Recommend putting in Locke and Key from IDW while it's currently on sale via Comixology. AMAZING series. Just read it over the weekend. The final part of the series begins in Oct.

I thought the first 100 Bullets trade was pretty solid. Sold me on the series, unlike others (e.g. Walking Dead.)Sounds like comic creators need to start taking notes and writing better first volumes. I know you don't want to start the show with a showstopper but I can't tell you how many times I've tried to recommend a comic to somebody only to have to quantify it with a "The first trade isn't as strong, you should read to x."

I think a lot of times the writers just haven't found the right tone or voice for the book yet in volume 1. Alan Moore is one of the few who are really good at nailing the tone and voice of their characters right from issue one.
Speaking of which, I hope we get a chance to get to some of Moore's ABC stuff like Top 10. Are those books still in print?
is I Kill Giants a series or just a single graphic novel?
This fucking thread needs Scalped:

It's the Sopranos on an Indian reserve and it's fucking hardcore and awesome. Tons of sex, violence, and even some great history.
I started reading the first issue randomly and now, two days later, I'm on issue 33 and fucking can't stop.
Both of those ended up being super disappointing for me. Ex Machina devolved into wtfisthisshitpicard.jpg and 100 Bullets felt pretty circular and pointless in the end (despite being a compelling read up until the last 5 or so issues).I'd also rather sub Ex Machina in place of 100 Bullets.
I haven't read that, but I HAVE read The 49ers which is a standalone prequel to Top 10, I think.
It was pretty fantastic, actually![]()
I haven't read it, but I've just bought it on Comixology, ready to get stuck into.I'm thinking I Kill Giants as well. It's not nearly as dense as V, so might make a more gentle start to the proceedings. Happy to get stuck in too, I loved that book! Have you read it before, Mike?
My only general suggestion is for us to stay away from superheroes because, as much as I love them, we can get into that genre basically any month on the regular thread.
I would like to see us going in directions like Bone, Strangers in Paradise, Will Eisner's graphic novels, Blankets, stuff like that. That would be particularly good because I kind of lost touch with this kind of scene and would love to get back to these kinds of books with you guys.
These are the comics i own:

I haven't even read 10% of them. Maybe GAF can pick something from this list and see what's worth reading and i can join in.
Why...did you buy all of that? I'd understand if you had a few piles of TPB's of seminal comics that you haven't gotten around to, but you seem to have bought piles of random junk and WWF and Xena comics instead. I'm confused. These are the comics i own:

I am from Australia and I import my books from Amazon.
It usually takes 3 or 4 weeks to get here so I am afraid you guys will move on to the next book once I received it.

Two solutions - digital comics / move country
Easy!

That's insane. Just... read them, or give them away or something.
People on the internet are weird.
What. Seriously Bleepey, that's just fucked up. I have maybe 3 or 4 comics that I've bought and haven't got around to reading yet. Why on earth do you keep buying them if you don't read them???
I completely agree. I think you should give some to me. I'll look after them and read them and love them I promise.
It's just a single graphic novel.
That looks awesome - will have to give it a try at some point, thanks!

I suggest we have separate comic book clubs, one for all comics and one just for snooty alt comics.
I don't think we should entirely exclude super hero comics as there are some really great ones out there, but certainly we should be looking at fantastic stuff like Bones, Blankets and a million other great stories out there.
The problem is that superheroes occupy such a huge space that "all comics" ends up meaning "mostly superheroes".
Most of these stories are only snooty because the way the industry is; in any other medium, a lot of them would be regular stuff.
Comics is the only place where you are arrogant just by not wearing your underwear over your pants.
It's true and my intention is not to say we should forbid superheroes stories from be up for voting, just to realize how much space it occupies and if there isn't a conscious move away from them, to at least present one option up for voting that does not involve superheroes, then we'll be missing out on all the rest.
If I'm overreacting, then fine, but I fear this risk is very real.

I'm just one guy and who cares, but I'm out if this turns into a "should we read the blue spandex dudes or the red spandex dudes?" thread. There's enough of that all over the entire internet. I want to talk about the unique, interesting stuff. It's true and my intention is not to say we should forbid superheroes stories from be up for voting, just to realize how much space it occupies and if there isn't a conscious move away from them, to at least present one option up for voting that does not involve superheroes, then we'll be missing out on all the rest.

ALL they talk about is superhero comics.

I think some Vol. 1s lend themselves to the Club concept. A book like American Vampire is great for self-contained stories since the arcs are confined to different periods of history.
There's also no need for every comics thread to be about them.Like, oh, Vimanarama? Frankencastle? Uncanny X-Force? All Star Superman?
No need to paint all superhero comics with the same reductive brush.

But I will admit that the first two look rad and I might check them out. The latter two, not so much.
I totally agree with you dude. This is why I don't go in the regular comics thread anymore. ALL they talk about is superhero comics. Which I do like and read, but everytime I've tried bringing up other comics in there my comments get swept up in a whirlwind of superhero talk.
I much prefer non hero comics these days anyway.
That's weird, someone must have stolen all my Scalped posts in literally every monthly Comics thread and buried them in the desert.
Why would someone do that??
SO MAD.
