Alright guys so I was planning on jumping in to the world of comics with Batman and Detective Comics #1 coming out, but now I'm seeing that Batman isn't getting a complete revamp. Will I be completely lost? I know a ton about the character but have only read a few graphic novels like The Long Halloween, TDKR etc.

I would read Batman: Year One to get the origin story. I wouldn't read the Death/Resurrection of Bruce Wayne stuff unless you love crossovers/confusing time travel stuff. Honestly most of the stuff going on right now won't matter because Batman #1 will be the first time in awhile that Bruce has been wearing the cowl in Gotham. All of the recent stuff has been Dick Grayson filling in while Bruce has been dead/recovering/recruiting Batman, Inc.

DC has said it wants all #1s to be accessible. I am willing to bet you will be perfectly fine reading Detective #1.

Dude my mum knows the Batman origin. Read Year One becuase it's good, not because it 'matters'.

Jump in with the #1s, you will not be lost.

Yo comic GAF.

Comic noob here. I've decided to start reading comics thanks to Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I'm gonna start with Spiderman, and I'd like to read everything from start to finish.

Now when I say "everything"... well, I don't really know what I'm saying. I know "The Amazing Spiderman" is the main Spidey comic. But Spiderman started in Amazing Fantasy #15. And I know there are crossovers and spin off comics that are part of the canon of the story, like "Secret Wars", "Maximum Carnage" and "Civil War".

So I guess my question is, "Is there a list of what comics I should read, in order, to get the entire Spiderman story?"

I'm going to a huge convention this month where I should be able to find every comic ever (Fan Expo in Toronto!)... what should I start with? This omnibus looks pretty awesome, but I'm almost certain that it's only "Amazing Spiderman" and doesn't include any crossovers/spinoffs:

omni_asm01_reg_b.jpg

Would I be missing out on any content if I were to pick this up?

Thanks in advance.

Just want to throw in my two penneth...

If you really want to read Spider-Man from the beginning I think you might actually be insane. As Htown said on the last page, there are literally thousands of comics published that you would need to read, the vast majority of which will be really really bad, especially when read with modern eyes. I think the Stan Lee stuff is lovely and quaint from a historical perspective but if you want to read good stories they are not the best place to start.

Honestly, if you want to read a Spider-man story from the beginning, read Ultimate Spider-Man. It's still a massive undertaking that will set you back hundreds of dollars but the art and story will be great, the crossovers are kept to a minimum and you get the entire shebang easily. Then, when you're an experienced comic reader go back and read some of the old stuff for fun.

No big characters should be read like their entire publishing history is 'canon', you'll go mad trying to read all that stuff. IMO, pick up critically acclaimed stuff and work you way backwards. That way you still get to read the good stories but you won't be put off right at the start by decades of shitty 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s comics...

That's true. I guess my attention span fizzled out towards the end of his post and went on to the next one where Morrison's stuff was suggested. I was thinking if he needed some back story on the Bat-comics he should read Year One since Snyder said that it is the foundation for DCnU Batman.

I'd recommend that if you're going with Batman #1, you'd fall in love with Snyder's Detective 871-880, a self-contained run that should lead into his first issue of Batman. One of the best comics runs period of this year. I believe the trade should be out Nov 29th - http://www.amazon.com/dp/140123206X/?tag=neogaf0e-20

$19 for the whole run in hardcover is a steal!

Other than that, like others have said they are shooting for each of the new 52 issues to be great for new readers.

Did you guys hear about this? Apparently CBR was doing a feature on "MIA comics," checking up on projects that are long overdue for a variety of reasons, and supposedly a DC rep told them that the last two issues of Batman Incorporated are being canceled rather than getting jammed into August. Instead, Batman Inc. #8 will be the last issue of the series and the remaining two issues are being folded into a one-shot for future release as a gap-filler before the 2012 launch of Morrison's "Batman: Leviathan" finale.

Wait what? Everyone has known for a while that this month is the last Inc.

No, I was under the impression that they'd be going up to #10 in this volume, that's what GM was saying at Comic-Con last month. Kinda sucks but I guess it makes sense with the relaunch. It would be odd to have one DCU title at #7 with everything else at #1. As long as it comes out and has Chris Burnham killing it some more I'll be happy. I have patience.

DC had solicited #s 8, 9, and 10 for release before September, with August's #10 as the last before the reboot. But Batman Inc issues kept getting delayed, and if you look at DC's site they're still listing #8 as shipping on August 24th -- the same ship date as #10, and two weeks after #9 which has a ship date of this Wednesday.

CBR contacted DC for some clarification and that's when they got the story of #9 and 10 being canceled in favor of a later one-shot.

