So I've been watching Great Teacher Onizuka (Anime) for the past week, and I was wondering if there are any other comedy Japanese shows out there that you guys recommend.

It's great for taking a break from doing engineering problem sets and working out.

This is not limited to anime, which I usually don't enjoy watching. It can be J-drama or something else.

There was this one Anime show I saw a while back as a preview online somewhere, it was called Ghost Tales or Stories or something; but the dub was pretty hilarious. Just think of giving some talented comics a bland little anime to dub over and go to town on it. The VA's were definitely having fun. :lol

Don't know if that's what you mean though.

EDIT: It's Ghost Stories. http://youtube.com/watch?v=qJCidKnoMhU

Funny shit.

Um... not quite. To be honest, it's boring.

I find Mechaike amusing.

I'll check this out later.

On the J-Drama front two shows come to mind: Densha Otoko, the heartwarming tale of a total geek who falls in love with a beautiful woman and woos her with the help of an online forum and Gokusen, the heartwarming tale of mafia princess who just wants to teach high school in peace and the lovable thugs in her class. These are both a lot of fun, with caveats regarding the structural importance of cheese in the average J-Drama. Avoid the second Gokusen series at all costs; the gag gets a bit tired by the end of the original show and is well and truly dead by the time they try to milk it for another season.

Try the Do not Laugh Batsu Series.

This guy seems to have a lot of them subtitled:

I would recommend starting the Spring Inn series and going from there.
The most recent one(Hospital setting) they have done is also on Youtube but it's raw.

Premise of the show: 3 or 4 comedians go to a location for a day. They usually take part in the location that they are in, so if it's at the hospital, they become nurses. The show then tries to make them laugh in any way they can, and if any of them laugh, they get punished. They can make them laugh by quick jokes or they can try to break them down by doing repetitive things until they can't stand it.

For example, in section 4 of the Spring Inn series, someone dressed like 3cpo keeps opening the window for no reason over and over, infuriating and making one of the people laugh every time. Here is the clip:

The humor is all over the place. Sometimes you get duds but for the most part it's really funny.

On the J-Drama side you've got:

Densha Otoko
Hana Kimi
Ikebukuro West Gate Park
My Boss My Hero
Hana Yori Dango
Nobuta Wo Produce
Nodame Cantable
Gokusen

And if you get tired of this lot I'm sure you'll find a ton more through relation. An actor/actress you like or whatever. There are quite a few more I'd recommend.

Anime:

School Rumble
School Rumbe Nigakki

Yuh I really like School Rumble so I'm not gunna fill the list up with anything else. =P

Random TV shows, that depends entirely on what you like. Personally I find Utaban really funny. :-/

Have fun.

that show is great, also 99 it has some of the same people in it.

smap is actually pretty funny sometimes.
I don't get the chance to really catch SMAP X SMAP, but Nakai is pretty funny on Utaban, along with Ishibashi.

There's not much subbed material out for Mechaike, and all the ones I've found so far are all Morning Musume related. You can find them over at dj-waffles.com I believe, if you're going to watch the ones there do it in chronological order (Field Trip Special, Bakajo Special, Bakajo Extra Footage, Okajo Special, Okajo Extra Footage).

Plenty of unsubbed stuff scattered randomly on the net of course.

Personally my variety favorites are...

Mechaike
Pussuma
Guruguru 99
Hexagon II

Though I doubt much of this is subtitled...

If it isn't, I don't mind. It'll be a great way for me to improve my Japanese listening comprehension skills. Taking second year here.

Thanks for all your suggestions everyone. If you have more, please add.

True. One great thing I love about variety shows is that they basically write out what they say, so you can do some sort of a pattern matching so to say. I might upload a few videos then.

if you speak japanese watch sora mimi hour, it is hosted by tamori. god it's hilarious. sometimes that megadeth guitarist is on it. there are clips on youtube i believe.

Well I'm half way through Japanese 2 (second year), so I'm still learning grammar at this stage.

I'm watching shows, so I can improve my listening and understanding of the Japanese language.

Thanks for your suggestions so far.

Wow no one mentioned Kekkon Dekinai Otoko.

One of the Funniest JDorama's ever.
This. It's funny without being overly cheesy like most other dramas. Tiger and Dragon is also great.

My Boss My Hero and Nodame Cantible are both quite good too, but the comedy is much more over the top.

I second the Gaki no Tsukai No Laughing Batsu Series. They are all hilarious. You can download them in higher quality from D-Addicts, but there are no subs. Most of the jokes you should be able to understand in any case.
