College student gets restraining order against overprotective parents

Her parents were doing that to make sure she wasn't taking guys to her bed. It's invasive and fucked up.

That's not as fucked up as taking out a restraining order on the two people that provided the money for her to be at the college in the first place.. I Wonder how she will get the rest of the money though

They don't own her. I worry about what you think is appropriate for even parents to do.

Did you go to college? Did you have friends? Did you ever go out to talk to girls, or party?

Did you even read the part in the article highlighted in red?

A job? Or a loan? Plenty of people get through school without parental help.

And given that a restraining order against your parents is an extraordinary step, I'm assuming she tried to reason with them first, including offering to pay her own way if they'd just leave her the hell alone.

Helicopter parents are bad enough--my sister regularly gets calls or emails from parents of her uni students wanting to ask about their grades and such, and quite rightly tells them to fuck off--but this is a whole other level. Watching her sleep? I mean, holy fuck.

$66,000 they've already paid toward her education.

I wounder what kind of debt she has with the feds, 66K for a job field that has little to no growth. Do people not think about this before they rack up the student debt?

I did read the bold and nothing was stopping her from saying no to them.. What could they have possibly done to punish her? And she claims her parents have been diagnosed with co-dependency disorder which to me seems like concocted bullshit

I personally know girls 18+ that have it a lot worse.. Curfews, can't go to an out of state college, no dorms etc..

Oh man you know people who have it worse. Maybe they should consider telling their parents to fuck off too.

I can see where the girl is coming from. She has the potential to make a lot of money in show business and her parents definitely will want a cut, and with the squeaky clean disney images desired today, her parents definitely want her to stay out of trouble.

Why do people keep bringing up the money they paid for her education. She didn't force them to, it was their choice to pay for her. Just like most parents do.

As for your main point, if they have already paid 66k, then she should have no debt. 66k in loans is another story. I know by the time I graduate e my parents would have paid 90k straight out of pocket.

Yeah education is expensive in America.

When I saw the thread title, I immediately thought "What the hell..."

Reading the article, it sounds like it was a good idea, especially if she had her folks watching her sleep.

Apart from harsh curfews, those are normal financial demands that parents may have for their kids. What she is going through is completely insane. Watching her sleep on Skype, the fuck?

If they are paying her way they have a right to keep track of her.

As far as education being expensive, not so sure about that. I got a BSN and only 30k in the hole. Some seems to me a lot of the people that rack up the student debt are going for things that are not worth the debt they are taking on. Lot of these kids pass on the coast of living right into the loan.

Same kinda people OWS was mostly made up off. Mad at the man cause there 100k debt for a degree in Parapsychology is not paying the bills.

Yeah, my parents keep track of me too. They ask how my studies are going and how I'm doing. They don't stare at me through webcam while I sleep.

Her parents don't own her. She is an adult. They decided to pay for her which is their own choice. They could have stopped any time, so holding the "we paid for her" over her head is kind of weak don't you think?

As for you getting a nursing degree in 30k, that's actually pretty cheap. I'm sure you got aid and what not? A lot of people (including me) don't qualify for need based financial aid. I do agree with the viability of the degree being low in terms of future job prospects....but that's another discussion.

As if what they've done already wasn't enough proof of their terrible parenting skills, instead of seeing the restraining order as a wake-up call to how they've fucked up, they choose instead to try and sabotage their daughter's education. Classy.

Heard about this. Her parents sound absolutely insane.

They also accused their daughter of promiscuity, doing drugs, and having mental issues to the point where they were considering going to court to order that she get treatment.

Odd that this bothers them so much, that sounds like a normal college student to me. No reason to get treatment.

You must not keep up with the news much.

This thread reminds me of that commercial I keep seeing about being able to monitor your home & kids via a tablet. I just laugh knowing that people like that will never feel secure (like the commercial claims).

The hell they have. A parents should be providing for their kids education without any strings attached. That´s what parents do. It´s not conditional love. You do what i want and you get what you want. The parents are trying to control their daughter´s life. That´s not normal parents acts.

66K? Woah! One reason I won't go to school, what's the point of getting a degree when you'll just be basically spending the rest of your life paying it off? I may not make too much but at least I don't have debt.

She really wants to go out and bang that bad, eh?

unless you are joking, a lot of parents end up destroying their kids mentally and emotionally, some of them or most of them never get over it in their late adult lives, leading to a lot of broken relationships etc.

I hope you never have kids

No they don't. I don't know what bizzaro world you're living in but jesus christ get a grip.

Out of curiosity, how old are you guys?

You must not keep up with the news much.

If your talking cable news then your right, its 90 bias bullshit. Also my degree is hardly a year old, girl friend is at the same place getting the same degree, she is paying about the same I did.

Oh god, terrible post, pretty much every sentence.

And no, they don't have the right to do what they were doing. Even the judge didn't think so. Your idea that being kind or giving something to someone entitles you to something back is extremely troubling.

Well, it's how wall street works, unfortunately :/

Shareholders dump some money into a company and suddenly they think they should be managers.

Being a shareholder does entitle you to something. Voting rights and a claim on assets.

Though I'm not sure this has anything to do with the issue of overly controlling parents.

Preacher's Daughter Syndrome.

She'll be pregnant in 6 months. Tops. Tattoos in less than 12.

Good job, mom and dad!

Math doesn't work out. No tattoo artist is going to work on a pregnant chick. Unless...she knows some that would, then we should be worried, because those are some sketchy dudes, and her parents are right. Is that what you're saying?

Wow, your degree which is less than a year old cost the same as a degree within the same year.

Given such a wide range of data points I am forced to concede the point.

Giving someone something is one thing. Giving someone 60k is another. As as far as tracking software on the phone? Are we just talking about family tracker that is baked in? I would assume the mom and dad paid that bill too.

Also all you guys are taking this on her word. I for one don't. I would go on to guess she was making some over exaggerations.

My point was that there is no reason to have to pay 60k for a degree in theater.

[/B]If they are paying her way they have a right to keep track of her.

They could have a right to keep track of her grades so they can stop paying if the student is just there to constantly fail classes and waste money.

They don't have a right to basically live inside her dorm room digitally. Making someone sleep with Skype on so they can be monitored overnight? Installed monitoring software on all electronics? Yeah, no. She's 21. Fuck off with that shit.

How bad does a family life have to be to reach this point?

Although, since her parents were picking up the tab I can understand them wanting to have some say in things.

That's not as fucked up as taking out a restraining order on the two people that provided the money for her to be at the college in the first place.. I Wonder how she will get the rest of the money though

just because they are paying for your school doesn't mean they get to watch you sleep and basically accuse their daughter who was getting good grades and doing well in her career path a drug addicted mentally incapacitated three dick in mouth slut. there are limits to what parents can say and do.

Once again this is what she says. Sounds too sensational to be 100% truth.
