So GAF, I'm freakin out. I'm two days away until I get scoped. At the beginning of the year (2013) I got very sick. The sickest I've been i more than half my life. And it hit me out of nowhere. One moment, I'm having a great day, the next, my head is stuck in a garbage can. (Food poisoning?)

Ever since then, my health, and my weight have been on a steady decline. I feel like crap most days, and I've lost about 45 pounds since January (involuntarily)... I've done a lot of blood tests, too, trying to find what the issue may be.

Thyroid.......no
Liver............no
Pancreas.....no
Celiac..........no
Parasite.......no

The then my doctor suggested that I see the GI specialist to further review. It didn't take her long to suggest I get a Colonoscopy/EGD... And frankly, I'm pretty worked up about it.

I hear the prep that you have to go through is literally a pain in the ass, and that you have to get knocked out, or drugged during the procedure.... Well, I think I can handle having the shits for the night (PLAYSTATION VITA, YESSS), as long as it doesn't make me sick.

But's it the drugs that are freaking me out the most. I've never been put out for anything. I'm not one that likes being under the influence of anything. Not even oral surgery... Novocaine works just fine for me.

Help me, GAF... I need courage :(

Shit - I've had so many EGD's in my life so far (over 10). They're nothing. You won't remember a thing, they'll knock your ass out cold. Don't worry.

Same for the colonoscopy, but I will say you'll shit your ass pretty raw in prep for it. That's the most unpleasant part.

It's not tough. From my experience the nurse tells you some things to do during the procedure and then you pass out pretty quickly anyway. Depends on the exact procedures needed though. The IV should be nothing compared to whatever you've already gone through.

The worst part for me is always just afterwards. The moment I feel ready to go is the moment nausea hits and anything my stomach was holding back comes out.

It's totally fine. You'll drink fluids until you crap water, and then they'll have you lie down on the table, you'll lie there for about 5 minutes and suddenly you'll have woken up from the colonoscopy.

I had one of these a few years ago.

The worst part is drinking the nasty stuff that makes you crap.

They lay you on a table, knock you out, and you wake up what seems like seconds later.

No biggie.

Don't worry, the prep is much worse than the drugs ;p. No but seriously, it shouldn't even be heavy anesthesia and you wake up fine. Also I get really sensitive to nausea especially if someone mentions it could be a side effect, never have gotten nauseous from anesthesia/surgery let alone throw up from it.

brother in law just had a colonoscopy as he is also having some severe stomach issues. he's lost a bunch of weight and has had to go to the emergency rooms a couple of times. he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. you might have colitis as well op.

It's gotta be something... I never really have any pain, though.. Only pain I ever have is in the upper right quadrant (Liver, Pancreas, Gall Bladder, etc) be we tested and even did an ultrasound. Nothing...

Isn't colitis painful?

haven't really talked with my brother in law about it as i don't get the chance to see him often. he's pretty much felt like crap for months and has had to take some antibiotics as well.

Not the same exact thing but I have crohn's disease and when I was first diagnosed I had some stomach pain, nothing too bad and it was fairly infrequent and once they nailed the medication down I haven't had any pain. Same with erm, irregular bowel movements. I am and seemingly always will be extremely skinny though, and I was expected to be really short too but had an unusual spurt in high school. But you seem to be already past that stage so no worries.

btw op is it mainly your stomach that is giving you problems? have you tried taking prilosec or prevacid? last year i had the worst stomach problem and i started taking prevacid and the problems went away. some days my stomach will get upset but i'll take some antacids and that usually calms it down.

Not a big deal. They inject you, then put on a mask and ask you to count backwards from ten. 10...9...8...7...Hey, why am I now in a different room, oh it's over, well that was a lot of stress over nothing.

Hoping for the best for you too.

Yeah, I was on Omeprazole ever since october 2012. I had stopped it thinking maybe it was the medicine that was doing it. I never picked it back up afterward. I do have acid reflux, but it hasn't been that bad this year, because I don't eat shit food anymore I stopped drinking all but 20oz of caffeine in a day, and I cook all fresh foods now mostly. The doctor originally thought that my change of diet was the issue, but the weight loss was so rapid, that he finally said that it couldn't be it.

Thank you. I know i'm freaking out over nothing. I just hate sailing in uncharted territory if you know what I mean.

