CoD: Modern Warfare 2 or Assassin's Creed 2? (XBox360)

Really, I can only buy one! Lack of both time and money. And it's not an easy decision to make.

MW was a favourite of mine back in 2008. I played it constantly for several months, got the extra maps, then a month later finally lost interest. I've been looking forward to the sequel ever since it was announced. The problem, I guess, would be that I'd probably get pretty addicted to the online play. I'd want to compete and that'd mean investing some time in to get the perks, etc.... and then naturally getting hooked. The online component is not really pick up and play, is it? In the sense that if you only devote a bit of time each day to it, you'd continually get your ass kicked.

I've never played Assassin's Creed, not even for a moment. But it's exactly my kind of game and I heard the sequel resolves a lot of the issues from the first. Stealth, medieval setting, adventure aspects, complete world, sneaking across roof tops, etc. Sounds amazing. But could I just beat it in a rental? Is it a game that I'd definitely beat more than once?

At first I was DEFINITELY going to buy MW2 and now I'm feeling like it's a game I should avoid given how addicted I was to the first. AC2 seems like an excellent adventure game and one that I can put down much more easily.

Thoughts?

So the best way for you to decide what game is right for your personal tastes...

is to get each games fanboys to fight it out for your amusement and the noble purpose of impressing their preferences upon yourself?

Just. Make. A. Choice.

FPS or Adventure? Shooter or Stabber?

Good game #1 or Good game #2?

Why would there be a competition between games that are nothing alike and available on all platforms? I don't think the Gaming forum is necessarily that silly and can't offer me some insight.

Anyway, I'm just looking for something to push me either way since I can't make up my mind. This thread may not help. So be it. It's worth trying.

For me, to reiterate, it's more about ADDICTIVE GAME vs. PICK UP AND PLAY ADVENTURE. I thought some people might discuss that or say otherwise.

I see it as Excellent game #1 or Excellent game #2, which makes the choice much more difficult.

It sounds like you're in the mood for Assassin Creed 2 so go with that. If you do go with MW2 I think the spec ops mode will satisfy your desire to play the game more leisurely.

My concern is just that, you've listed two well-regarded games, so the choice really boils down to which style you want to play.

In this thread, people will just yell out their favourite of the two, and in the end you'll still make your own mind.

EDIT - unless you are going to definitely play which one has the most votes? In which case, fair enough.

Both are epic. Really tough choice.

The online in mw means more gameplay and since you can only afford one, this means you can play this one for longer.

Yeah, I've heard a bit about Spec ops. People that are less experienced can get into it OK?

What do you think about renting AC2?

Mama, I appreciate your impassioned reply. But why don't you realize that I didn't just go, simply:

CALL OF DUTY OR ASSASSIN'S CREED? WHICH IS BETTER? FIGHT!

But instead discussed the tension in my mind and was anticipating that some people will read it and respond appropriately. You're asking me to basically treat this forum like a fucking caretaker's pen and tread carefully. We're really fucking stupid here, Socreges! Don't make any attempt at rational discussion for our prevalent hysteria risks shit-flinging! Oh well.

I'm aware that people, like Domino Theory above, will just shout out one or the other. I'll just ignore those replies. I don't give a shit. They can say what they want. Posts like KAOS' are what matter.

Someone told me that it's more difficult online. That people are more committed and so being on the top half of the board, for example, or surviving more than a 20 seconds without dying, is extremely tough. True?

My fear is that I'd then commit ridiculous hours to the game so that I could get to the point where I'd have some success, hours that will take away from other shit I should be doing in my life.

True, your OP is more detailed and thoughtful than many of a similar nature. If my reply came across as dismissive of this, my apologies.

I think I just get frustrated when I see two different, distinct games in seperate genres being compared and contrasted. To me it seems to be comparing grain and granite. Both are awesome, but your needs and preferences should and will be the ultimate decider. With one person arguing how awesome Grain is, and the other spelling the virtues of Granite, it all still boils down to which one you prefer.

That wasn't my intention, and I don't see that in my posts. GAF are a smart bunch, most of the time, but I don't understand how we can argue one different game over the other, when the only common factor is they're both very well regarded.

The genre doesn't help for my purposes. I don't prefer one or the other. I want to experience both.

I take your point, but understand that I'm not saying which is better?, but which should I buy, with consideration to what I've said?

