the company being a UK business. These kinds of statements are just idiotic.

As you say, anyone from public can go see for themselves, as per UK law

Makes for a boring read to be honest.

But peoples thinking that these are not fine-combed by thousands of bitter peoples since 2012 on a yearly basis, line by line, for any chance to throw the law at CIG and have a big story of fraud clearly are living in a world of cartoonish evils and conspiracy theories. A website would fucking jump on this feet first at any indication of a problem.

It was definitely badly managed, but how many studios ramp up from 50 dudes with a demo, to a thousand employees with multiple studio locations? You can't identify the hierarchy or team leaders with that kind of growth. Had a satellite studio working on a feature? Oooops Sony sweeps in and buys the studio, tough luck! (Firesprite). Crytek sueing you a dozen times. If it ever ends up reviewing well and has nice sales, there'll be hours upon hours of documentaries on that whole development hell.

There was definitely feature creep. There was definitely wasteful redo. There was definitely a lot of stupidity with the early release date promises. But they seem to be in a good place now. Focusing on workforce back to UK to focus on SQ42 was probably the best move.

October 11 is the direct for the conference. ~2 hours. No multi day fan expo in some theater. Hopefully dense as fuck 2 hours and 95% focused on Squadron 42 since it should be imminent.

Just shut up and release the game already.

Excited Lets Go GIF

Yes!

I remember backing a game called "squadron 42" not: "squadron 42: episode 1"

Further… I'd bet you in the far flung future when all three episodes come out, they release something called the "squadron 42 complete edition" which may imply the individual episode was.. incomplete.

Finally. After 14 years, if you're satisfied with 1/3rd of the envisioned product being out, more power to you. Personally, I'd rather see the full product released. If it takes them this long to release episode one, I can't fathom we see episode 3 in our lifetime.. or heck cloud imperium managing to stay in business long enough to see the development of all three episodes through is optimistic in my eyes.
