Comfy Couch gaming...no picture. O.o

Hey guys,

got a 6850 and a Sony LCD. Connected the PC via HDMI to my TV but nothing happens, no picture. Is there any setting I need to check first? PC works fine via VGA on my moitor.

1) Check if you selected the proper HDMI port on your TV.
2) On your PC, go to display settings and select TV; make it primary display.
3) Restart your PC.
4) If you want sound via HDMI, you gotta configure that on your PC as well.

If it doesn't work, then try a different HDMI cable.

right click on the volume icon(the one right under next to the time and date) and click on playback devices and select AMD HDMI output(seeing you have a 6850).

HDMI.
Connect it to your video card and to the TV.

My PC is connected to a 32" Bravia via HDMI.

Got both video and audio fine.

Thanks guys, I now got picture, but two problems:

1. when both displays are connected my TFT monitor starts flickering (like not enough HZ)
2. I have my desktop on the sony tv (resolution is supposedly 1080p) but the picture got black bars around it...

Not sure about the first.

For the second, change your TV's aspect ratio setting to fullscreen.

Iirc if the TV is not 1:1, the edges may not line up correctly. On my DLP it goes offscreen to the right (overscan?) and I need to use video card drivers to align screen correctly.

1. No idea
2. AMD naturally underscans the image just in case for projectors. So you need to change that in the Catalyst Control Centre. So open CCC go to "My digital flat panels" -> scaling options and move the scaler to the right.

My TV is set to 1:1 pixel. o.O

The flickering goes as soon as I unplug the HDMI cable.

I've always had a small border around my image (which never really bothered me) so I'll try this!

If it comes back for certain games. It's because it the output frequency has changed(Crysis drove me insane). It seems scalings settings are saved according to the refresh rate. If you just put the scaling slider at the right place for 50Hz and 60Hz you should be fine.

Can you change the resolutions separately? Are they the exact same aspect ratio? You should be able to change them to be separate resolutions if they're not the same aspect since it tries to force the same aspect ratio across both initially.

OK, so my TV is fine now. Despite the fonts which look...I don't know, can't describe it. It's almost "too sharp". It doesn't look too natual but maybe that's just me.

However the problem with the flickering is still there on my main display when the display is connected next to the HDMI slot via D-Sub. You can see it in black and grey area esepcially, not so much with full brightness.

By main display you mean the TV right? Have you tried disconnecting the other and just hooking it up to the TV to make sure it's not the cable?

I assume you are using a DVI-VGA adapter since the 6850 doesn't have any d-sub ports? Have you checked to make sure it's tightly secured to both the graphics card and the VGA cord? Have you tried just using a DVI cable instead (one often comes with monitors)?

I'm using some sort of adapter, I'm not sure if it's to DVI though. WIndows says "D-Sub" in the driver options, so I thought it's that. But it#s definitly a VGA cable with an adapter.

I don't have a DVI cable to try that. As soon as I unplug the HDMI cable the flickering is gone. Is the 6850 defect?

If you're using this on an HDTV you should probably set the picture mode to "Just Scan" (or something equivalent --- it's called "Just Scan" on my LG TV). This will help account for the overscan that is inherently built into all HDTVs

The effect with the fonts is something I've noticed when connecting TVs to PC via HDMI. It's weird, but I think it may have to do with post-processing on the TV's side.

Is there some way that you can set a label on the input that your PC is running through to actually name it "PC"

On the two HDTVs I've used as monitors this has setup the fonts/display/etc. to resemble that of a PC monitor.

If your TV has a "sharpness" setting put it to zero or whatever is the lowest setting.

yep, you will need to turn down the sharpness on the TV for one...and second go into the settings and switch to..

your choice on Limited or full.

Thanks guys, but the screen flickering on my TFT is the real problem here when both HDMI-cable and VGA-D-Sub are connected. no explanation for that?

Oh, and in Crysis 2 I still have small black bars around the picture? O.o And I need to find a way to play those games more comfortably...it's sucks with mouse and Keyboard on the ocuch.

Ah yes, a friend of mine is using a recent Sony LCD as well and the TV is always applying some image processing that does effect the image quality (it is most noticeable with fonts).

There was no specific "PC mode" on this display, however, so image quality was always an issue. Many TVs allow for proper PC mode with minimal to no processing, which results in an image as clean as an actual monitor.

Hm, yeah. But it's not bad or so, it's ok, just not like a monitor. I'm only planning to use this for media, so that's a non issue anyway, I guess. It's fine with movies and games.

But please, could someone help me with those two problems I mentioned above? I tried two different HDMI and VGA cables and both result in a flickering TFT image when both screens are active.

You can change the aliasing of your fonts through the control panel (Windows 7). I think it's under display. There's a step through wizard. I had to do this with my 27" Samsung.

Yeah, but it's kinda hard to do it. I almost see no difference between the various fonts.

So, ehre comes the next problem (sigh, who said comfy couch gaming was like plug and play? It really isn't):

In Crysis 2 I can't see the logo while calibrating the brightness. That's weird, beccause I saw it BEFORE in Crysis 2 ON my TV. I know it worked. Now it's gone. RGB is set to limited because I know my TV doesn't support Full. Everything looks right in the windows 7 color calibrating process. Gamma is fine there. But in Crysis 2 it doesn't work. Why?

Also, is tehre a way to make the Desktop bigger without it affecting games as well?

That's a bug in Crysis 2... o.O It works in window mode but not in fullscreen. It works with YCBR though. O.o PC gaming really needs some improvment in the pulg & play department. -.- I spent way more time configuring than playing.

So which YCBR do I choose? 4:4:4 or 4:2:2?

EDIT:

Wow, comfy-couch GAF is really silent now. o.O What's the best solution to have keyboard/mouse on the couch? Is there a preferred wired/wirless solution? It would be pretty anoying with cables though my PC is probably to far away for wireless from my couch...

Is it normal that in PC-games framerate is all over the place? Is V-Sync really that heavy on the framerate? For example in the Bulletstorm demo there is a scene where you use that big machine gun, with v-sync it goes down to 30, without v-sync it stays at 60. o.O Also FPS are fluctuating a lot, sometimes it seems like it makes no sense. For example in Mafia II when I'm outside and driving around it's at 60 and in a gunfight it goes down to 30...despite that it doesn't seem like there is more to look at. It's really weird.
