College Football Thread - "Whoa, Nellie"

No, I'm a Northern VA native who just ended up at Alabama.

I haven't been back to visit in awhile but I love it down there.

Nice. We are in the Atlanta area now, but still lots of family in Alabama.

Spent some time in Alexandria a few years ago. Beautiful up there

Mateer looks good but Oklahoma's o-line couldn't push a small car down a hill.

Getting out rushed by Illinois State is gross.

I think we're gonna fucked up again this year :messenger_loudly_crying:

I moved out of NoVA over a decade ago. It was already nothing like the place where I grew up, and the writing was on the wall that it was only going to get worse.

I'm just over the border in WV now.

Seeing lots of folks calling for Kalen DeBoer's head after the loss to FSU. What do you think? CrimsonTide CrimsonTide want your take as well.

I don't see it happening with a $70 million buyout. Also, think folks have to come to the understanding that we are in a post-Nick Saban era at Alabama. No one is going to measure up. This is like the post-Bear Bryant years all over again.

Yeah, but at least we had Gene Stallings who did OK, minus the NCAA sanctions. We were in the middle of those when I was at U of A. Actually, I got to see Gene's last two seasons at the school.

I don't see DeBoer going anywhere this season unless we suffer another humiliating defeat early on.

Losing to Wisconsin or Vandy might be the final nail in the coffin.

Ray Perkins and Bill Curry before Gene Stallings. Stallings was a great coach. The NCAA stuff back then is kind of hilarious when I think about it today and the millions being paid to players.

Agree on DeBoer. There would have to be a massive meltdown for Bama to fire him at this point. The fans have their pitchforks ready though.

The problem with DeBoer is that he doesn't seem to inspire respect from his team. I recall the clip last year of a player rolling his eyes as the coach is trying to yell at him near the sidelines, and that sort of captures how he seems to me in general.

When the main problem of the team seems to be lack of focus, preparation, and toughness, because they keep making fundamental mistakes and failing tackles that should have been drilled in them until they border on PTSD... you know the coach is too soft.

Whoever in Bama's leadership thought DeBoer would be a good idea because he's a nice guy with his players missed the mark completely. Saban was effective because he commanded their respect, and it always looked no one wanted to disappoint him on a single play even if 3 possessions ahead in a game. He had that effect.

It's Alabama. So yeah, the bar is next level high.

What I'll say is, if we get that soft. Plain. Vanilla team ALL year. Lose 5-6 games.

The buy out won't matter. He will be gone.

With that said, we were missing our best offensive and defensive player. So it was unfortunate.

Also, I've said it since last year. Ryan Williams is vastly overrated. He can't CATCH the ball. Sure if you lob it to him in wide open spaces, his speed is electric.

But it's Bernard #5 who is WR1.

The lack of discipline is what bothers me. 2-3 times we extended their drives by having penalties AFTER THE PLAY. Which is the "look at me" type penalties. Not a hustle penalty.

Our players are busy counting money, painting their fingernails. Buying cars. Doing commercials. Podcasts. Doing everything except getting ready to play football.

Extremely frustrating to see.

The worst of the NIL era.

In a better world, players who are busy cultivating a celebrity image for themselves should be dumped and sent back wherever they came from. I'd support a rule that if you get cut from your team for any kind of misbehavior or even just a failure to stick to the team culture, you can't rejoin any college football team, you're just out permanently... go have fun being a celebrity now at mcdonalds in your home town.

Ryan Williams is a good example of this. His head was way too big, all the eye black nonsense etc, and it made him a worse player overnight. Keep the ghetto shit out of college sports.

It has more to do with the bar being set by Nick Saban than it being Alabama.

I think the buyout absolutely matters. $70 million is more than Auburn's last five buyouts combined. I'm not saying it can't happen, but as Paul Finebaum pointed out today, Alabama doesn't have money like Texas A&M.

Agree on the discipline issue. Discipline is probably the single most defining characteristic of Saban's teams. Most coaches are not able to instill it like he was.

A lot of people wanted fsu head coach fired last season. But he just beat bama.

