For many, photographs from the World War II have only been seen in grainy black and white.

But now, new colour images have emerged that show the full horror of the destruction inflicted by Nazi bombings across London.

The powerful images were released to mark the 70th anniversary of the launch of Winston Churchill's 'V for Victory' campaign on July 19, 1941.

Is it possible to get the image in high rez. I want it for my background.
That's as high as I could get on the site. I only linked some of them, there were a couple more there too.

Edit: I'll add the rest to the OP too.

Edit2: 964x716 is as large as I can find it with a quick GIS.

It's funny that just a little color can make it seem so much more recent than it really was.

It was just 70 years ago. It's not like it was hundreds of years ago.

It really is amazing to look at a lot of photos from WWII, and see just how much destruction there was on many areas during that war.

Pictures are amazing as hell in color. The yellowness of the first picture with all the destroyed buildings make it look like a near post-apocalyptic city.

You would think that if something like that would occur in a major city that the spirits of the citizens would break. The older generations really went through some of the most shockingly tough times possible.

Looks like a painting.

If only we had colour footage of the war, or maybe even a live stream.

There's a ton of color footage of WWII, in large part due to the US government's great interest in documenting the war in color whenever possible.

Much of the best footage can be seen in WWII In Color, which is also available on Netflix instant.

Near my house is a marker stone where a V2 hit, it amazes me how many sturdy victorian homes it wiped out.

:lol Churchill was such a G. I've listened the "we'll fight them on the beaches" clip before football games. I don't see how you could not get pumped/inspired with that Churchill. How he invokes France as allies really hits home as a history major, considering the two countries have been rivals/enemies for centuries.

These pics just exemplify what he was talking about and the might of British resolve. And this is coming from an American. If there was ever a war which defined Good V. Evil, it was WW2.

Was buckingham palace ever hit by the bombs?

Yes, it was even suggested that the pilot was a relative, on the German side, and that's how he knew where to go.

The fact that the king and queen (the same ones from The King's Speech) stayed there through it all was seen as a great moral boost.

Also, I believe a lot of WWII footage was actually shot in colour but only developed in black and white, due to the high costs, so there's a lot more about of it than you'd think.

Awesome pictures, thanks for posting.