You don't need courage. You don't do anything.

You just sit there and they put you to sleep and the next conscious thought you have is when you're awake and it's all over.

After the procedure?

Yeah, when you wake up hours later. You start off groggy, then feel energetic, then your arms feel prickly, then bam, nausea, vomit, and an hour later you're ready to go. Depends how strongly you react to anesthetic wearing off, though. Most nurses will want you to get dressed and get out ASAP but the moment you look a little shaky they put you back on the gurney. Worst case, they'll re-apply an IV and give you a few more hours of rest.

Totally recommend that if you're sitting up and feeling good to go, take 15 minutes first.

Edit: and I totally agree with the other posters. My first time, I had to ask a nurse if the procedure actually happened. It's not like falling to sleep - your brain just stops recording.

Prep is the worst. The stuff they make you drink is awful and your ass will turn into a Super Soaker for the night. The actual procedure is nothing, you lay down, you wake up, you're drowsy but done. I feel perfectly fine an hour after.

They also have little handheld enemas that do the same thing as the drink, they clear your bowels right out, you use them yourself, but I only ever had to use those before a surgery. That was interesting. I realized I didn't even know where my asshole was. I couldn't find the right angle or pressure to get that thing in my ass, and when I did, it was a shock.

The sedation for these things is interesting. I've had a few endoscopies and although I didn't fall asleep I felt like the whole thing was a dream and afterwards I could very vaguely remember watching the TV screen with the internal camera inside me. I tried without sedation but having a thick tube put down your throat is really fucking unpleasant and the gag reflex makes it really painful but under sedation it was fine. It didn't hurt but it tickled inside, a really weird feeling.

Just be glad you don't have to have a camera shoved into your bell-end with no sedation. That was all sorts of fucked up and I hope I never have to have it done again as long as I live.

I rarely post on GAF, but I thought I'd weight in on this.
Having undergone a colonoscopy three times now, I do believe I have some experience with the matter. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis btw.

As others have already posted the preparation for the procedure is worse or at least it was for me. Suffering also from inflamed esophagus the preparation has given me stomach pains and your poop will turn into liquid hot magma by the end of it.
My recommendation is to get soft toilet paper as your rear exit will get wiped a lot. For me that was the worst part of the prep and overall. After that the actual procedure won't be that bad at all

Since you will be sedated for the actual procedure it REALLY won't be that bad although I don't know, since I haven't been sedated for that part... unfortunately. I can say that it was less painful than the prep anyway but I must admit that without sedation though it really isn't fun to have a tube stuffed in your rear end. It seemed to take forever and also the tube seemed to just go on and on getting to places inside me that I thought was not possible.
In reality though it was probably about 20 minutes and not that long of tube.

Basically what he said.

I wrote this not to scare you or anything, but to give you a small account of my experience.
All in all, while this won't be fun by any standard. It's also not something to freak out over.

I hope the best for you and that everything goes smoothly and you find out what ails you.
Also, I like your pics in the screenshot thread(s)

so what is the treatment like for ulcerative colitis? just wondering what my brother in law can expect from now on. can you control it to a good enough degree where you can function like you used to before you had it?

I've had a few (crohn's disease), it's not bad at all. You get drugged up, take a nap and then wake up. The bad part is the nasty shit they make you drink so you crap your brains out.

The prep is....not fun, but the procedure is painless, quick, and truly outpatient.

The prep made my asshole burn in a way that I hope to never experience again.

The regular treatment is currently: using a hammer on the immune system.
And when the hammer doesn't work anymore, just use a bigger hammer.

Which for me - after all of my experience - is not the right treatment, the immune system is just doing its job. The actual cause of the UC inflammations is bacteria being in a place, where they shouldn't be. Normally bacteria are stopped by the colon mucosa. For UC patients, part of the mucosa is defective and lets bacteria in for a few millimeters. Which then cause the inflammations. It's actually quite simple, but instead of figuring it out properly, doctors just assumed that the immune system had gone mad and "just" attacks the colon. Which is factually incorrect. Some years ago it was also "common knowledge" that UC was caused by psyche, which is also incorrect.

The current approach is like exclusively using steroids to treat blood poisoning.

Your brother in law may be lucky and just be a light case.