GET ACII. Excellent reviews all round and very positive impressions from GAF all round. But MW2? It's fucking shit.

The SP is okay (only good missions are the TF141 missions), co-op is great (if you can get someone to play with you), but the multiplayer is probably one of the most atrocious multiplayer experiences I have experienced.

Laggy, unbalanced, full of glitches, full of campers and full of noobtubing twats. The map design is absolutely fucking awful too.

So do yourself a favour by NOT buying MW2. The only reason I got it is because of the extremely cheap price @ £21.

COD4 is a better game to be frank.

Okay I accept the distiction. But reading through your OP:

You enjoyed MW1 to a degree where you considered it an addiction and seem certain you'd enjoy MW2. Your major concern seems to be how much time it will take up.

You are excited about AC2, and seemed enamoured by its context/style. Your major concern is that it may be too short/lack replayability.

It seems to me, you're deciding if you want a short, concentrated experience, or a long, developing experience. Grain or Granite then? Still your choice though.

I haven't played ACII yet but MW2 is fucking great.

The singleplayer was fun, spec ops was better then the sp and the multiplayer was the best part!

Maps are much better than cod4, weapons are more fun, killstreaks are great... I haven't really experienced any problems with lag or glitched on the PS3 version... easier then Cod4 in my opinion, because my k/d in cod4 was 1.1 and in MW2 its 1.5 :D

I can see me playing it for a long time. Judging from the fact that you can't spend the money on a lot of games, I think you should get MW2, just because there is so much more replayability.

It's a much better game than Cod4, to be frank.

i did not like mw2 that much

the story lacked any plausibility... it was just a bunch of cool set pieces stringed together...

the multiplayer is probably just as good as the previous version... i never played any modern warfare multiplayer

assassins creed 2 was okay i guess if you liked the first one.. i personally thought that it was a little bit dissapointing especially since the story is taking place in two cities... the other two cities are just thrown in with very few instances to visit them story wise..

This is true for me in terms of single player and special ops, but I definitely prefer the first Modern Warfare in terms of multiplayer. Way too many frustrating aspects to MW2. Akimbo shotguns, heart beat sensor, etc, etc.

Well, it's not so easily nuanced in my mind right now. That's why I was hoping for people to help me develop the grain and granite so that I could more easily choose. And things like this make it more difficult:

Judging from the fact that you can't spend the money on a lot of games, I think you should get MW2, just because there is so much more replayability.
versus
How much spare time do you have on your hands these days? A lot = MW2, not so much = AC2.
For me, these are the two sides to the same coin. Not to mention that I have a lot of free time NOW, but won't come January. Yet I probably won't be buying another game for a while.

How long does it normally take to beat AC2?

Right now I'm thinking I'll rent AC2 and try and beat it over the holidays, and then buy MW2, while hoping I can restrain myself.

They are so different I should think the choice would be pretty obvious unless you like FPS and third person open-world action games equally.

AC2 - very fun, a bit too long but such a great improvement on the first I didn't mind
MW2 - very disappointing single player mainly due to a straight up bad story poorly told, redeemed by godly MP. Almost impossible to get offline as so freaking many of my friends are playing it just when a group of us are almost done another few come online and it all starts up again.

Having absolutely loved Modern Warfare (Gold Cross 55), and having put over 8 days into the sequel...

Get Assassin's Creed 2.

If you're like me (and you sound like you are) the multiplayer will absolutely demolish any temptation to play other games, and you will just be hooked in for the grind from the moment you pick it up until you finally burn out. Get AC2 now, play it, enjoy the rest of your games, and when you get some more cash, then get MW2. I promise the community will still be there, and if you played CoD4 alot, this one will come naturally enough once you get used to the maps. But it can wait a month or two.

Thanks, Calder and pyke.

Sounds like AC2's campaign is beatable in a rental if you storm through the main parts, but takes a week or two if you want to enjoy it thoroughly. Shit.

MW 2's spec ops is fairly easy to get into. It's basically portions of the single player campaign set up as missions that you can play by yourself or in co-op. AC 2 is a long game with planned DLC so maybe you would rather own it than rent it.

I got both. MW2 is a game with a weak singleplayer and a great multiplayer, and AC2 is the best open-world game i've ever played. Pretty lengthy, long game, too.

I'd grab AC2, personally, but MW2 is obviously a fantastic game.