True. Another huge buyout though. Transfer portal can do wonders for teams that need to replenish talent. The thing is Bama is already loaded.

Well yes. But bama has earned a generation of suffering. They way they treat people let that fanbase suffer.

Never forget a bama fan stuck his penis on a passed out lsu fan. He went to prison for it. But that is what bama fans our like.

Any player who does an "after the play" penalty gets benched 1 quarter. 2nd offense a half. 3rd a full game.

These divas need to learn that those aren't acceptable.

We will see what happens. But I'm hanging onto hope we can fix things between now and end up September against UGA

No one expects Kalen to be a GOAT. But you're not even competing at times. We are way too talented to trot out that nonsense onto the field. We're not physical on defense in the least. Which was apparently our strong suit this year

Get players healthy and let's see what happens. But if we just get ran outta the stadium by UGA, the hot seat gets hotter.

Maybe we don't have A&M money. But our year revenue alone is top 5. No way the powers that be allow us to be "Shula" era again. No excuses.

Also to anyone thinking I'm overreacting to saying Ryan Williams can't catch

He's had 1 touchdown in past 7 games

Not 1 game over 100 yards since last year against UGA

The man simply drops anything that comes his way.

The catches he does make are spectacular.

Yeah, but its the boosters who pay those massive buyouts. The ADs are like "look...if you want to get rid of him so bad then you pay the buyout".

What do you think about Ty Simpson?

23-43. 2 TD's. 243 yards. 0 INT

Some questionable decisions at times. Overall not awful. Also had a few dropped passes by guys as I've mentioned.

Maybe he's the answer. Maybe not. He certainly lacks field awareness and down and distance. But doesn't make game ending mistakes so far. He played ok. Not great. Not awful. O-line needs to step up and block as well. We def lack that mobility aspect. But we will see

Pretty much agree. I think he is fine. He may not win the game for you, but probably won't lose it. That's not a bad characteristic for a QB. Think the larger concern is the running game. Less than a hundred yards. Was expecting more from that o-line

Yet first drive we drove down and bled 7-8 minutes off the clock. Kinda abandoned it after that lol 😂

Jam miller missing is extremely hurtful. Once he's back, it'll be better. The ship can be righted here. I'm not abandoning it yet. Way too early. Lots of season to go. FSU isn't even a conference game. Just learn. Put it behind you. Let's get some players back healthy that missed that game. And see where we can go.

maybe he's trying to hard for highlights instead of stats

I saw him make a (failed) one-handed attempt in that game for a short ball in the middle with plenty of room to use both hands
EXACTLY

He's a "look AT ME" kid with too much money and wanting instagram fame. Bro just catch it with both hands like a normal human.

I get it, but wasn't long ago when Bama had running backs five deep and the team never seemed to miss a beat. Now you are starting to sound like Auburn. :messenger_sunglasses:

lol 😂 hey it's all I got For now.

I'm GENUINELY curious if these players have the sack…. To lace em up and fight after this.

Some quotes from Kalen today

"Yeah, what the guys need to do is cut it loose," DeBoer said. "They just need to go play. Block out outside noise, whatever that is, enjoy and love the game and play it the way it's meant to be played."

That, DeBoer said, was his message to the players Sunday after another road loss to an underdog in his Alabama tenure.

"Don't overthink this," DeBoer said. "Just go out there and ball out. They know what they're doing, they need to trust and believe in their training, trust and believe in the reps and all the things, walkthroughs, all that they've done, all the work they've put in, and go out and reap the rewards from it. Go have fun doing it."

DeBoer wants his players to do what they love and enjoy it.

"Play with an edge too, right?" DeBoer said. "We've got something to prove. There's obviously a piece of it where this weekend we fell short of what we feel like we're capable of doing, what our potential is. So go out there and prove it, too. But don't put added pressure on yourself, have fun, get it done

Waaaay too much "have fun" and "ball out" in there, forget this guy.

Fun is what you have retroactively when you get to the end of a game (or season) and look back at how it played out. It's not what you're aiming for in the moment, certainly not under Saban.

Yeah. Saban never said that. That's for sure. lol 😂

I do get his overall message though.
