Cloverfield video game connection? ( spoilers abound)

Out of curiosity, do you play FPS games?

There is a difference between playing FPS and watching someone play FPS (Atleast to me).

When you play FPS, you become the player.
When you are watching someone play FPS, there are 3 levels:

1. Playing the way you're suppose to play: fun to watch.
2. Playing like a noob and running around: annoying and slight strain to the eye.
3. Playing like a jerk and spinning around all the time: "WTFISTHISSHIT! CAN YOU STOP DOING THAT!?? IF YOU CAN'T THEN EITHER TURN IT OFF OR I'M LEAVING!"

Cloverfield was a mix of all the 3 levels.

1. The movie is a FPS with out the shooting. The movement is from level to level and the entire movie is just one perspective where you rarely see the person behind the camera. There a a clear separation between levels ( scenes) and there are enemy encounters at the end of each level . In addition the script for this movie could easily have been a FPS like half life where you only know as much as gordon freeman and nothing more.

No.

2. The monster is Sin from FFX with the head of one of the monsters from resistance. Granted the resistance monster is some kind of arachnid thing, when you look at both Cloverfield and resistance monster side by side they look VERY similar.

Now you're just reaching. Have you even seen the movie?

3. The monster had Sin Spawn which behaved in a similar way.

Like what, smaller monsters trying to eat people? Seen in countless(like ALIEN) other movies but yeah, I see the connections already.

JJ Abrams said he got the idea for the movie while in Japan and saw the merchandise there. I wonder what other influences there are other than the obvious Godzilla.

Probably stuff like the movies Blair Witch, Alien, and other monsters. I seriously doubt he said "Gee, I should make a movie based on Sin from FFX but slap on a Chimera head".

The cameraman's name is HUD. Heads Up Display, yo.

Or Hudson which is a common nickname for people with that name.

Oh and in before the thread: "Insomniac: we're even extremely flattered by is Cloverfiled, with their multiple "eyeball" heads; we did multiple "eyeball" heads in Fall of man".

i thought it looks like Resistance monster.

anyway, according to EGM. JJ Abram's has game and it's not Lost. so Cloverfield or startrek

This man's got it right. I think it's stretching it to say that Cloverfield was influenced by video games.

NO, NO, NO. I will personally letterbomb anyone who tries to ruin Cloverfield by making a game out of it.

I would just like to notify you that this post has been forwarded to the FBI. An investigation will take place starting tomorrow, do NOT leave the country.

But seriously, I think Cloverfield would make a terrible video game. I mean, it could be done... but I doubt it would be done well.

I wrote a little on this subject here.

I really do think games were a big influence on this movie.

And I swear there's a radio sound towards the end that is identical to the squawk that the Combine soldiers make in Half-Life 2.

Just read that piece you did. So, the relationship between Hud and Marlena reminded you Half Life 2: Episode 2? You don't seriously mean Cloverfield was influenced by a game that just came a few months ago. Yeah, it reminded you of the game, but it wasn't influenced by it.

As for the rest of Half-Life 2, there may be some parallels/coincidences, but going as far as to say Half-Life influenced Cloverfield's narrative style... nope, I don't buy it.

WHAT?

One of the games he mentions most in the piece is Half-Life 2 so I'm assuming that's one of the games he thinks influenced the movie. And I'm saying just because he was reminded of the game doesn't necessarily mean the film was influenced by it.

Yeah, maybe I didn't word it so greatly.

I can't believe Hollywood beat gaming to Cloverfield.

First-person story about a giant monster attacking the city, smaller monsters to flee from and several set-pieces. This should have been done back in the PS2 era. Has there even been a game about a solitary giant monster attacking a city, that isn't a Godzilla based beat-em-up?

EDF and that game about the giant woman come to my mind.

you actually thought its a coincidence that he was named Hudson for the movie? The coincidence theory works for "Rob = the only character that ROB the electronic store" thing but not so for Hud.

Not a FPS, but Alone in the dark says hi.

Also, to the OP, the first description my brother gave me of the monster was "Something straight out of Resistance."

Alone in the Dark can be played through in first person mode as well.

