Clear winner in motion and low light is the HTC ONE, Everything else leans to the G4.

Final assessment

Josh and I both agree that the HTC One's camera is the weakest of the three. Its color reproduction is cooler and adds a blue cast to shades. It also overexposes more shots and conveys the least amount of detail. However, the One's low-light performance was pretty good, and in many instances, we'd be happy using a picture from the One in casual photo-sharing situations.

When it comes to the out-and-out winner, the tussle between the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4 grows murkier. In well-lit photos, the choice for the "better" camera is a coin toss. The iPhone's slight underexposure captures the most detail across a scene, but the GS4 camera produced a lot of the photos we liked best.

Let's be honest, does anyone outside of advertisers ACTUALLY care about the finer points of comparison between smarthphone cameras. As long as they're serviceable they're perfect. If I want advanced optics, I'll go grab my DSLR.

I've never heard anyone criticize a phone over it's camera, it seems like such a non-factor to me.

It's something for techies and blogs to bitch about. Your average person doesn't care how many pixels on the photo of their kid's birthday cake they are posting on Facebook.

Same. Why would anyone take a picture with a shitty phone camera?

"Hurr durr, the best camera is the one you have with you."
If you give a shit, you'll have an actual camera with you.

...... Who carries an actual camera around with them all the time? If you want to take pictures sometimes you want one that has decent pics... its not rocket science. People want things that are good...

Low light performance is certainly an issue.

My girlfriend has about 30 cameras and always has like 3 or 4 on her.

That makes one out of 7 billion. I guess you proved the point.

The point being that the pictures she takes are worth looking at because the proper tool was used for the job.

Look at the pictures in the OP. How are any of these even acceptable to your eyes?

G4: Can't see shit.
One: Blurry and blue.
iPhone 5: Noise out the ass.

Where's the Lumia in this shootout?

Or is this one of those things where everyone knows the winner, but insist on fighting for second place?

Compared to not having a photo cause you dont have a camera... why wouldnt you want one thats the best it can be given the circumstances? Thats like saying audio quality doesnt count cause you can buy a 58304 speaker system at home.

Because they want to take pictures of themselves, family, and friends, and would rather use the camera they already have that does a good enough job than spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on a DSLR that is way overkill for the kind of photos they want?

It's like why asking people buy cheap headphones when they could spend $500 on a pair of Sennheiser over-ears.

Because "no photo or camera phone photo" is not a choice I have to make.
My choice is "no photo or camera phone photo or real camera photo".

These phones cost far more than a cheapo point-and-shoot digital camera that will produce better pictures.

Some people must always have their DSLR on them and all their lenses at all times. Must be cumbersome and heavy to have to lug it everywhere with you 24/7.

I sure don't. I've never heard my mom complain about the pictures I post on facebook.

'I don't want to see my grandson unless you take a picture with a DSLR.'

Seriously, she needed my help to figure out her username and password. I live 800 miles away. The G4 has a 13 MP camera. I don't need a poster. Why is that even needed? Did I miss something? Is it just because it has a small lens that it comes out blurry or is it image stabilization? Serious question because I don't know.

Holy fuck you people are weird.

I ordered the G4 today because of the positive reviews that the camera received over the One.

So I guess I'm their target?

I also own a DSLR camera with a decent lens arsenal.

But I don't lug around my $1000+ kit with me every god damned place I go.

This is pretty elementary stuff.

'I don't want to see my grandson unless you take a picture with a DSLR.'

I get that all the time. Grammy Nikon is such a cunt.

people asking "who takes pictures with shitty phone cameras?" are completely missing the point. photography is my main hobby and a big part of my work, i own several very expensive cameras and lenses, and yet the camera is super important to me on any phone. i upload lots of pictures to instagram, twitter, facebook and so on, and there's no way to do so from a "real" camera that isn't a pain in the ass. why wouldn't i want those pictures to look as good as possible?

also, photo apps on iOS at least are awesome and offer something no proper camera can.

cheap digital compacts are the truly questionable cameras in 2013, not phones.

Do they include a wifi card on those $500 bad boys? Or blutooth?

Plenty of digital cameras have Wi-Fi and editing tools.

Hell, there's even an SD card with built-in Wi-Fi.

Or a camera that runs Android for all your favorite apps.

Are you really trying to argue that a good deal of people don't use their cell phones as the primary means of taking photographs? Please.

I find the obsession with phone camera comparisons to be ridiculous. All high end phones have good cameras that should never replace even an entry level digital camera.

Knock Knock. Who is there?

Most people dont want to fill thier pockets constantly with everything they 'may' need. A phone serves many purposes, hell most people dont wear watches anymore cause their phone fills that service too. But they also want their quality to be decent. So they chose phones based on what they do. If people take alot of photos with their phone, they want to choose one primarily around that.

Again, you seem to be arguing for no reason other than 'lol phone cameras!' which is idiotic.

I guess you dont game on anything other than a high end pc, dont game on mobile or hand helds or consoles, dont listen to anything other then a super dope dolby thx sound system at home..... etc.... Dont drive anything but the most expensive car...

Everyone and their cats know that proper cameras are better. Thats not the point is it? Jesus, some of you are so snobbish the royal family would think you out of touch. Is it that you 'cant' understand, or just dont want to cause it makes you feel special.

i own an eye-fi card — it's impossibly slow and janky. would use in an emergency but not otherwise.

and the galaxy camera is barely any better than a smartphone!

i wrote about this very subject a while back. camera makers are dropping the ball by limiting their connectivity features to terrible cameras, or implementing it in a hugely inconvenient way. no-one's got it right yet, and it's really no wonder that people are using their iphones instead of point-and-shoots — it actually offers a better experience for the way most people enjoy photography in 2013. http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/31/3936048/communication-breakdown

using DSLRs on instagram misses the point of the service anyway. it's about sharing spontaneous moments — phones enable those photographs. the medium is the message.

HTC really screwed up. They should have blown it out of the water with a megapixel count that low. What happened?

I pack a Sony RX100 whenever I have a bag on me. It's small enough to be a no-brainer, and it takes AMAZING photos for something that small.

I got my RX100 last week... loving this thing! Utterly destroys all my previous point and shoot cameras for raw detail and clarity.