Got it. Everything since #5 is sitting in backlog right now so I lost track. Gonna try and correct that tonight actually.

That's shitty. Batman Inc. has been the comic I've looked forward to most each "month". Such a good fun story being chopped up because of this relaunch. It's still the biggest reason I'm turned off of the DC #1s.

i just realized no one on comi-gaf ever really talks about Amazing Spiderman. I cant buy a weekly book, i would be forever backlogged.

Nope, I read ultimate for my spidey fix. Dipped in and out of 616 but it's far too patchy to be worth the time or money IMO. What is this spider island of which you speak?

Amazing has been so much better that the relaunched Ultimate though.

this

the ultimate universe...was the cream of the crop when it launched but now...its not really needed the normal marvel 616 universe is doing very well now , it was really boring and all over the place when the Ultimates launched now the ultimate universe is all over the place after Ultimatum.

Amazing Spider-man is biweekly not weekly.

Spider-Island is an event which writer Dan Slott has been building towards since his run began with Big Time and issue 648. Started off with issue 666.

The Jackal returns and he is working with some one to spread a bed bug infestation all over Manhattan which results in victims of the bed bug bites getting Spider powers. So Manhattan is overrun with people having Spider powers.

My guess as to who The Jackal is working with is
Queen
.

Thanks for the help everyone. I've read Year One as well and I'll take everything else you guys suggested into account. Hopefully the #1's will be accessible enough.

So, last year I got into Green Lantern and Flash trades as they were my favorite childhood characters... I'm still getting caught up with the Flash run (about to read Rouge War), but am caught up through Blackest Night for Green Lanter/GLC.

I'm really interested in the #1s, obviously getting the Flash, and 4 (!) green lantern books. I'd also like to get into the DCU so that I could read summer crossovers and generally have a better idea what is going on outside of the green lantern books. So.. JLA, Batman, Supes.. maybe Wonder Woman, JLI, Aquaman.. and I wouldn't mind reading the new Firestorm book since I want to see the fallout from Blackest Night for that one.

Is there a good way to get caught up to the reboot quickly? I know I need to get through Brightest Day and then Flashpoint.. What trades do I need to read other than the Green Lantern/GLC/Emerald Nights/Flash/Mainline Brightest Day trades?

Then I guess go to a store and try and get individual issus from the War of the Green Lanterns and Flashpoint?

Then with the #1's does anyone know what books I need to buy to stay up to date on Batman and Supes going forward? Do I need to get *all* of the related Batman books or can I just go with the Detective Comics and batman book? Same for supes.

I swear, they make it way too hard for someone to read trades and get caught up to current issues. I've been wanting to make the jump to pulling issues for 6 months but I always feel about a year (or more) behind.

its not as big a deal as some people make it out to be to "keep up" with comics. Me, i subscribe to latest books, and am buying "Secret Invasion" trades to sort of "catch up". Right now I am reading none of Flashpoint, but am reading some of "Blackest Night"

As for which number 1's? It seems like Detective and Batman might be switching roles as per the writers styles. If you want an action book go with Detective, and Batman will have the suspense. Every once in a while the writers fall behind and someone like David Hine will take over a 3-4 issue run and suddenly you have a psychotic thriller batman title. Flip a coin, I think they will both be good. I dont know about Superman. I will try Action, see if i like it.

Unwritten for me is a lot like Fables in the sense that I only want to read it in trades. I never want to read those books as individual issues.

So the two different books won't have a shared story that has to be kept up with jointly? They are actually seperate books and continuity won't get all jacked by reading just one?

Cover for Batgirl #3.

Issue 2 of JLA has Batman vs Supes on the cover. Issue 2 of Supergirl has Superman vs Supergirl. And now Issue #3 of Batgirl has Babs and Nightwing.

Spare me this nonsense!

Eh. DC has a habit of putting these sorts of images on the cover and not really incorporating it into the story.

Obviously Nightwing told Batgirl to get back in the wheelchair, and her reply was to kick him in the face because she is a STRONG and INDEPENDENT female character.

they are separate storylines. Sometimes mega-events have "continued in other title" but that is more a Marvel thing.

The massive time compression going on and making everyone really young now is the dumbest thing about the relaunch. It's just exceedingly silly.

Anth0ny said:
This will be a solid challenge. Even ignoring the reprints and non-canon stuff, this is gonna be crazy =D
That image is missing all of Spidey's other canon adventures with the likes of his Avengers teams (he's currently on two of them) and the FF as well as his numerous appearances in other comics. If you were to include all of those then I think the number is something like 4000 comics.
