Colin McRae: DiRT 2 announced - Screens

pretty sorry "interview" but i guess the game was just announced so i'll go easy on em...

i had hoped the series would drop most of the other crap (ie, everything not rally, hillclimb, or rally cross) but that doesnt seem to be the case.

still waiting for agreat team to make a truly kick ass pure rally experience on the current gen machines. warthog? dice? evolution studios? turn 10? someone please.

Didn't Codemasters make a Wii engine because they were making a racing sim for Wii?
Firebrand created a Wii engine. A Wii version of their proprietary Octane engine, the one that powers Trackmania DS. It's supposedly as impressive on Wii as it is on DS. I don't know if Firebrand will do the Wii and DS versions of DiRT 2, though...

Cant wait. I loved DiRT... The physics didn't bother me at all (They were game breaking in GRiD IMO). I just hope they don't ''GRiDify'' this like the bullshots are suggesting. :(

If Firebrand is handling the DS/Wii versions it'll at least look ace. No accounting for the rest of the game being any good and that goes for all platforms. Please change it CM and don't bloom us to death.

does not compute

but seriously, i will still play this. i may not enjoy it but i still like to try all racing games

Unlockable coffin car plz.

I actually thought DiRT was a quality racer once you looked past all the pandering to the US audience. I'm content with rally trails through stodgy bogs and coniferous forests, none of these big mutha trucks and excitable co-drivers.

Isnt it universally* agreed that Grid is the best looking race game out on consoles? So isnt there just a slight chance that this will be the best looking rally game out?

(*non system warriors concensus)

Also FUCK the McRae haters Colin was a legend...

San Fran street track looks freaking amazing. The replay mode at times was astonishing.

Oh hell yeah!!!! Been waiting on this!!!

The interface in the first game kinda looks like NXE if you now noticed it .

Looks to me JUST From these renders that they are aiming more towards arcade some more....which to me is just fine, i miss my Rallisport Challenge, although Revo is a decent arcade rally game..i really REALLY miss RSC 1 and 2

Just read the news!

!!!! HOT FUCKING BURNING PASSION !!!!

If GT5 doesn't end up having damage, my $60 will be going towards this.
But this is out in 2009. I think you'll be able to scrounge up 60$ in a year's time.

Awesome news, was just wondering about a Dirt sequel yesterday. Glad to see they'll keep Colin McRae's name in the title.

Seriously, me too. DICE needs to get back to making a racing game some day.

Freakin' awesome. DiRT is my favourite racing game this gen even if you cut out everything except the rallying (which I do).

Yes! And hopefully GRID 2 after that.

.... Since I haven't been around here that much in recent times, did you folks like that one?

GAF in general? No. :(

I'd like to see Dirt2 have some multiplayer racing that's not all ghost time trials. It may not be 100% real in rally racing rules but it's fun!

4 car races in V-rally 2 and rallisport come to mind.

The "visual targets" for the images are placed all over the press announcement, so it's exactly not like they tried to hide the fact.

PR:
Codemasters® today announced that Colin McRae: DiRT™2, the sequel to the acclaimed best-selling off-road racer of 2007, is now in development at Codemasters Studios for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft® and Games For Windows® LIVE with further editions for Wii™, Nintendo DS™ and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system due for simultaneous release in 2009.

The announcement marks confirmation that the game will be headlined by Colin McRae, honouring the life of the rally legend. Colin McRae, who consulted on the series for over ten years, tragically died in a helicopter accident in September 2007. The decision to continue the famous series bearing his name was made jointly between the McRae family and Codemasters.

“Colin McRae was all about the speed, the excitement and the entertainment of rally driving. Even when we first worked with him over ten years ago, he captured a freedom and a spirit that enthralled rally fans.” said Gavin Raeburn, senior executive producer at Codemasters Studios. “Later his showmanship shone through in events such as the X-games, the Dakar Rally and the Race of Champions. He could do things with a car that no one else would and that’s where we’re taking the series with new events at the extreme edge of rally and autosport. It will be a great tribute to an incredible champion.”

Colin McRae: DiRT 2 will feature a roster of contemporary off-road events, taking players to the most diverse and challenging real-world environments. This World Tour will have players competing in aggressive multi-car and intense solo races at extraordinary new locations, from canyon racing and jungle trails to city stadium-based events.

“Rally has attracted new stars and a new style that makes it more vibrant and exciting than ever before; it’s right up there as a premium extreme sport, attracting fresh crowds and a new confident attitude,” said Raeburn.

“Colin McRae: DiRT 2 mirrors this new, exciting direction and, in a way, we’ll be throwing off some of the shackles and constraints that real-world rallying has to abide by. We’re pitching players against the most spectacular and dangerous environments in the real world.”

To be powered by the third generation of the EGO™ Engine’s award-winning racing game technology, Colin McRae: DiRT 2 will benefit from tuned-up car-handling physics system and new damage engine effects. It will also showcase a spectacular new level of visual fidelity, with cars and tracks twice as detailed as those seen in Race Driver: GRID.

Colin McRae: DiRT 2’s garage will house a best-in-class collection of officially licensed rally cars and off-road vehicles, specifically selected to deliver aggressive and fast paced racing. Covering seven vehicle classes, players will be given the keys to powerful vehicles right from the off. In Colin McRae: DiRT 2 the opening drive is the Group N Subaru; essentially making the ultimate car from the original game the starting point in the sequel and the rides just get even more impressive.

In addition to the World Tour, Colin McRae: DiRT 2 will come complete with full online functionality that will be core to the overall experience, with head-to-head competitive online play and new social features to engage the racing community. Prepare for mud, gravel, dust and dirt too in Colin McRae: DiRT 2, coming 2009. Sign up for the drive of your life at www.codemasters.com/dirt2.

Can we from now on just put bullshots by default in any title that involes Codemasters?
Don't blame Codemasters. The files they gave to the press are clearly named "target_visuals_*", so newssites should specify it.

Hi there,

I'm the community manager over at Codies for all of our boxed titles.

Just wanted to clear up any uncertaintanty over the screens and confirm that they are target visuals. However if you compare the target visuals for the original DiRT and GRID with the actual in-game visuals, you can see we got quite close to what we originally released!

Oh and that image with the power station is taken from the “Battersea Battle” of London, where rallycross night races are staged in and around Battersea’s disused power station.

Even if those are obviously bullshots/target renders i don't doubt codemasters will deliver one of the best looking racers around, again.
Graphics are the last thing i would worry about, in fact.

I can't wait to see what's being produced down in Bizarre's underground factory, though

It would have helped if newsbots at least kept the filenames intact, so people would know they were clearly marked as target renders.

as long as the breaking is the same, and you dont have local hotseat, its a pass for me.

Dirt was a serious downstep from Colin 03, 04 and 05

Hi, welcome. Is there already a target release date?

A couple more questions if you can answer them:
- How many internal racing development teams Cody has? There is another team working on the F1 game and probably another in the sequel of GRID, right? (Fuel is outsourced)
- The leftovers from Sega Racing Studio is now a internal team or they were spread over other teams? I am sure they should be up to something, right?

Exactly. DiRT and GRID are both great looking titles, and this is the third go-around with this engine. I think people just want to pretend being clever by saying bullshots a lot. Darn, I just did it.

I liked it, if a #2 ever gets made hopefully it has more content.
