Cloudbuilt - Mirror's Edge meets Sonic

Reading a thread with the title 'X Meets Sonic' automatically makes me fear for the worst fanart ever. I've been on the internet too long.

I would not refer to that as Mirror's Edge in terms of aesthetics, camera, movement, nor environmental interaction. I do see the resemblance to modern Sonic games but with a more interesting art style.

Look more like Sonic meets Prince of Persia 2008.Dunno where the Mirror's Edge came from. And some of the animations look really stiff.

I really don't like the anime rocket girl art style, and that scene/shader filter stuff to produce the drawn-art-ish effect.

It also looks more like flying and dashing than running.

You have no idea. Even READING the thread title instantly put some horrible distorted Sonic fanart face my head and made me recoil. Like it was practically instinctive. :(

These were my thoughts as well. The concept is kind of cool, but between the issues mentioned above, this looks like it could be a frustrating platformer.
It is alpha footage though. Not sure what I can say, I might be under an NDA :S (I'm not a part of the dev team)

Wtf are you people smoking? This does not look anything like Mirror's Edge. "But there's platforming and wall-running", so the fuck what? So did Super Mario and Prince of Persia. Geez.

Not interested.

Not very interested at the moment, but it can only get better I guess.

It looks incredibly janky but it's still alpha so that will probably be ironed out. The artstyle should be dropped as soon as possible though, looks like a bad application of real-time hatching techniques.

Yeah I understand it's not finished, and I'm not writing it off yet, but the whole concept looks like it needs to be dealt with very smart level design and a LOT of playtesting/polishing.

Has a lot of promise and I'm interested in it, but I have to wait and see if it truly is all that worthwhile. Far too many times I've played runner games and felt disappointed by nothing actually new or unique even in feeling.

I never thought we'd reach the day when I could use the phrase "bog standard parkour platformer", but here we are.

I dunno, doesn't strike me as impressive at all in any way. At its current state it's certainly not something I'm gonna want to play. I know it's alpha and all, but I think the art is ugly as shit.

The description made it looks like Dustforce in my head .. so awesome !

While I can see where the op is going, looks more like inmomentum ... and MUCH better than that.

Looks interesting =3

Indeed :) I don't know if anyone on the team are gaf members but I sent the link to them so they are aware of the thread (or will be tomorrow).

For an early alpha build, that looked pretty promising. I'm actually kind of surprised that there are so few games that play like the modern Sonic games (platforming/racer hybrids, with an emphasis on well timed movements and speed running and levels with branching paths) and watching made me think that the game could have a similar playstyle.

Probably will be fun but I don't like the way it looks like a first person camera with a character model pasted in front of it and made to run in place. In other words, it looks like the character makes no real physical contact with the world. That bugs me.

Why do the majority of you guys hate so hard? It's pretty ridiculous... something with fairly original mechanics, a great artstyle and cool concept in its alpha state and all everyone's doing is bashing it.

You know damn well if this was Grey Shooter 46's fast-paced trailer with rock music about the new weapon attachments you'd all be going crazy drooling over the most minute detail and wriggling in your seats right now with anticipation.

What is wrong with the average gamer? Why do you expel creativity and promote stagnation? Hate on everything new because it's not what you've seen before and go crazy over the latest sequel to a trilogy of a remake... it's sad.

Because Mirrors Edge is in the title. While the game is nothing like Mirrors Edge, could of said something like Prince of Persia meets Sonic, or Mario Platforming Mixed with Sonic speed and gotten less moaning

It doesn't look bad at all. I want to see more.

Are we writing off games due to somewhat wrong descriptions now?
Come on, guys.

Bog standard parkour means wall-running and rocket-backpack-flying? Or was I misinterpreting the video?

Eh, the Sonic comparisons are apt. It's kind of different, but those aren't the compelling bits of Sonic games by any means and they aren't doing anything for me here.

To be fair, your average gamer is the kid standing in line for Skyrim spouting such gems as, "Only fags would want free Internet" (in reference to PS3) and "Dragon Age 2 was the gayest game I've ever played" while having a love affair with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (although to be fair, DA2 may actually be, in technical terms, the "gayest" game most people have played). They are a problem, but not necessarily the problem in this thread.

Here, I think it's mainly a problem with labeling - understandably, Mirror's Edge fans are a practically starving bunch given the paucity of similar games, and so any comparison drawn that is not perfectly suitable is likely to be met with some scorn. Having played ME, I can see how the article's author devised the analogy (especially if we consider that for some newer games writers, ME might be their closest analogue to such games as the one in question), but it's apparent that the mechanics are pretty different. I might have said Vanquish (for the boosting mechanic) + ME + Prince of Persia, but it all depends on where you're coming from.

Anyway, as a general fan of all the above games, I think this one looks interesting and has promise. I'm not necessarily aligned with the creators in thinking that modern games don't "trust" the player with skill sets (sometimes pacing the knowledge acquisition is a good design choice), but with some polish, they could have a solid and fun game. Interested to see what platforms it releases on.

Went in expecting more. Looks okay but doesn't look like it has any gameplay from Mirror's Edge. Take out the jetpack and it would be slightly better possibly.

And we are very well aware of it. :)

Hey, I am a designer at Coilworks. Glad you guys enjoy it. We are very excited to hear that people are looking forward to this. We can't answer to all your posts in this thread but we want you to know we are reading your comments and taking them seriously. While we appreciate the references to other platform games, we are trying to bring something unique to you guys.

One of us wrote a message on her tumblr page about the response we've been getting since our reveal. Hope that answers some of the questions you guys have about our game. :)

Edit: To those who were asking about platform, we are releasing it for the PC.

Darn it, they didn't mention which platform they'll release it. I certainly hope it won't be for tablets because I wouldn't want to play this game using touch controls.

The ground the character covered with the boost was so great that misjudging distances is going to be a real problem when I play this. "The next platform is 3 miles in the distance? Sure, I can probably make that."

Thread title trolls Mirror's Edge and Sonic.

At best, from the trailer, the gameplay looks like modern shitty Sonic. Not real 2D Sonic. and I'm not seeing the Mirror's Edge aside from some cell shading.

Uhhh, the game doesn't look even remotely smooth to me.

The animation is very poor, the camera work is janky, and the game lacks fluidity. I'm always up for more games with this kind of platforming, but they have a long way to go.

My thoughts exactly, looks like janky third person spectator cam from quake 3.

Not a fan of the artstyle either, typical indie stuff really...

The artstyle is fantastic - I think people have a problem with the animation in that the character stays pretty still while flying fast. Still...alpha...

Looks great to me, would love a vita version of course though :)

Came for Mirror's Edge.

Left since it's some third person rocket booster bounching on walls thing.

I'm sorry, regardless of ME's esoteric DLC pack, this seems nothing like ME at all. The Sonic (3D) comparassion I do see though.

I was able to get a hands on with Cloudbuilt. I had no idea what the game was about. I had never even heard of it. After playing it, I can say I'd love to get my hands on the final release. Here is my video impressions I was able to take. Releasing late March I was told.
