The rebranding will take place from next month. Nope, Codemasters Racing is a new label inside the company.
UPDATE: Codemasters has been in touch to clarify its Codemasters Racing announcement.

Codemasters remains the name of the company. Codemasters Racing is a new label, which launches alongside DiRT Showdown, and will be the home of Codies' racing brands: DiRT, F1 and GRID.

Codemasters is no more: meet Codemasters Racing.

The publisher has announced it will rebrand itself from May - and is now only developing racing games. Codemasters Racing is now hard at work on games in the popular F1, GRID and DiRT series.

What does this mean for the Operation Flashpoint and Bodycount series'? Codemasters told Eurogamer today it has no intention to continue with them.

"The focus is an exclusive one, there are no other genre properties in development at this time; racing is everything. We are also increasing headcount across the operation, which currently employs around 700. We are expanding the teams by a further 100+ development positions, which are opening over the course of the year across the sites."

To accompany the re-naming of the independent British developer, Codemasters has also announced a free community portal that will bring all of its racing titles together beneath one social umbrella.

Titled Race Net, the browser-based service will provide gamers with a single driver profile that will unify accomplishments achieved across all Codemasters Racing games.

After Bodycount cratered we knew this was coming, but I'm a little amazed that they actually renamed the whole company.

Outside of racing, I can only really point to Overlord as a franchise of theirs that I enjoyed. Hopefully the IP either reverts to Triumph or they find another publishing partner for a similar kind of game.

oh my God...

Wish this would mean I'd have a chance of a simulation game again like reviving the TOCA series or something.

Now that they have their priority sorted out, they should put something together to rival both Gran Turismo and Forza. I'd be excited to see what they could produce.

Another TOCA would be huge too.

Now more irrelevant than ever!

Seriously, why would you pigeonhole your company like that?

EDIT: Label, huh? You need more than one for that argument to qualify.

Considering the quality of games like Operation Flashpoint: Red River and Bodycount, this is for the best.

You don't often see publishers making smart moves, but this definitely qualifies.

The big publishers have pretty much abandoned the market Codemasters serves. Focus on that 100 percent (especially since everything else you do is incredibly niche and a waste of corporate resources). Very smart move.

EDIT: Or not. Figures. Made too much sense for such a niche publisher to just focus on the one thing they do well.

Operation Flashpoint :'(

If it helps, Codemasters no longer owns the first game anymore. Cold War Crisis is now owned by the original developers, and was re-released last year as ArmA: Cold War Assault.

If you liked the original OFP, play the ArmA games. They're the same.

I always thought they are a going to become like THQ sooner or later; I am not worried anymore.

(I guess the name change part is mostly to deliver a clear message, which will also be good for marketing and promotional)

edit: just saw the label part, lol

The fact that people liked the idea of Codemasters going racing only speaks volumes. It's really all that I think about when I think of the Codemasters brand anyways.

IF THEY...

...find a way to resurrect the TOCA franchise in the veins of legendary TOCA Race Driver 3 game..

AND IF THEY...

...find a way to obtain WRC licence and finally do some good with the heritage of the Colin series..

AND IF THEY...

...have enough money to start working on the next-gen platforms TODAY so they can actually achieve 60fps performance on consoles with the engine instead of current 30fps crygame..

AND IF THEY..

... get rid of the Demonware for the matchmaking/online support..

AND IF THEY...

...go back to the very, very roots that made them FAMOUS...

Than I am so damn happy with this decision.

Well, for them its actually a smart move. They never really made any good games that wasn't a racing game.

while i agree 60fps is *almost* a must for the racing genre, your statement makes it sound like their current-gen console engine is lacking when in fact it is capable of making easily among the best looking racers on the systems.

but yeah, make next-gen 60 again.

This is actually good news, as far as I'm concerned. Racing is the one thing Codemasters really does well... and they do it really, really damn well.

Not going to happen i'm afraid.

They've found broad success with their revamped racing games so they wont be returning to their roots unfortunately.
Although, we might see a 'sim' style spinoff in the future...

Was just going to pop in here to clarify the re-branding and what it means, but looks like I've been beaten to it :)
Helios, GRID 2...nao....
and fix the handling while you're at it..

codemasters make rather good racing games (with some I dislike) and all their other efforts have never done very well, so smart move.
