It's the Sopranos on an Indian reserve and it's fucking hardcore and awesome. Tons of sex, violence, and even some great history.

I started reading the first issue randomly and now, two days later, I'm on issue 33 and fucking can't stop.

Sounds like comic creators need to start taking notes and writing better first volumes. I know you don't want to start the show with a showstopper but I can't tell you how many times I've tried to recommend a comic to somebody only to have to quantify it with a "The first trade isn't as strong, you should read to x."

I thought the first 100 Bullets trade was pretty solid. Sold me on the series, unlike others (e.g. Walking Dead.)

Im with Birdie, I prefer self contained stories. Obviously, if people want to start a long series such as 100 Bullets then that's where the thread should go. I just think that complete one volume stories will serve the purpose of this thread better. That being said I Kill Giants is awesome and is my vote.

I think a lot of times the writers just haven't found the right tone or voice for the book yet in volume 1. Alan Moore is one of the few who are really good at nailing the tone and voice of their characters right from issue one.

Speaking of which, I hope we get a chance to get to some of Moore's ABC stuff like Top 10. Are those books still in print?

I'd also rather sub Ex Machina in place of 100 Bullets.

Both of those ended up being super disappointing for me. Ex Machina devolved into wtfisthisshitpicard.jpg and 100 Bullets felt pretty circular and pointless in the end (despite being a compelling read up until the last 5 or so issues).

I haven't read I Kill Giants and it sounds good so I'll vote for that.

I would like to see us going in directions like Bone, Strangers in Paradise, Will Eisner's graphic novels, Blankets, stuff like that. That would be particularly good because I kind of lost touch with this kind of scene and would love to get back to these kinds of books with you guys.

Why...did you buy all of that? I'd understand if you had a few piles of TPB's of seminal comics that you haven't gotten around to, but you seem to have bought piles of random junk and WWF and Xena comics instead. I'm confused.

It is the first time I've read a comic that was grounded in the real world (unless you count Kabuki/Scarab), which I wasn't expecting to like, but it grew on me heavily.

The art takes come getting used to, but you learn to appreciate the detail the artist puts in the backgrounds - meth houses with needles and fast food lying around, stains on the mattresses; beautiful shots of the South Dakota badlands which flow into shots of old trailer houses ruining the sunset. He's a genius.

Plus, his constantly naked, tattooed Native young women are incredibly hot. I was torn between wanting to fuck Carol and wanting to lock her up with Typhoid Mary as I think her STDs must be airborne by now. haha

The problem is that superheroes occupy such a huge space that "all comics" ends up meaning "mostly superheroes".

Most of these stories are only snooty because the way the industry is; in any other medium, a lot of them would be regular stuff.

Comics is the only place where you are arrogant just by not wearing your underwear over your pants.

I don't think we should entirely exclude super hero comics as there are some really great ones out there, but certainly we should be looking at fantastic stuff like Bones, Blankets and a million other great stories out there.

I totally agree with you dude. This is why I don't go in the regular comics thread anymore. ALL they talk about is superhero comics. Which I do like and read, but everytime I've tried bringing up other comics in there my comments get swept up in a whirlwind of superhero talk.

I much prefer non hero comics these days anyway.

We'll be fine if we stick to the one-shot superhero comics, such as Year One, Dark Knight Returns, and The Long Halloween.

I think some Vol. 1s lend themselves to the Club concept. A book like American Vampire is great for self-contained stories since the arcs are confined to different periods of history.

It's actually not a bad idea to pick volumes made up of stand alone issues. Every series has them.

I don't think every thread is about them. If more people went in there and carried on the torches that people like me light every week, there'd be a more even discussion.

I think part of the problem is that people who don't read superhero comics also don't support weekly comic buying, which is weird to me. I pick up AT LEAST one amazing, non-superhero book every week.

Most of the discussion centers around weekly reading, so if that's all made up of people who read superhero books, that's going to monopolize the conversation.

But just because you don't care about superhero comics, doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't support your local comic book store every week. There's incredible stuff put out every week, and I'd love to see more conversation about it.

The reason for this is that superheroes are just grist for the mill of conversation. There simply aren't as many non-cape books out there, so those of us that talk comics will usually be talking superhero (read: action) books. But, if you read between the lines you will notice that we usually only rave about the REALLY good ones. Like Uncanny X-Force, that comic is as good as anything ever, it's sublime. It would be a shame to miss it because of a lil bit of spandex in it.

But really, most comics are shitty just like most readers are dumb. I tend to think of the bulk of comics as saturday morning cartoons - light fluff.

All of which is to say, I don't really see us talking about shitty cape books in here - chances are if we choose it, it'll be cos it's amazing.
