Codemasters Rebranded As Codemasters Racing; To Make Racing Games Only.

Nice. Now let Bohemia buy Operation Flashpoint back so it can die a good death.

Bohemia doesn't give a shit about the name. They got the rights to sell Op Flashpoint 1 back and they relabeled it ARMA: Cold War Assault.

There is no reason for them to go back to OF when ARMA can stand on it's own just fine.

...have enough money to start working on the next-gen platforms TODAY so they can actually achieve 60fps performance on consoles with the engine instead of current 30fps crygame...

I'm fine with the 30fps framerate if it means the visuals stay as nice as they currently are.

Same.

Although I'm PC centric. So I'd prefer all the power be used in other areas and then let the PC overhead take care of getting those superior assets running at 60fps:)

This should have happened years ago. All Codemasters games have been horrible and quite likely bombs for the company, but their racers are ace.

I don't seriously think they should try to buy it back--just one of those "retire with the team you started with" things.

I still need to buy CWA.

Except that, 60fps is to me part of the visual make up, Forza 4 and Burnout Revenge on 360 are better looking games in my eyes because they run at 60fps. That being said I can tolerate 30fps games (I'm currently hooked on Wipeout 2048)

There haven't been a lot of Destruction Derby games released, despite the advances in physics and damage technology. I'm really looking forward to this Dirt Showdown.

Now more irrelevant than ever!

Seriously, why would you pigeonhole your company like that?

EDIT: Label, huh? You need more than one for that argument to qualify.
Yeah, the holders of the official F1 License, and makers of some of the best, and most popular racers on the market. Yeah, completely irrelevant.

Wasn't it Codies who came up with the slick UI we see in so many games today?
Well they were the first I saw to put things like your stats in the load screen, that was awesome. Also Dirt was the first game I remember seeing your friend's times after you beat any given race which was a precursor to autolog.

While I think that focusing on racing is a good move the rebrand isn't. What happens in 5 years when they want to try a different type of game? Rebrand again?

A smart move as it plays to the company's strengths and also makes it easier for another company to come in and swoop them up wholesale.

Do WB Games have any racing titles in development?

*cough*

I seriously doubt that Codemasters as we know it, Racing or otherwise, will be with us in 5 years.

Seems to unnecessarily pigeonhole them, doesn't it?

If you're running a business in an industry where there's little profit, and you do one thing better than everyone else (including companies many times your size), it seems like the only intelligent thing to do. You're not beating the behemoths at their own game. But this is your market and you own it. It's foolish not to build your little empire around that.

Really? Why? I'd be suprised if they weren't to be honest, they've been around for 10+ years, there's no reason to think they won't be around in another 10.

I agree. But on thing that strikes me about this is just how many titles will this new slimmer Codemasters be releasing a year?

One or two disc based titles a year? The annual F1 game and whatever Dirt or GRID game they put out presumably alternating between the two every other year? Maybe a few iOS titles from their library like Chucky Egg?

If they can survive on such a small output of product then awesome. But I can't help but feel this is all a ploy to make them a more attractive purchase and Codemasters Racing could be a brand that 'lives on' within a larger corporate entity.

Though they have had success with the racing genre they have been floundering for years. I suppose they could survive as a smaller, 'boutique' developer and just self publish in the UK and Europe (?).

Why not get one of the ArmA games and download Cold War Rearmed? It's a mod that remakes the OFP campaigns made by Bohemia in either ArmA I or ArmA II.

Here's a video of the remake for ArmA II, if you're interested.

Good. Their shooters were subpar. I was surprised to hear about a name change but then not surprised when that turned out to be false. You never want to limit your brand in the eyes of consumer. Who knows what direction they'll go or what games they'll make in a few years time?

If it helps, Codemasters no longer owns the first game anymore. Cold War Crisis is now owned by the original developers, and was re-released last year as ArmA: Cold War Assault.

If you liked the original OFP, play the ArmA games. They're the same.

All the games Codemasters did on their own were terrible. Nothing of value was lost.

The Flashpoint games were a unique property on consoles. Not great mind you, but a decent unique experience none the less.

Flashpoint series you will be missed :'(

This is sad news. I absolutely adore Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising and am still playing it. For some odd reason I never tried the sequel, though I reckon someday I'll get to it.

I trying to find a fuck to give, I really am.

Seriously though, they pigeonholed themselves a while ago. Might as well just run with it.

(operation flashpoint is shit nowadays, i've never even heard of bodycount)

Put those 100 new employees on a new Micro Machines game à la V3, please.
Reviewers would just complain about the camera. And I think the OG MM guys left to form SuperSonic Software. They make competent top down racers but V3 and MM64 are still peerless. They had more features and tracks than even most AAA racers made today.

The racing genre in general is in decline, and I don't think all of the blame falls on the gamers.
