I'm going to laugh when only about 1,000 people show up. Over the past year liberals have been nothing but talk so I doubt they will show up in big numbers

I don't really keep up with politics so I can't really confirm nor deny your statement, but I'd wager that fair bit of redditors will show up. What with them being the ones to help get this thing started and all.

So many angry gaffers. Theymad.

Seriously, though, why does this sting? It's like me being pissed that a comedy troupe is doing a free outdoor concert downtown.

It says something for how poignant their comedy is or how comical the "real" news is at being poignant.

I do honestly wonder about this. These "liberals" you speak of typically don't think the country is going to Biblical hell, and aren't salivating for the chance to grab their guns to over-throw the government, so they aren't as motived to get together at a big rally held by a couple of idiots who lead them in a rally cry about how oppressed they ("they" being the white majority) are.

I could totally see this thing having nowhere near the crowd as the Beck and whatnot events, and that side will have a field day should that happen.

You really want a genuine political rally from an erstwhile comedy team?

I don't know if I consider it to be a genuine political rally, but I do think that there's a valid point in the idea that the rhetoric is rather extreme and polarizing. Whether or not the people who arrange the rally happen to work as comedians or politicians doesn't matter to me as long as the ideas and debates are sound.

You win. I like your excuse the best if indeed only a thousand people show up.

I think the point when they move from comedians who happen to discuss politics to facilitators of "debate" in a public political rally, they have jumped any and every possible shark.

I like where these people's heads are.

Any more ideas for sign slogans for this thing?

Saw the two announcements really late this morning on the Comedy Network replays and was so giddy with excitement, I hope it'll be a big success. Wish I could go.

I don't know if I think saying that they just happen to discuss politics is fair. Maybe that was the starting point of the show -- I don't know -- but now it comes off as rather focused on it with a clear intention, even though it might be coated in a nice shade of comedy. Everything about The Daily Show is current politics, from the stories they cover to the guests they bring in (well, maybe not Ben Affleck). The point I'm trying to make is that I believe they're genuinely interested in covering politics even if it's through comedy.

Considering I don't know what the content of the rally will be (are there gonna be debates and guests or just straight up speaking?) I'm gonna try and not comment on whether it's jumping the shark. All I know is that I've seen quite a few interviews on The Daily Show that struck me as quite interesting and to me Stewart has always seemed to be a rather reasonable and intelligent guy.

Shit, maybe I should fly over that weekend for my birthday. Perhaps I can ask stay with my aunt's place in the area who's a Tea Party advocate as well. :lol

Why?

Some of the most important points of political discourse have come from satire.

It will be fun, but this thing won't reach Beck/Fox News status. The reason why so many people were informed about the MLK day rally is because not only was it advertised and talked about daily on Fox News, but also talked about for a month straight on CNN and MSNBC, as well as local news stations.

I don't quite understand your venom here. You want dour serious debates on issues? You could listen to NPR I guess.

Stewart is truly a gifted interviewer. Why is that hard to believe? I don't get my news from The Daily Show, but I don't see anything wrong with forming opinions around the more serious interviews he's done.

What is your problem? How anyone can be against a call to tone down the hyperbole is beyond me.

Out of curiosity, what do you consider serious news?

I don't think that they picked a good date.
I would imagine the majority of their target audience is going to have Halloween parties on that day.

You're probably right. However, as Stewart explained last night, during that particular week they will be broadcasting their shows from Washington, so it simply lined up in that way.

If a total hatemongering, Republican-biased, theocratic buffoon like Glenn Beck can hold a "political" rally, I don't see a problem when a smart, non-partisan, intelligent and witty comedian does the same. Its as if Jon Stewart's profession automatically excludes him from holding rallies. Some of the best political comentators have been satirists. In fact, the very profession of being a political satirist is to point out social and political wrongs using irony and sarcasm.

Man, so many bitter con tears in this thread. :lol :lol :lol

There's some good ones over at Metafilter.

ACTUALLY TAXES ARE THE LOWEST SINCE TRUMAN. SERIOUSLY

I DON'T HATE OBAMA BECAUSE HE'S BLACK. ACTUALLY I FORGET WHY. HE IS BLACK THOUGH

I understand why they chose that date.
The only thing I'm saying is that while I have no idea how many people they can actually get there, I believe the number would have been significantly higher had they done it a week later.

And considering that you just know that the media is going to focus on the numbers and only on the numbers, that's regrettable.

American politics is so odd.. such a huge advanced country but the balance of liberal/conservative is so close.. yet the liberal TV people are such disgustingly smug, arrogant arseholes that its hard to like a single one.

Yeah I personally think its not a good date either. It falls on Halloween and is couple of days from Nov 2 elections. I preferred 10.10.10. It just flowed well. But the date is set and wheels are turning. Parents must sacrifice little timmy's trick or treat this year, otherwise the terrorists have won.

Not to mention that Glenn Beck did the same thing that Jon Stewart is doing - funny political satire - for years on the radio before he went full retard.

Perhaps, I don't think the numbers will be a concern, tbh. It's more than a month away, with that lead-up time, plenty of people will find a way to attend. And if it doesn't beat the fanatical numbers from that Beck Rally, that's fine, it's not an exact competition.

More seriously, as much I love the idea, depending on the tone of these marches/events, I can already see the opposition castigating this as too jokey about the very real problems in this country.

Balance of what? There's no real balance here. There's a center/center-right party and then there's the GOP.

I don't know if I had gone, I'm still not sure how I feel about the whole thing, but I know I can't go on that date.
Anecdotal?
Sure.
But I also think it's indicative.
Halloween had become a HUGE holiday in recent years, especially for the Stewart/Colbert's demographics.

Do you really doubt that this would be painted as a competition?
Fuck, the whole point of this rally is to show that there's a big rational majority in this country, if only very few people come, well, that undermine the message.

No, you're definitely right, such is the nature of our beloved news media in this country. But despite the date, there's more than a month of lead-up time, and I'm honestly not that worried that there will be a dearth of people showing up.

Stick to English politics.

:lol

What do all of you enthusiasts hope to get out of this "rally"?

Debate? Dialog? Awareness?
No fucking chance.

Comedy?
Yes. (Personally I would say "no fucking chance", but this point is subjective.)

Anyone expecting anything other than a few lulz will be sorely disappointed.

Ain't that the truth. What makes it worse though is that there followers are oblivious to it.
