Codename: S.T.E.A.M. gameplay on Nintendo Treehouse stream

This. I went from "Best thing ever" to "Meh" to "Day 1" in less than a day.

My roller coaster was similar. "That sounds neat, but strategy games don't get me excited." > "Oh, that doesn't look great at all" > "Wow, this is pretty neat, i'll definitely be picking this up!"

Steam-as-a-resource is really cool. What other games do this, where foregoing an attack means you can cover more distance? Also, I like that you can attack more than once if you have enough steam. Very nice.

I also like how gaining elevation gives you a better view of the battlefield and lets you see enemy movement.

This looks really nice, but as a lefty I'm kinda worried about the controls. I can't target precisely with a stylus in my right hand. :(

That won't be a problem with this game.

My hype was sky high from the descriptions they were giving out last night. When screenshots started to show up I felt pretty disappointed but was still interested, this stream is doing a good job of restoring my hype.

thank you! that's the game I've been trying to remember since the they showed the first Kirbyesque images

Oh! Yes, I didn't even think of this, but that was a really Kirby-inspired game for sure. Hopefully this game can evoke similar vibes (haven't seen the vid yet).

That's actually a pretty classic WRPG flexible "action point" system, and one that I'm glad to see here.

Art still looks terrible but the gameplay is really interesting. Back that behind Intelligent systems wonders and we've got ourselves a solid game.

Wish it looked better though.

Not loving this. Reminds me of Future Tactics. If they were going for a Silver Age comics look, then they failed. All of the ugly geometric stylizations to the characters that they'd probably try to say were Mignola infleunces actually just make it look more like a licensed game for an early 2000s American cartoon like Jackie Chan Adventures or The Batman. And that font they're using for the menus is Art Deco (probably ITC Anna from the look of it) which is heavily associated with the 1920s, not the days of Lincoln. Also, I don't think they realize the "America - Fuck yeah!" thing comes off as kind of insulting when attempted to by non-Americans.

The visual aesthetics are REALLY not in my favor. However, I love Valkyria Chronicles style gameplay.

Cognitive Dissonance awayyyyy

Looked horrible in screenshots. Looks much better in motion. However, the game's artstyle still leaves a lot to be desired. Gameplay looks excellent, and that's what matters.

Somewhat ugly (well compared to AW anything is a disappointment) but looks fun. I loved Sakura Wars 5 which is the closest to this I've played, this seems to have quite a few extra elements building on that.

Looks absolutely fantastic! My main hope is that they add the option to use the Circle Pad Pro instead of a stylus/touch screen for camera movement.

I feel so stupid. I thought Codename: STEAM was, literally, the codename for this game and a title wasnt yet finalized.

Need more coffee.

I don't like the art style, hate steampunk but gameplay seems good.

I wanted a new Advance Wars.

I feel your pain, at this point I just pretend any new IS game is Advance Wars. I bought a 3DS with hopes that there will be a new AW, but at this point I'm hopeless - unless TGS brings us something new.

I'm not watching the stream, but that risk-reward thing sounds a lot like Bravely Default

I think I'm in the camp that the character designs are too gaudy and the weapons are fugly. But the environments and enemies look good. Mainly the actual play and mechanics look great. It also seems to run really well for a full polygon game on 3DS. Good textures, etc.

Looks a lot better in motion, that's for sure.

Can't listen to audio while at work, but I'm guessing the nub stick thing in the center of the touch screen moves the camera?

The last AW game sold... what? 50K worldwide? Honestly wouldn't expect to see that series again.