Help me, GAF... I need courage :(

The worst part is the 2-4l of awful liquid, that you will need to drink. The first liter is fine, but then it gets ugly.
And I was only knocked out completely once (which was my last colonoscopy). For the others, I was only semi-knocked out - I was still conscious. The actual procedure is fine, OP.

so what is the treatment like for ulcerative colitis? just wondering what my brother in law can expect from now on. can you control it to a good enough degree where you can function like you used to before you had it?

I've had varying degrees of treatment depending where the infection(?) is.
If it is at the very end of the colon then local treatment is recommended, if I remember correctly. Some foamy substance squirted up the butt if you will as well as suppositories.
For me, that didn't help and I moved on to pills and the suppositories with an occasional cortisone pill treatment when symptoms worsen. I also once had a cortisone treatment locally but that wasn't very effective.

As for the symptoms I've had wet poop (not runny poop itself though, just accompanied by liquid) and the unforgiving need to quickly poop when the need arises (no matter where I am). A doctor told me that is because the infection(?) is irritated by the fecal matter so it wants it out of there as quickly as possible.
For the past year I've found some help with protein milk drinks which have lessened the symptoms somewhat.

As for the degree of control, I've had to make sacrifices in some areas. Traveling is difficult for me as I can't control but only influence my system. I've gotten somewhat used to it and can predict it most of the time. I've always had a nervous stomach so now I've had a vicious cycle for some time. I poop when I'm nervous and I'm nervous about when I poop.

Of course if your brother-in-laws symptoms are different, then I suppose he doesn't have to worry about that.

I got diagnosed with ulcerative colitis about a year and a half ago, and have had two cameras up my pooper. Dude, don't at all worry.

I can see why you'd get worked up (I was freaking out before my first one), but it's a walk in the park, nothing to the prep or procedure.
Take a laxative before, be in a state of slight discomfort for 10 minutes during.
No drugs, no nothing, you'll be just fine chuck.

I was watching the TV everytime I've had one. You don't get to see your innards every day. Well save when my UC was the worst it's ever been. Then I was just in pain.

But normally it's no big deal. And the prep is by far the worst of it. I'd rather have a camera there than in other orifices.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I feel much better about it! Just gonna sit with my Vita and some iTunes and just let it all out :P

The procedure doesn't sound so bad.

The worst part of the colonoscopy is the prep. The actual procedure is a piece of piss. You go in, they put an IV in your arm, you wake up. That's it. You won't remember anything and there's no soreness (that I noticed).

I had mine -- and a sevenfold polypectomy -- and woke up feeling groggy and starved, but otherwise unaffected.

But that prep. I had no idea I could shoot jets of liquid out of my ass. Like a spray hose. Like a rocket.

My mother in law went through this, and I'll echo the sentiment that it's the build up that's the worst. Drinking a lake of whatever it is, shitting your brains out and not being able to really eat is, well, shitty.

Being tired and hungry with a worn out asshole cannot be fun.

Bumping to say im starting my prep. Love you GAF!

Really late too :(

Prep doesnt taste as bad as I thought. However I did use a straw.

The taste is not the problem ;)

You're in for an interesting 24 hours - take it easy!!

Btw, last time I had a colonoscopy my doctor decided to pump me full of drugs because I was in a lot of pain. They gave me some artificial drug equivalent to Opium and suffice it to say I now "understand" the movie Yellow Submarine :D

Thankfully Im not in any pain... Not yet at least.
Mostly, im very tired, and weak.

colonoscopy isn't shit

I have Crohn's and I've been through numerous colonoscopies, there's nothing to worry about

They used to make you drink something that tasted like chalk and ass mixed together. last time I went for one it was something different though and didn't taste bad.

You should be worried about these:

You poor guy. The prep is easily the worst part. I hope you have a Vita/3DS and a lot of unplayed games.

You're lucky, they've got stuff that doesn't taste too bad these days. A few years ago it was like chugging chalk.

They gave me something called "GO-LYTELY". Its not too bad so far. Things are already cranking, and thankfully it hasnt been painful *KNOCK KNOCK*

I had one done in November. I was never put to sleep or given any drugs. Camera right up the poop shoot. Most uncomfortable I've ever been.
No drink for me, they made me take two enimas instead.

I doubt you'll feel anything, if you've ever had really water-y shits it's like that only multiple times a minute.

This is exactly what happened when i had an op in jun. Dont worry too much about it OP