- Monster reminded me of chimera from Resistance (especially the head, but also the way some limbs have that boney Chimera look)
- The whole thing was indeed like a FP action game, that was in my head almost all the time watching the movie. I know there are other movies that were told from first person, but so many scenes/conventions from Cloverfield had me thinking of similar scenes in various FPS games.

I have to get this off my chest for once and for all:

The monster from Cloverfield looks absolutely nothing alike Sin. Nothing at all.

Some more-

-Cloverfield has a camera, videogames do too
-Cloverfield has people, most videogames do (except for furry games)
-Cloverfield sounds cool and so does Bioshock
-Cloverfield has special effects and so do video gaimes

I kind of got the feeling that Cloverfield had more of a "videogame" style pacing to it rather than a traditional movie pace. The movie was broken up into nice little chunks where the characters visited different environments and encountered different situations they were required to overcome. I actually look at the movie like more of an amusement park ride than just a film.

It's funny that other people are starting to pick up on that though. About halfway through the movie I was thinking... "(Left 4 Dead - Zombies) + Cloverfield Monster = Awesome."

God, I loved that movie. Just saw it this past weeked. Loved the style. Camera shook a little more than I was hoping for, but didn't prevent me from enjoying it one bit. Awesome stuff. So, just for clarification...
Lily made it out on the first helicopter transport, right?
Didn't get why Rob said,
'Everyone is gone/dead' or something like that when he and Beth were under the bridge.
Does anybody think that Rob and Beth made it out alive? Afterall, the camera was retrieved.
Oh yeah, was there anything after the credits? My brothers, friends, and I didn't stay. Don't want to miss anything. :D

By the way the movie was a total rip of Resistance. Not really, but still the resemblance was uncanny. Makes me wish all the more for a Resistance movie.

A lack of any background plot reminded me of a lot of games. It was pretty much, "this is what we have to do to meet these goals and survive. Watch the horrible and emotional things we go through".

That's the kind of story I like. I don't care for the background politics blabber. In this movie, we know only what matters.

"Leaked" concept art of the monster was basically a Sin clone, and most people who haven't seen the movie are saying it is just like Sin, but if you saw the movie, the monster looks nothing like Sin. Anyone read the manga yet?
I'm getting the vibe Mr. Cloverfield monster may be the result of a crazy, angry Japanese high-school boy's fantasies brought to life, aka Haruhi Suzumiya rip-off. And the "thing" that crashes into the ocean at the end...and the message at the end of the movie saying "It's Still Alive!". It's sequel time.

Edit: Basch, read my spoilers. I answer some your question.

You're right, the influence there might not be direct. Cloverfield was shooting as late as August and Half Life 2 Episode 2 came out in October. But Alyx was around and sufficiently awesome in Episode 1.

I didn't even notice
the thing dropping into the ocean during that last scene
. I think a sequel would be awesome. :D

The thing dropping into the ocean isn't explained..yet
. Comic-Con 08 hopefully he'll be there to talk about the film and his upcoming Trek film.

No, it's explained by some satellite or a part of the satellite dropping into water. It was one of the events that somehow triggered the awakening of the monster. It was explained in the internet viral marketing campaign as far as I've read.

Some people are confused. The final scene being discussed
happen prior to the monster's attack. Hud is filming over the Coney Island footage of Rob and Beth and the last shot is the final moments captured on film that day. If that is a monster striking the water, then it's the same one that gets nuked in Central Park.

Matt Reeves said in an interview that it explains WHY the monster comes ashore - the "thing" that fell from the sky apparently disrupted its natural habitat and that the monster was only a "baby" and it is feeling "anxiety" as a result, goes to the surface and is all angry and stuff. It does not, however, "create" the monster - the manga explains how Cloverfield is "made" or something (part 4 will, only part 1 is available now - but leaks on Japanese sites who reviewed the entire piece said it explains the events leading up to the movie).

EDF Cloverfield would be awesome. All the guys following you around would all be like:

There's more to the movie if you stayed til the end of the credits. Which could suggest there could be a part 2. Although if they do, they need to hand out barf bags because that's nearly what I did watching shaky cam...
