Rodriguez explained to David that he’s not trying to get Marvel to make new Romani characters. He wants Marvel to bring in Romani experts– and it does not need to Roma Pop– to educate his staff about the Romani people. He wants there to be company guidelines on how the Romani are portrayed so as not to perpetuate more stereotypes. Rodriguez’s request was not about ending a conversation, it was about beginning one.

I really don't see this happening.

As far as Romani go, the three most visible Romani in Marvel are highly nuanced characters that may have appeared originally as villains, but are much more than that now.

The problems with all three Romani characters are that they started out as villains. Two of the characters are associated with sorcery (Doctor Doom's comes from his mother's Romani side while Scarlet Witches actually comes from her mutanpowerst I have no fucking clue anymore. Quicksilver is kind of an asshole.

I don't know how you would change Doctor Doom and Scarlet Witch to remove "stereotypes" without removing "magic" from their repertoire. Besides magic being a known ability that many people of different backgrounds use in Marvel.

Ah she must pop in again much later. Looking at the TPB of Dixon's run, she's only on the second volume and only for a couple issues.

I was watching Linkara's review of her Titans run which seems really good and I hope it gets collected in TPB at some point since DC seems to be doing that with that era of comics recently.

I really take issue with the fact that he points to Quicksilver over and over as proof that he is doing his part to improve perception of Romani. The way he references it in his first "apology," in particular, suggests to me that he believes the way he characterized and improved the character go against type, and that he is deserving of recognition for that. In fact it almost reads like he thinks he is doing more for Romani people than the Bucharest Romani are doing for themselves. Him bringing his work on the character up again in his second post rubbed me the wrong way.

I'm still satisfied with that second post. At least he's examining and considering his biases critically. But he has a ways to go.
