How is that a safety?

he broke the tackle and kept going. If he had broken it for 20 yards you think Tressel would be asking for it to go back to the 1? Refs are way too giving with the forward progress anyway.

Yeah, the fact he "broke" the tackle and then tried to do something else was his undoing.

Crazy that the tipped ball still got to him.

people are saying he should have gone down and he should have, but there was no whistle, so going down in the EZ would look awful and might be a safety anyway.

it shouldn't have mattered. his forward progress had stopped and he never regained it.

bad call.

and damn, Arkansas is gonna get some points here.

what does this mean?

He did go forward, just a bit, but that's all that matters. He regained momentum for a brief second and fucked everything up.

He didn't even go forward, he just didn't fall down immediately after being pushed back 4 yards. That seems like a bad call.
This type of call happens all the time with kickoff fumbles. Runner gets pushed backwards, someone rips the ball out, and it's a fumble.

no, they are not. pushing people back 5-10 yards back, especially with multiple guys is fucking stupid and can lead to tons of injuries. it should be discouraged, as much as possible.
3 yards turned into 5-10 yard? :lol

same. i get why some might think it was the right call, but dude pushed him back 4 yards into the endzone and then fell down. i don't think it should've been a safety.

Maybe, but he should've known he was out of the endzone and had forward progress. Would've been overturned had that been ruled a safety. Of course, when you're getting hit by multiple defenders, it might be hard to make great decisions all the time.

It would've been placed at the 2 in that case.

These officials have let both lines play all game, but they've been alright on calls.

considering there were 3 red jerseys closing, the whistle should have been blown. it's not like he was going to evade 3 tacklers with no momentum in the fucking ENDZONE.

it was a bad call, period. any ref team worth their salt would have blown the whistle when he was half way down with 0 momentum in the endzone.

So if he broke that tackle and did not fall down and ran for a 100 yard touchdown would you still consider stopping him on forward progress?

It wasn't likely he would have evaded them, but refs don't make calls on the potential that his forward momentum would stop. He could've broken it for a touchdown.

edit: dammit! beaten!

That's what I mean, in those instances its fine to call it, but I see too often where refs are quick to call forward progress or give runners an extra yard or two for fucking up and getting tackled backwards.
